  2. Fury vs Usyk undercard revealed as Jai Opetaia and Joe Cordina feature By Alex Pattle, The Independent The undercard for Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk has been revealed, with two other title fights scheduled in Saudi Arabia. Fury and Usyk will clash in Riyadh on 18 May to crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, while Jai Opetaia and Mairis Briedis will provide chief support in a rematch two years in the making. Australian Opetaia, who outpointed Briedis in 2022, will face the Latvian for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title – which Opetaia won against Briedis and vacated late last year. Elsewhere, Welshman Joe Cordina defends his IBF belt against Northern Ireland’s Anthony Cacace at super-featherweight. A series of non-title bouts were also announced including two heavyweight clashes – Agit Kabayel vs Frank Sanchez and Moses Itauma vs Ilja Mezencev – and two cruiserweight fights – Sergey Kovalev vs Robin Sirwan Safar and David Nyika vs Michael Seitz. Finally, Mark Chamberlain and Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab will meet in a lightweight tilt, and Isaac Lowe faces Hasibullah Ahmadi at featherweight.

  4. BBC Former world champion Josh Taylor says boxing "will be a duller place" without Willie Limond, who has died aged 45. Ex-British and Commonwealth light-welterweight champion Limond won 42 of his 48 professional fights from 1999 to 2023 - and 13 by knockout - although only three bouts took place after 2016. Four of his losses were to fighters who won world titles - Amir Khan, Anthony Crolla, Erik Morales and Ricky Burns. "It's a terrible day for Scottish sport," Taylor told BBC Scotland. "The man in general was a larger-than-life character. He was always funny. He was one of life's good guys. "It's such a tragic, tragic loss. Scotland's lost one of its favourite sons, especially in boxing. It's a huge loss." Limond was originally a footballer, playing five times for Albion Rovers in the late 1990s. In his distinguished boxing career he held the British super-featherweight, light-welterweight and lightweight titles as well as the Commonwealth light-welterweight, WBU lightweight and IBO Inter-Continental lightweight crowns. In a post on social media, his son Jake said his "dad passed away in the early hours of the morning". "He fought on for near enough 10 days. Warrior," he added on Instagram. Limond fought countryman Burns in September, with the referee stopping the fight at the end of the eighth round because of excessive blood from his nose. He announced his retirement from the sport afterwards but was set to face Joe Laws at Emirates Arena in Glasgow on 3 May. Laws posted on Instagram: "I'm absolutely devastated. Willie just wanted to make a better life for his family. "Willie my old son, wait for me at the pearly gates - we can get it on. Legends never die." Limond was found in an unresponsive state in a car in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, on 6 April and was taken to Monklands Hospital, where he died. Police Scotland say there are no suspicious circumstances. One of Limond's most famous bouts was a Commonwealth lightweight title meeting in 2007 against Khan, when the Athens Olympics silver medallist was an unbeaten rising star. Limond gave Khan - who went into the fight with nine knockouts from his then 12 fights - the toughest test of his early professional career, knocking the 20-year-old down before losing by stoppage. He knocked Khan to the canvas in the sixth round but was denied what he felt was a knockout by a significant delay before the count began. The Bolton fighter then took control, with Limond forced to retire from the fight because of a broken jaw before the start of the ninth round. Limond won a WBU title and in 2010 took on four-weight world champion Morales in a title fight in Mexico, going down three times in the sixth. He lost to Crolla on points in his next British title fight at light-welterweight level before three successful Commonwealth title fights, the latter also securing him the British title with victory over Curtis Woodhouse in 2014. Former world champion Crolla posted a 'heartbroken' emoji on X and, along with a recent photo of himself and Limond, wrote: "Not just in boxing but in life as well. One of the best men I ever met." Woodhouse, who was beaten by Limond at Braehead Arena in 2014, also paid tribute to the fighter on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Absolutely devastated to hear the news of the passing of Willie Limond, a great fighter and a great man," the Englishman wrote. "We stayed in touch after our fight and always had a laugh together. Absolutely gutted. Rest in peace champ." St Andrew's Sporting Club - who were scheduled to stage Limond's fight with Laws - posted on social media: "Everyone at St Andrew's Sporting Club are shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond. "Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time."

