  1. Re: Did anyone attend the first Henry Cooper vs. Cassius Clay fight in 1963 ? Hi yes I attended both Clay/Ali vs Cooper fights and neither I or the lads I was with noticed any significant delay between the rounds,of course we were all up shouting when Henry put him over and it's highly possible that in the excitement that there could have been
  2. Back in the day Boxing News prided themselves on the fact that they in their words covered "every fight every week" and that used to be on the front cover,I notice now they have discarded that solgan, just as well for now it wouldn't ring true as they don't cover the WBU or MBC shows at all neither sending a reporter or asking for result, now that the Internet fully cover boxing world wide who now needs Boxing News,I have taken it since 1959 but come next week when my subscription expires that's it for me,unless BN changes and listens to its customers it looks to be heading in the same direction as the Dodo
  3. Re: What has been lost to modern boxing fans... To me this was a good fight but as for best fight I would go for Ali -Foreman,Duran and Leonard were pretty evenly matched it was an even call at the time,Ali v Foreman was so different Ali was not given a chance against big hitting George yet he took everything that George threw at him and just when we all thought he can't take much more of this he put together a salvo of punches to send the big man to sleep, that's the fight that sticks in my memory
  4. Re: Has Floyd Mayweather ducked his way to greatness? So who apart from Pacman has he not fought and beaten
  5. Re: Gavin vs Bundu - 29 press scores I thought Bundu won it well specially with the knock down,he could have made it a bit more convincing if he had not backed off in the last but he did complain of leg cramps after so that was possible the reason,Warren's attitude after was crap more or less say Gavin was robbed,I hope if Bundu takes a return it cost Warren plenty and with the same result, hometown boys don't always get the rub with European judges and that's how it should be in every fight
  6. Another good small hall show put on by Micky Helliet at The Camden Centre,13 bouts in all of which most were very competitive,1st of the night was Lightweight 4 3s between James Chiericato and Jonathan Fry ,In the first round James quickly got his jab to work both to the body and the head,Fry's best work was done when he got close, the 2nd saw James having the best of a scrappy round,3rd started with Fry boring in on James to earn himself possible share of the points which must have been Fry's last throw of the dice as in the final round Chiericato was back on top to run out a $0 -37 winner on Referee Kieran McCann's card. Next up was another 4 3s with German Yasin Basar took on Kiri Psonko at Light Middle Yasin got of to a good start putting pressure on Kril beating him to the punch,2nd round was more of the same with Kril walking forward without throwing.next 2 rounds followed the same pattern with Psonko doing even less I called it a shut out but Ref McCann saw it 39-38 to the German 4-3s again this time at Light-heavy Sam Piaseckiv matched against replacement Illiev nip and tuck the first while they sized each other up,Into the 2nd and Iliev found some aggression and for me shaded the round, the 3rd was a better round for Sam when he listened to the advice coming from his corner an kept his man on the end of his jab,the last round had the same pattern Sam jabbing Iliev resorting to charging and swinging,Ref Kieran saw it a draw 38 all. 5th contest 4-3s brought together Warren Fenn and Gareth Piper Refereed by Jeff Hinds not much happening in the first when out of the blue Piper caught Fenn and put him down heavy he beat the count but was on plastic legs up to the end of the round,2nd round saw Fenn giving Piper more respect and it was pretty even, the third saw Warren coming more into it with Piper either taking a blow or beginning to feel the pace but probably doing enough for a share of the points, into the last and both men realising it could rest on who won this round went for it and quite honestly it could have been called either way, as it was Mr Hinds saw it a Draw 38-38 which caused some derision from Pipers corner Bout number 6 at Light Welter was between Kay Pospere V Lubos Priehradnik a really tough guy from Slovakia , the four rounds followed the same pattern throughout with Lubos's face rarely failing to find the gloves of Pospere And Mr McCann's 40-36 could have been wider. So to the 6th on the card and this time George Michael Carman in with Grigoris Dunecs George on top from the start and the only time Grigoris came into it was when Carman let him, carman did enough in each round to win comfortably ,with more urgency about his work he may even have stopped his man Mr Hinds scored it 40-36 to George. 7up and the heat was rising in the Camden Centre ,Super Middle weights Daryl Williams and Danny Brown went at it over 4-3s ,the first was the usual feeling out round,Williams not fazed at all by the southpaw Brown came out for the 2nd intent on getting Brown out of there and very nearly pulled it off when he had Brown over after a flurry of punches and Daryl finished the round busting his man up,the 3rd and 4th followed likewise and Mr McCann called it 39-37 the only score of the night I saw different. 8th bout Light Welter Gavin Tait v Bheki Moyo, round one and Gavin is straight to work catching Moyo coming in,2nd round more of the same from Tait Moyo warned for head work ,Tait in charge,3rd and Tait is in complete control, last round and both go toe to toe with Tait coming out the winner 40-37 from Jeff Hinds. 