  1. Re: The Boxing Tree Aye, Dave... Its a lost cause, methinks! I lost a lot of appetite for the game when it started with interim, full, emeritus etc etc :( Its all wrong... and they know it... money talks louder though!
  2. The Boxing Tree by Graham Bradbury In sport, as well as other walks of life, from time to time you hear the descriptive, praising words, ‘He’s at the top of the tree!’ Now this got me thinking… Years ago, in my sport, there was ONE World Champion at each weight. To get to the ‘top of the tree’, you’d have to work your way steadily climbing the branches until you were high enough to get your shot at the current Champion, then rip the belt from his grasp. Then and only then, could you call yourself the Champion of the World and be ‘top of the tree’! In more recent years, as politics and greed ensued, the boxing tree grew many more branches until it was actually possible to climb your way AROUND and up to the next level, even avoiding and by-passing a more dangerous route completely. Nowadays, the man at the top can scream ‘I am the best, I am Champion of the World’ when in fact, he may not have faced the best fighters en-route! So the guys who were avoided shout up to him, ‘No you’re not, at least not until you’ve faced me’! The reply from the Champion is ‘He’s nothing, I am the Champion, I have the belt to prove it!’ And so it goes on… I am often asked if I think the fighters of old would have stood a chance against the modern day fighters… Fair question, but first can you answer this… How many of the modern day fighters could go on for 15, 18, 25, 30, 50, 80, 100 rounds to prove they are ‘Top of the Boxing Tree’? It will never happen in my lifetime, but I hope beyond all hope, that someday sanity will defeat the aforementioned greed and politics… One governing body, one Champion at each weight, one man at the top of the tree…!
  3. As an ex ama, I know a lot about boxing... But there are guys on here who could run rings round me with facts, history and trivia etc.... I respect them immensly for their knowledge and insight. I was laughed of the beeb forum circa 2005 for stating both Khan and Lewis would get tagged... Oh wait... It did happen! That was simply my experience picking out a basic flaw in them both. So, from that point, I suppose I had a slight analytical advantage... But to the point, no, it doesn't matter if someone hasn't participated in a sport, as long as they have gained in-depth knowledge of their chosen sport by other means... Adding to Gav's point, I'm thinking Lawrie McMenamy who was manager of Southampton etc...
  4. I am on record on the old beeb boards and on banter, circa 2005, predicting khan's defensive problems would see him tagged and getting stopped throughout his career. I was laughed at when I first made the suggestion... After khan's first pro bout, if memory serves. I'll repeat the main points here and now... Khan NATURALLY carries his hands too low. Even though they have worked hard on his defence in the gym, watch his hands return to his guard when he's throwing combos... The get lower every time his hands draw back, then when he's finished and steps back, only then does he raise his hands the few inches to guard his chin. This shows it's a learned movement and not natural for him. Khan will ALWAYS be susceptible to a big shot! Let's face it, if a light puncher, albeit good technician, like willie limmond can floor him, it doesn't bode well for him against anyone with a dig! I have always said, and I stick by it... Khan is not as good as he thinks he is. Sure, good enough to make his millions, good enough to hold a world title, but elite fighter....? Hell no!
  5. I have always admired Willie's ring craft and ability. If only he had a dig... He'd easily have been a WT holder methinks...
  6. I have no problem with women boxing. I remember Gareth posted me videos of 6 Eastside kids in their debut AMA bouts... I picked out 2 straight away and reckoned they would do well... Luke Wilton is now no1 ranked contender for the British fly title and Carly MCNaul has gave a good account of herself too. I think I'm correct in saying both were regional and all Ireland AMA champs. Carly reminds me of... Me at the same age! Same style!! clap//
  7. Carly was up against Sam Smith, past British and European champion I believe... Anyway, Carly made a fantastic start and as the fight neared the middle rounds, was even with the much more experienced and hugely taller Smith Sam caught Carly in the 5th which resulted in a standing 8. In the 6th, Carly's coach threw the towel in after Sam had caught Carly several times with head shots. Afterwards, the two girls were full of respect for each other, both agreeing they had never been hit as hard. Despite Sam winning, it was Carly who recieved a standing ovation at the end... Sam's coach saying 'That girl has the heart of a Lion'! Well done Carly McNaul.... Be proud, very proud! Congratulations to Sam Smith, I'm sure a WT shot might be on the cards soon!
  8. Anyone any info on a boxing show in leeds this weekend??? Apparently Carly McNaul is fighting for the WBF Intercontinental title... In her debut as a pro!!!!! I hope she carrys her good ama record into the pro game, mind.
  9. Took the words clean outa my mouth, BB... Joe Calzaghe is definately my pick!
  10. I find myself agreeing with McBride... Duran!
  11. Just Another Boxing Tree By Graham Bradbury (aka TheRealSeer) In days gone bye, there was only one way to the top of the tree. You would have to work your way up the branches and beat the champion to be top dog. Nowadays, there are so many different routes. If you don’t like the look of the guy on the branch above, it’s possible to take a diversion and scale easier branches. The guys at the top… Yes, the top of the tree is wider these days… will yell ‘I am the champ, I’m top dog!’ But the guy a branch or two below might say, ‘But you got there without fighting me, so how can you claim to be top dog?’ Only for the champ to reply, ‘Prove I’m not’ And so it is with the modern game… Ruined by greedy sanctioning bodies who care only for the cash and not the integrity of the sport. Ruined by politics where we are denied seeing the fights that should happen and would have happened in the old days. I have lived long enough to witness this horrible demise. How many times do we see someone unify all the titles, become a real champion at the top of the tree, lord and master of all below, only for one of the sanctioning bodies to ‘strip’ their version of the title? Ermitus, Supreme, blah blah blah champions… All gobbledygook crap! Will I live long enough to see a sensible conclusion and a return to the way it should be? I doubt it, but I live in hope!
  12. Its no secret that I hold Peter in very high esteem. As I have said many times, our sport wouldn't survive without the Peter Buckley's of this world. Respect to a great man! Good interview.
  13. Rhys Pagan - Welter - Been watching this lad all through the ama ranks.. He'll go far!