  10. By Matt Breen, Philadelphia Inquirer Jaron “Boots” Ennis, Philadelphia’s only current boxing champion, will return to the ring following a nearly 12-month layoff this summer after signing Wednesday with one of the sport’s biggest power brokers. Ennis (31-0, 28 knockouts) signed a “multi-fight promotional deal” with Matchroom Boxing, the British-based outfit owned by Eddie Hearn that also promotes heavyweight Anthony Joshua. The 26-year-old from Mount Airy has not fought since last July. He won the IBF’s interim welterweight title in January 2023 and the interim label was removed in November after Terrence Crawford declined to make a mandatory title defense against Ennis. Ennis reached a settlement last month with his former promoter, which made the fighter a free agent. The move should help Ennis land bigger bouts as Matchroom has a TV contract with DAZN and regularly hosts signature events. It could get complicated as many of the premium fighters at 147 pounds are under contract with Premier Boxing Champions and managed by Al Haymon. “I’m excited for this partnership with Eddie Hearn, Matchroom and DAZN,” said Ennis. “I can’t wait to continue making my mark and become undisputed world champion. I’ve been out of the ring for a year, and I cannot wait to get back in and do what I do best: entertain the fans and put on clinics. There are blockbuster fights on the horizon for me, and I am ready to deliver them.” “I’ve watched this young man for many years, and I always believed he would become a pound-for-pound great, and I have no doubt he is already the greatest fighter in the division,” Hearn said. “To win the race to sign Jaron is a massive coup for Matchroom Boxing and DAZN. “Holding the IBF title in one of boxing’s glamour divisions places Jaron front and center for some of the biggest fights out there in the sport, and we plan to deliver them for him. Jaron has everything needed to become a household name both in the sport and in the sporting hotbed of his Philadelphia hometown, where we are committed to building him. Fight fans can get excited for his return in the summer as he looks to hunt down the biggest fights that will elevate him to the pound-for-pound list.”

  11. Anyone else watch this? Quite a fun watch I thought though Garcia not bothering to make weight took the shine off a little.

  12. Don't really know why Haney had such a big reputation. He lost to Loma (really a big featherweight). While Garcia's weight loss means this should have a * next to it so should his defeat to Davis. He should never have agreed to the 136 in limit when he'd clearly grown into light welter. It wasn't a big shock to see him succumb to a body shot.
    2 points
  13. Even had Haney somehow pulled it out at the end, it had to be embarrassing he was being troubled by a guy who, perception is, has a screw loose. Everything pointed to Haney here, and Garcia seemed ill-prepared. But like a mad scientist, it all came together when the lights came on. Garcia tried the same approach with Davis. Spurts of aggression to get his opponent on the back foot. But what Davis has - and Haney lacks - is finishing power. Haney banked a few rounds while Garcia was backing off, but Garcia kept coming and brought it when he needed it at the close. Haney's been the king of the UD12's. It was puzzling his boxing skills couldn't short circuit Garcia's aggression, but he seemed to play into Garcia's hands by messing with the bull. Perhaps the method to Garcia's pre-fight madness. He may have taken Haney off his game before the first bell even sounded. This result also reminds why we're so often denied fights like this. Haney had an image of invincibility - especially in this matchup - as an unbeaten fighter few opponents could barely touch. That reputation blew up in smoke in less than an hour. Although it's ultimately misguided, you can kinda see why managers/promoters don't want fights like this. Garcia's people didn't want the Davis fight. Crawford and Spence personally forced that fight. Promoters promote; that's what they do. The business model still says keep the asset marketable, i.e. unbeaten. Haney's now a damaged commodity. The flipside is this result also shows you can lose like Garcia did to Davis and still get it back. Are promoters getting the message? The ice may be thawing - Davis-Garcia, Inoue-Fulton, Crawford-Spence and here come Fury-Usyk and Beterbiev-Bivol. A chunk of the audience may be gone irretrievably due to mismanagement, but what's left may be salvageable and built back up. Taking the risk with your unbeaten fighter is essential and, in the event of a setback, not the end of the world. Yea missing weight was unprofessional - of course it was - but the difference in size and weight between the fighters wasn't unreasonable and Haney made an informed decision to enter the ring with eyes wide open. Davis made Garcia look like a little boy. Props to Garcia for bringing it in primetime at his second chance.

