Re: UFC is going to kill boxing!

Flatlined?

Other than GSP (who announced his retirement tonight), Silva (who lost last time) and Rousey no one did over half a million. That's not flat-lining, that's completely failing to be a challenge to boxing....

...well they challenge boxing in terms of BS decisions...I guess

In 2008 they had 2 PPV's do over 1 million, 2009 they had 1 Million+ PPV, in 2010 that number climbed to 3, in 2011 there was 0, in 2012 there was 2. This year 0.

If 1 million is too high how about looking at just the +700,000, right?

I 2006 there was 2 (including 1 over 1 million), in 2007 that number that was just 1. In 2008 they bounced back well with 2 selling more than 700,000 (both went over 1 million and both featured Brock Lesnar), 2009 saw 3 going over 700k (the biggest selling was again Lesnar), in 2010 it was again Lesnar that lead the way with the biggest selling show of the year but 3 went over 1 million and 5 shows went over 700,000.

Huge drop off since '10 and now. It also appears they've not had a 1+ million seller since October 2010.

In 2013 Mayweather, himself, has done over 3million!

Re: UFC is going to kill boxing!

I have heard it from a few over the past month that the UFC craze has been dwindling although I never looked too much into it. But it has been around for 20 years so obviously it's not something that will be going away fully soon.

Re: UFC is going to kill boxing!

I never really got the whole UFC v Boxing thing but I will say this, dont write the UFC off based on those figures. In fact, based on those figures I would say the sport is in a really strong position. The UFC puts on a PPV every month. As such your gonna get people who will watch some months but not others. The fact that the UFC is able to consistently maintain a good viewership level is completely to its credit. If you dont think it is then look at the WWE (similar monthly PPV format) buyrates for 2013.

I hate to say it, and I am not really a fan of the UFC but am undoubtedly a massive Boxing fan, but if our sport put on a PPV once a month I cant see the networks pulling in relatively consistent figures like the UFC has.

I never understood the feud, but I always blamed Arum and the boxing guys for it, Dana White was perfectly willing to leave us alone when he first started up and in fact was a boxing fan himself. Meat makes a great point about the sheer volume of these, a 160 monthly similar boxing events would be hardpressed to do as well. One could say that we basically DO have monthly PPV's but they're put on by different entities and also not on a regular schedule like this.

--- Sweet figures, but I tell you boxing is already killing boxing through Golden Boy and Haymon propping up canned fights on a routine basis.

Say what you will about Arum who needs Donald Trump's 10,000 sq foot closet he built for his wife to hold all of Arum skeletons, he almost always puts on a legit slug-a-thon.

Boxing eventually will return to it's roots in a few years to survive, it has too.