9th contest if that the right word was a 4-3s Heavy weight bout between Ian Lewison and Croatian Hrvoje Kisicek both looking to be carrying more weight than needed both looking for the big shot with Lewison having more luck than Hrvoje, the pace slowed even more in round 2 Ian doing the better work but his shots having little effect on the big Croat,3rd and 4th rounds much the same with Ian throwing big punches at the head and body of this human punch bag,no surprise when Kieron's acre was announced as 40-36 to Lewison. Bout number 10 was a Light Welter4-3s where Ricky Hatton boxer Anthony Upton having only his 4th bout faced Polish Arek Malek having his 87th,a clash of heads early in round 1 left Malek cut between the eyes but did not effect the outcome as Upton boxed his way to victory 40-36 from Jeff Hinds. 11th fight of a very long hot night was at middle weight again$-3s Graham Tirrell v Ben Robinson bit of bragging rights match with both boys from Hertfordshire,Tirrell having his second pro bout against Robinson's 4th (all loses) graham was not become Ben's first win as he dictated from the go,looked to be wanting it more and picked up a 40-36 win from Mr Hinds. getting near exhaustion now me not the boxers, number !2 what should have been main event but wasn't,6-3s John Ryder v Rusians Pojonisevs at middle while never in dispute as to who was going to win the Latvian gave John 6 hard rounds and if that was why John took this pretty meaningless fight then it served it's purpose,John went through his stockroom of punches never moving Rusians predictable John winning 40-36 from Ref McCann. arriving at the 13 and last bout of the night I for one was hoping for an early finish and I got my wish when Elliott Mathews Despatched one Attla Tibor Nagy after about 2 mins of the first round in truth Nagy like me looked as though he didn't want to be there in this heat at that hour, but all in a good nights boxing,LONG LIVE THE SMALL HALLS
  7. Re: Norwich show I would not say anyone on the bill last night is going to set the world of boxing alight they were good small hall boxers earning a few quid, the only title material on show was probably Ryan Walsh, you could see the steely look in his eyes he is so focused, the other guys on the show should try to get some sparring with him they can learn a lot from just watching how he goes about his preparation,Young Fury is going to earn a few quid, there is always money for heavyweights and right now the name Fury is a draw on it's own,the other house boxers may make to area title shots or maybe some of these Masters belts that you only need a pulse to fight for but I don't see them going beyond that
  8. I know people must get fed up with me banging on about small hall boxing, last night was another really good nights boxing at Norwich Epic Centre,a Shamrock promotions 7 fight bill where only the first bout was a not very competitive Super feather Lowestoft's Craig Poxton dominated every round against Qasim Hussain Sheffied in a 4-3s and ran out 40- 36 winner on Bob Williams Card, Next up was a Welterweight bash Danny Little, Driffield who gave Local Boy Nathan Dale a good fight but after taking an 8 count in round 2 became more cautious and never really threatened dale again referee Bob Wiliams who handled all the bouts saw it 60-53 to dale . bout number 3 saw another local lad Joe Payne come unstuck against Rocdale's Jason McArdle in a 4_3s at first couple of rounds pretty even with both boys landing and taking some heavy shots possible the most telling punches coming from Jason, joe does tend to lead with his face and this proved his down fall in the 4th and last when Jason caught him with a couple of heavy shot and after drive him around the ring the Referee stepped in to save Payne further if you'll excuse the pun further Pain,Defiantly worth the 5 hour trip for him and trainer. 4th bout on the card was a Welterweight bout between Gareth Shove from Sittingbourne against Frinton on sea lad Danny Gunn, fairly even first round,Gunn settled in the second score to the head and body then seemed to take his foot off in the next allowing Shove to get a share of the action before coming back in the last to get Mr Williams nod 38-37. next we had the debut fight of another Heavyweight of the fighting Fury family when Young Fury Manchester met and despatched Rolandas Cessna Lithuania in the 3rd round after Cessna had 2 trips to the canvas Referee Mr Williams had seen enough by 2 minutes 15 sec of the round RSF ,Early to say how good he will be as after only 3 Amateur fights he is obliviously green round the edges but does have good upper body movement. Bout number 6 was a Middle weight 4-3s between Kieron Gray Telford in with Billy Bird Sudbury Suff,Billy got straight to the task working both body and head continuing the same in the second the third followed the same pattern with Gray getting into it a bit more and in fact I thought he just about did enough to win the last when Billy seemed to stand off his man wether from tiredness or knowing he had done enough Bob Williams saw it 40 -37 to Bird. Top of the bill was Ryan Walsh Cromer having his first fight since losing to Lee Selby for the British title up against a very tough kid in Ibrar Riyaz from Reading at Feather who gave him the rounds he needed after months out there was never any doubt who the winner was going to be but the lad kept it alive by firing back whenever Ryan stepped it up both boxers were given a rousing applause at the end Bob Williams at the end of a very busy night scored it 60-54,All in another very good small hall promotion us true boxing fans must get out and support these shows they are after all the life blood of our sport
  9. Re: Dick Richardson Even in a losing fight Dick was always entertaining ,he fought some of the top heavyweights of the time and usually gave his best