  25. Deontay Wilder will face Zhilei Zhang on 1 June after making shock move to Matchroom By Kal Sajad, BBC Sport American heavyweight Deontay Wilder has signed with Matchroom Boxing and will face Zhilei Zhang as part of the five-versus-five card against Queensberry Promotions on 1 June in Saudi Arabia. Wilder's link up with promoter Eddie Hearn came as a surprise as Matchroom and Queensberry unveiled their fighters in the most spectacular fashion at a news conference in London. The 10 fighters wore white masks before being unveiled one by one. Heavyweight Daniel Dubois - the first to be revealed - will face Filip Hrgovic in a world-title final eliminator in Riyadh and Liverpool featherweight Nick Ball will challenge WBA world champion Raymond Ford. A middleweight contest between unbeaten Londoner Hamzah Sheeraz and American Austin 'Ammo' Williams and an all-British cruiserweight bout between Willy Hutchinson and Craig Richards complete the line-up. Wilder was the last man to be unmasked. He bellowed his trademark 'Bomb Squad' as a grinning Hearn pumped his fist. "Nobody ever thought me and Eddie would be working together. This is the ultimate surprise," Wilder said. Hearn added: "For one night only, we work together." The Hearn and Wilder link-up is equally surprising, and demonstrates how any rift is fixable with Saudi influence. They have been at each other's throats for the best part of decade as Hearn backed Matchroom's Anthony Joshua in a potential fight which has not yet materialised Wilder - who has boxed primarily on Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Championship - was one of the most destructive power punchers in the division but has won just one bout since November 2019 and was outpointed by Joseph Parker in December. "We'll see if I've got it or not. This fight I'm holding it as my last dance, my last chance," an emotional Wilder, 38, said. "I lost my love and passion for this business. I lost my hunger for so many different reasons "I'm not playing around this time. I've got nothing to lose." Matchroom v Queensberry will form the undercard to the undisputed light-heavyweight contest between undefeated Russian Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, a blockbuster for the boxing purists. "It's the best fight in boxing," Hearn said as the two Russians took to the stage in London. After a traditional style news conference for Beterbiev-Bivol, the event soon turned into The Masked Singer meets WWE. Hearn and Warren talked up the undercard as the masked fighters waited patiently. Not everything went to plan, however, as the Matchroom boss prematurely mentioned the still masked Ball's name. The rivalry between Britain's two biggest promotional companies in the sport dates back to the 1980s, when Hearn's father Barry was at the helm for Matchroom. "Growing up as a kid I'd hear the name [Warren] on the phone. It wasn't always pleasant but I'd hear them arguing," Heard said. Hearn and Warren - who had reportedly never met until last year - were brought together by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's general entertainment authority. Alalshikh - with the riches of Saudi Arabia behind him but under the backdrop of sports washing accusations - convinced the two to bury the hatchet. "We're not friends really, I want to absolutely destroy Queensberry," Hearn added, tongue-in-cheek. With bragging rights at stake, one point will be awarded for a decision win and two points for a knockout or technical knockout, with captains' points worth double. Hearn selected Wilder to lead his team, with Queensberry's Sheeraz skippering for Warren. The only real needle between the two teams came in an exchange between Londoner Dubois and Croatian Hrgovic as they discussed sparring together. "I'm a different animal now," Dubois said. Hrgovic replied: "I hope he's changed otherwise he will last one round only. That sparring wasn't good for him." The winner could face Anthony Joshua for a vacant IBF title later in the year. Current IBF champion, Oleksandr Usyk, will face Tyson Fury for all four world titles in May. A two-fight deal is in place, meaning a sanctioning body is likely to force the winner to vacate.

