Happy Birthday Percy Jones

The first World champion produced by Wales. He died on Christmas Day 100 years ago. Ironically, he was born on Boxing Day. He hailed from the town of Porth, Rhondda, Wales.
Percy became World Flyweight champion in January 1914. He defended it successfully against Frenchman Eugene Criqui. He never lost the belt in the ring but failed to make weight and was beaten by the great Tancy Lee. World War One cut his career short, he was shot in the leg which later had to be amputated.
His weight dropped to a little over 4 stone, and he died of trench fever in 1922 on Christmas Day, one day short of his 30th birthday.
Boxrec lists his career record as 50-3-3, 30 KOs. He held British, EBU and IBU World titles.

We may suffer our modern injustices of slings and arrows hurled our way, but few of us can imagine much less top Percy and his generation terribly sacrificed in that horrid War...R.I.P...

Only a couple of years later Jimmy Wilde was champion. Wales could produce them back then. For a country of 3 million, we punch above our weight.