  10. Re: To go against what some may think... I could have written this thread ,agree with every word, for me there was only one omission that being Super feather Mitchell Smith out with injury of late but a real prospect for more titles ( he already has the southern area ) hard punching with good movement can see him fighting for the British late this year early next
  11. Re: Could you put up with Wladimir Klitschko for another 10 years? Heavyweight boxing plays a very small part in my enjoyment of boxing and it really doesn't bother me one way or the other how long Klitschko stays as champion, with a few exceptions he has beaten all that have faced him and until someone outstanding comes on the scene he can pretty well do as he wishes, ten years might be a bit optimistic but who knows it's not as though he expends much energy in his fights
  12. Re: The Boxing Book thread - Recommendations Thanks mate,it looks a good on about an unsung hero
  13. Re: The Boxing Book thread - Recommendations Just had a friend given me the Tiger Flowers book "Georgia Tiger" haven't started it yet has anyone read it
  14. Re: Robbery of the Year For me it is Burns Beltran
  15. Re: P4P Top 10 - Ringnews24 needs YOUR List GGG Kovalev Mayweather Pacquiao Marquis Doñaire Stevenson Froch Groves Klitschko
  16. Re: Matchroom or Warren - Which Saturday show appeals more? As I will be going to the Copper box it has to be Warren's show for me
  17. After battering their way through what passes as todays top heavies the Klitschko's have stated that they are waiting on the new bread coming through namely Price, Fury, I 'm sure one if not both teams will jump in with both feet putting their golden goose in over their heads long before they are ready. yes they are OK knocking over close to retirement British and the odd down the hill Yanks but either Klitschko is a totally different proposition,Let the K brothers carry on beating the likes of Helenius and Povetkin which they will do with ease meanwhile our two prospects face each other to determine the best, then work through the strong Europeans and Americans , then if the brothers still hold the belts that will be the time to challenge not when they are still both little more than novices.I know at the end of the day the $ rules and ability comes a very short second but if your good enough their chance at glory will still be big money 18 months down the road
  18. As this would appear to be by reading other post limited to current boxers I find it impossible to find ten apart from the Klitschko's, the rest of the worlds motley crew just put in any order you like they are all bums.As for British Heavies Haye, Fury, Price,Chisora,Mc Dermott.
  19. Don't these Manager/ Promoters talk a load of bollocks at times Scott Harrison in reality is only two drinks away from his next fall from grace, after 6 years out he has no chance against anyone in the top ten at whatever weight he fights at
  20. Bruce baker does make some sound points, namely that the board are not a body elected by it's members even at area level, the treat to exclude boxer from their insurance cover that they themselves have paid for does seem to be a bit of a knee jerk decision on the boards behalf,I am surprised that there has been no comment from the PBA where Nicky Piper And Barry McGuigan are the leading lights they surely must have something to say after all it is going to effect some of their members. While I have no desire to see this farce happen and certainly not at my clubs ground I do think that a sit down discussion rather than emails flying about is the way that this will get sorted and if the only good thing to come out of it is that the BBBoC move into the 21 century and get rid of some of the old buffers a get a mix of board members the reflect the changing face of British Boxing
  21. I realise i may be in a very small minority but I have absolutely no interest in this farce that is being put forward as all most the fight of the century, for one thing no way should these two clowns be in a British ring until first off Chisora serves out his ban and secondly Haye applies for and gets a British licence. after thats out of the way lets discuss what sort of fight we could expect between two boxers coming off losing fights (3 in Chisora's case), Without doubt the event will banned hyped up way beyond it's potential, the general public will buy into the hype for what will be little more than a pub brawl, what amazes me is reading some of the post from guys I've always thought of as knowledgable boxing fans also being swept up in the hype. this fight if it goes ahead will do nothing for British boxing and will only undermine what little authority the BBBOC has left, I await with interest for any statement that the board put out on this situation, if all Europe's boxing boards don't stand together on discipline and boxers banned by one board can just move to another and carry on boxing why bother having boxing boards at all
  22. It's beyond being boring now, can Froch never open his mouth without slagging of Joe Calzaghe, get a fucking life mate when Joe was boxing you had done nothing worth you getting a title shot, your only successes came after Joe retired, Oh & sorry didn't you loose to a guy Joe beat, cut your own legacy stop wailing on trying to destroy a man's legacy you would love to get halfway near
  23. There's some that can respond to help & some that can't, then are those that a total waste of ozygen take your pick
  24. You say that if you shout long & hard enough everyone will believe your the best, well I may be on my own but I don't think I am when I say only your actions inside the ring will convince me of your true status, no amount of bull shit promoter talk will work for guys that know & love their boxing
  25. Right guy right time for Fury,Martin is no longer the animal he was 2/3years ago, he may cause Tyson problems for maybe two rounds after that tyson wears him down for stoppage anytime after 6
