Cleverly v Bellew - 15th October 2011

Recommended Posts

Early reports are that Nathan Cleverly's second defence of the WBO Light-heavy strap will be against bitter rival Tony Bellew, and will take place on 15th October 2011 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool.

Confirmation of this is set to be announced on Tuesday, 30th August.

Any thoughts on -

Too early for Bellew?

Does he deserve a World title shot?

Early predictions?

Does Warren own the WBO???!!!

Its a big fight over in the UK and will make decent money, WBO can saction it because its a voluntary defence against someone in there top 15.

Bellew doesnt deserve it but should be a good build and decent couple of rounds. I expect Cleverly to win big, but you never know.

You're right about the WBO rankings. I consider myself to have a quite good knowledge of boxing but looking at these rankings I'm rather lost!!! Take away Murat, Dawson and Bellew, and being honest, I struggle to identify (or pronounce!) many others without consulting Boxrec!!!

Not happy about it being in Liverpool.

Let the champ fight in Cardiff.

I don't think Clev will be tested in this fight.

It is one of those fights where it is his to lose it I guess.

At this moment in time I predict a Clev TKO win in the 11th.

Very good point, I feel a bit sorry for Nathan Cleverly as Warren has not really built up a good fanbase for him. The last time he had Cleverly fight at home, in Wales, was 2007 (on the undercard of Calzaghe v Kessler). Anyone else think this is a disgrace?!

A mismatch on paper, but I do worry about Clev's concentration levels at times. He was caught clean and briefly rocked by the Pole he fought last time out, despite being clearly levels above his opponent. Bellew, if nothing else, can bang and pretty hard too. If the Welshman lets his guard down similarly against Bellew... who knows? One punch and all that. However, I get the impression Clevely genuinely doesn't like Bellew and I can't see him not being up for this one.

Not to mention the French guy Mohammedi who caused him a few problems. The fact that its a UK v rival UK fighter i think will raise Clevs game also if it is in Liverpool he wont have a choice to up his game also. Clev easy nights work inside 6.

I agree, Bud, it's one where Cleverly SHOULD raise his game and have an easy time of it, but if he doesn't then you have to wonder what would motivate him if this doesn't.

I'm not interested in this fight in the slightest.

Bellew is mince, and is nowhere even close to world level, he showed against Ovill MacKenzie that he's barely even British level, as this guy is a journeyman and he really really struggled.

He's fortunate that he's got a big mouth and managed to talk his way into a fight for a world title, and it's a typical Warren fight - one guy with next to no chance spouting off enough to make some people buy into the fact he might have a chance, and make it an easy nights work and payday for his star pupil.

You can't ask for much more as a promoter, but as a fan, I would demand a hell of a lot more than this nonsense for a world title strap.

Even worse, I can picture it being PPV knowing Frank's track record...

...He'll "line up" a couple of other decent level fights to compliment it, and they'll mysteriously fall through at the 11th hour, yet everyone will still be asked to fork out.

I've seen this guy promote enough shows to see how it's going to go down already...

He has potential to get great crowds.

He has showed his belts during Cardiff City fooball games and Welsh rugby games.

Apparently Warren's pushing to get DeGale's Euro title fight on the undercard, as well as a Groves-Anderson rematch.

Shaping up to be a good night of boxing if so.

Let me know when the card's confirmed and I can start taking bets on training injuries/scheduling difficulties/sudden collapse of contract negotiations.

Anderson is a typical Warren fight - Groves already beat him and has moved on to beat DeGale, while Anderson has moved up in weight. What is the point in fighting him again? Seems like losing a fight is better for your career than winning one these days.

That would be good.

I would be chuffed with just DeGale.

In today's Press Conference Warren announced that the winner would meet Bernard Hopkins (if he is successful against Chad Dawson on the same night).

Imagine if Bellew does pull off shock win - can you imagine Bellew v Hopkins? Hilarious!

Cleverly ko's bellow first half of the fight. I'm a clev fan and I admit work but bellow is crude and wil. Be soon undone he talks a better fight than he gives. As for Hopkins it depends on how good a sell warren could put on the fight. A calzaghe revenge for old pop? Or a unification? Ut I'm not sure the big sell is there. Saying that if he beats Dawson ur looking at clev or a super middle weight riser
