Mayweather Talks Cheating Margarito, Testing Pacquiao

By Mark Vester

During a recent appearance on the Sirius satellite radio program Shade 45, Floyd Mayweather Jr. spoke in detail about Antonio Margarito, a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao, and how they can set things right for the sport of boxing. The appearance was booked for Mayweather to discuss his future wedding and his pending legal issues, but the subject of boxing came around in the second half of the interview.

Mayweather was being hunted by Margarito back in 2006-2007. An offer of $8 million dollars was not enough to get Mayweather to accept Margarito. He instead took a fight with Carlos Baldomir and then sat back until a fight with Oscar De La Hoya was finalized. Mayweather claims that he knew something was fishy was Margarito all the way back in 2006.

"A lot of people wanted to see me and Antonio Margarito fight at one particular time. They said I was ducking and dodging Antonio Margarito. This is the same guy that was cheating. I told the world that there was something funny going on with Antonio Margarito. Come to find out that this guy was cheating and beating opponents with casts in his gloves," Mayweather said.

Mayweather says the sport of boxing has taken some hits because of the issue with Margarito and the past steroid use of Shane Mosley. He says a fight with Manny Pacquiao, with a strict drug testing protocol, will set things right for the sport of boxing and show everyone how boxing is a clean sport.

"I never said Pacquiao was on something. The only thing I’m saying is this - if I’m cheating or he’s cheating - then we’re cheating the fans. Let’s show the fans that the sport of boxing is clean. Let us both take the tests," Mayweather said.

Mayweather doesn't agree with Margarito being issued a license by the state of Texas for a November 13 showdown with Pacquiao.

"I can’t see how you [can] even give a guy like Antonio Margarito a [boxing] license. He was beating opponents with casts, one shot in this sport can end your whole career," Mayweather said.

Hatton was faster and had much better footwork than Margarito, but he was nowhere near as imposing or as durable as Margarito.

I don't think anybody truly believes Margarito would have ever beaten Mayweather.I personally don't see any fighter from 147-160 who would beat Mayweather even now,but these matches aren't won on paper.

I can't see anything about Margarito that would ever trouble Mayweather - he's just a bigger version of Hatton and with even less defence.

True, Gav, but that doesn't mean that Floyd shouldn't fight them anyway.

All Floyd fans (and I'm not saying you are one, Gav) respond that Floyd would beat whichever fighter when somebody says that he ducked that particular boxer.

But that's hardly the point, is it...

No, I'm not saying he should therefore not bother fighting - quite the opposite, inactivity annoys me. It's just the idea persists that Floyd was ducking Margarito as if out of fear, whereas I can't see anything about Margarito that would make him anything other than a sitting duck for Mayweather. Same sort of thing as I expect Pacquiao to do to Marg really.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing eh floyd u twat.

Fight manny or quit

why does nobody say this sort of stuff about Manny?

it takes two to tango

Manny may as well quit, he's proved himself, tested himself and has had the defining fights, unlike Mayweather.

After the Margarito fight, it will be interesting to see what happens after.

It HAS to be Mayweather vs Pacquiao or retire for both, unless Floyd plays it smart and goes to 154 to fight Cotto.

Well Mayweather beat De La Hoya at 154 before Manny got so much acclaim for beating him, butchered Hatton before Pacquiao did, humiliated Marquez and before that has the likes of Corrales on his CV. No weight restrictions, nothing.

So Manny only really has the odd one or two fights more than Floyd, and has insisted on weight clauses for two of them.

While Corrales may RIP, and he was such an exciting fighter, he's not a patch on Oscar, Cotto, Barrera, Marquez or Morales.

Leonard had done weight clauses for his fights more than Manny which is why I don't understand why Pac is more recognised for this.

Because Pacquiao's fans are so much more annoying!;) Also, Leonard was gone by time I got into boxing properly, or I might have said the same about him at the time too.

I agree, Barrera and Cotto were great wins completely unexpected, though he deserves no credit for beating DLH because DLH was a dead man walking(for the record I predicted a Pac win but was surprised to see DLH quit) and I don't think Marquez lost either fight even though I think he'd lose now. Morales wins were not that surprising given Morales was just about done(however much I tried not to believe at the time).

For me, Pacquiao's best wins are Cotto, Hatton and Barrera, and Cotto was a somewhat tainted victory.

I agree, Manny is doing nothing for his legacy fighting these fights, beating a Clottey, Margarito, etc. adds very little, he's already got his spot among the legends. Meanwhile, Floyd's already got his spot IN HIS MIND and thinks as long as he has his Zero, he's at least tied with any fighter who ever laced on a pair of gloves.......he doesn't seem to even care that nobody shares his opinion, or that he's tarnishing the good work he did by fighting so infrequently and appearing not to be willing to take on the best available.

Fair enough. Cotto came in at 146 for Clottey so I only saw the catchweight being a 1lb difference and not the 3 as officially referred to.

I can understand you not giving credit to Pac for the DLH win since your prediction was right but the majority said that it would be an easy win for Oscar.

I know Pacquiao fans can be a bit mad over their hero but considering the filipinos come from a third world country, it's good for them to have somebody to look up to, to represent what they have as a country.