  46. Known in the boxing annals primarily as the first guy to knock Roy Jones jr down, Lou Del Valle was a solid light heavyweight who also briefly held the WBA title he took by stopping the solid Eddy Smulders, in 1997. After losing to Jones jr on points, he would try to reinvent himself as a cruiserweight, after also failing to recapture his title against Bruno Girard in two close fights. He is one of very few Puerto Ricans to hold a world title above 168. Here is his story. Born on 13 July 1968 in Long Island City, New York, Del Valle was known under the boxing alias “Honey Boy”. He stands 6 feet tall and has a reach of 74 inches and fought from southpaw stance. This made him difficult to read and predict his punches, for orthodox fighters. He fought as amateur first and in 1989 fought Kirk Johnson (future heavyweight contender) in a USA vs Canada Dual Meet, losing to him by first round stoppage. “Honey Boy” turned pro in 1992 and won his 22 first fights, 15 by ko, before landing a shot at the WBA title, which was then held by the marvelous technician and fellow southpaw, Virgil Hill. The fight was held in Engelstad Arena, South Forks, North Dakota, 20 April 1996. Del Valle gave Hill a worthy challenge, but ultimately lost with the score of 113-114, 112-116 and 114-116. LDV then had one fight at cruiserweight against Ken McCurdy and easily won by TKO2 against overmatched opponent, before returning to 175 in his next fight. After winning three more fights, he was given a chance to win the vacant WBA belt, which had been stripped from Dariusz Michalczewski, who had previously taken it from Hill. He had to go to Germany to fight the former European champion, Dutchman Eddy Smulders, who had a record of 34-1, that lone loss coming against Fabrice Tiozzo. On 20 September 1997 in Aachen, Lou Del Valle became the world champion when he impressively won by TKO8. That would remain Smulders’ last loss. He then landed his biggest fight ever, a unification against the WBC champion and no.1 fighter in the division-Roy Jones junior. Del Valle had previously been Jones’ sparring partner, in 1995. The fight commenced on 18 July 1998 at Madison Square Garden and Jones dominated it and cut Del Valle over the left eye with an accidental headbutt in round seven, but in the next round the incredible happened: Lou first threw a straight right and then a left which hit Roy on the head as he was backing away and down he went, for the first time in his career! However, he got up and proceeded to dominate with his superior speed, reflexes and skills, but Del Valle lasted the distance. The scores were 119-108 and 118-109 twice. Del Valle made 850 K while Jones took home 2 million. He again fought for the vacant WBA title on 4 August 2001, but in Marseille, France, against the home favorite, the slick and lanky Bruno Girard. The fight ended a split draw, with each guy getting the decision from one judge and the third judge scoring it a draw. The decision was considered controversial in USA and WBA agreed, therefore a rematch was made, but again in France, 13 July 2002. Yet again, after the fight went the distance, the result was controversial-a split decision for Girard. That was Honey Boy’s last fight at 175 and he was inactive for 2003 before returning in 2004. He first won three fights on points, before fighting Zack Page on 20 October 2006 and losing by UD10. He also lost his next fight away in Denmark, on 14 September next year, to the local favorite Johny Jensen, by UD12, with the WBA Intercontinental title on the line. It was now clear Lou was not the same fighter anymore and moving up to a higher weight class had not done him good, as he was not big for a cruiser. He scored his last victory on 31 January 2008, besting the 6-6-1 Newton Kidd by SD8, before again losing to DeLeon Tinsley by UD8 on 18 July same year. His last fight happened on 31 October 2009, against former super middleweight, the 6’2 Joe Spina. The fight ended a majority draw after 10 rounds. Now aged 41, Lou Del Valle wisely retired with a record of 36 wins with 22 ko’s, 6 losses and 2 draws. He has never been stopped and it seems he was never dropped either, yet he dropped the probably best fighter in the world back then-that’s not a bad legacy! His sister Melissa was also a professional boxer and a respectable one, retiring with a record of 30-6-1. She fought under her married name Salamone most of her career and her alias was, fittingly, Honey Girl. Lou Del Valle was a world class boxer but his career took off just when Jones jr was dominating that same division, so he could never last too long as champion. His two fights with Girard, who was definitely world class, furthermore prove his worth. At 175, he was a puncher, but at 200, obviously he didn’t have that much power. He is still remembered today mainly for his knockdown of RJJ, but his career was more than just that.
