First upset of the year happens as Tiger Tor Buamas is stopped in 5 by Alie Laurel. Tiger, previously 15-0 (12), was making the first defense of his WBO Oriental bantamweight title.

 

Rances Barthelemy stops Argenis Mendez to claim the IBF Super Featherweight in the second upset of the year and in controversial fashion. The 2 KO shots, in round 2, coming well after the bell first rang. First major controversial moment of the year and first world title fight of the year.

 

Jan 6

Tesshin Okada becomes the first boxing fatality of the year. The Japanese 21 year old died in hospital following injuries suffered on December 20th.

Masayoshi Nakatani defeats Yoshitaka Kato to announce himself on the Asian scene and win the OPBF title at 135lbs
