Cotto wants 150 catchweight

BoxingScene.com recently reported that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto's team is asking for a December 3rd rematch with Antonio Margarito to take place at a catch-weight of 150 pounds.

BoxingScene caught up with Margarito's trainer Robert Garcia to get his thoughts on the catch-weight request. Garcia said that he heard that the fight had already been agreed upon at the full junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds and that Cotto's team is just trying to mess with Margarito's head.

"My understanding is that there is a contract already in place for the fight to take place at 154. They are just playing games," Garcia told BoxingScene.

Throughout boxing's history there have been many fights fought with catch-weights in place but in the past 5 years they seem to be more prevalent. Manny Pacquiao's fights versus Margarito and Cotto come to mind. So do the Bernard Hopkins versus Winky Wright, Roy Jones versus Felix Trinidad and Paulie Malignaggi versus Juan Diaz just to name a few.

Garcia thinks that Cotto's team may think that this is the only fight out there for Margarito so they are trying to suck him down with the catch-weight. The trainer who has seen his popularity boom in the past year insists that his fighter can't get down to 150 anymore.

"They just see all these catch-weights nowadays. They think this is the only option for Tony but Tony can't make 150. If they want to keep insisting on 150 then maybe there is no fight."

I was recently advised that a compromise of a 152 pound catchweight was also

being mentioned. The Oxnard, CA based trainer feels that is a more realistic

number but feels that Cotto should defend his title at the weight in which he

won it.

"152, that is something different. Tony and his manager (Sergio Diaz) can take a look at it. Cotto won the title (and defended it) at 154. If he wants to fight lower he should go back to 147."

They've had the details worked out for this one for some time now, I find it hard to believe that weight wasn't agreed upon some time ago, this is probably just an article with the sole intent of getting some press coverage.

Cotto doesn't seem the kind of guy to bother with catchweights so maybe it is just mind games like it says.

Hehehehe, funny how all the Pakow fanboys claimed Marg had no problems making 150 to face their little hero, yet when his trainer says he cant make 150 anymore only 9 months later Cotto is accused of looking for an unfair advantage, or worse, a way out.

Thats what being a fanboy is all about though I suspect.

Or alternatively god forbid a fanboy would accuse a trainer of lying to justify his adulation of his hero, eh?

They tell me there are still Tottenham fans who swear Jurgen Klinsman never dived. lol//

Well lets look at it frankly, Margarito's past trainer is alledged to have tampered with his gloves, his current trainer has been seen mocking Roach, so it's hardly, really, as if they are above ever doing anything wrong. Garcia has also has his integrity question in regards to his comments about Victor Ortiz...bending the truth to get his man the upper hand is something EVERY trainer will do if they can...

But anyway your point was "only 9 months later", so lets go with that rather than the obvious fact they are playing mind games. In February 2007 Tomasz Adamek weighed 175, just 4 months later Adamek weight 197...think Adamek could have got back to 175 despite it only being 4 months?

Hardly defending Pacquiao by pointing out either of these things,

some more things to add. Robert Garcia said, prior to the Pacquiao fight that Margarito could make 151lbs (NOT 150), the 151lbs was of course the Pacquiao catchweight...was Garcia telling the truth both times then?

Margarito has only weight above 151 4 times in his career, just ONCE in the previous 6 years!

I dont care what Adamek did or didn't or could or coundn't do. Jones went up to around 190 for Ruiz and went back to 175, so its horses for courses.

Just look at what you have written, you are intimating Margarito's trainer is a liar, and that there are rules for Cotto, and different ones for Pakow. In fact you will write anything rather than admit Pakow demanded Margarito weigh a max 150, because he was afraid to fight him at 154.

I'm blankly saying "ALL TRAINERS SAY WHAT THEY CAN TO GET THEIR MAN THE ADVANTAGE" (capitalised just incase you are deliberately missing what I've said more than once already). Roach does it, Garcia does it, EVERY trainer does it. If they can get their guy an advantage you're damn right they will. Heck I'm almost certain Booth said Haye was 100% fit for the Klitschko fight.

EVERY trainer lies when he thinks he can get an advantage, whether it's psychological OR physical.

Again I'll add, Margarito had weighed in above 147 ONCE in the previous 6 years, 9 of his previous 10 fights took place at Welterweight and he was as low at 145.5 for the Mosley fight.

Anmd I'll say IT AGAIN, make your f***ing mind up. Either you are waffling on about a fighter going up in weight, and in your opinion he wont be able to come back down again. You knowing everything of course cant be wrong. However if a fighters trainer says my guy has gone up and cant come back down, he is lying.

What are you on, apart from ego inflammatory tablets?

I'm saying his trainer said, 9 months ago "he can make 151" (which he did), now the same trainer says he can't make 150. The SAME trainer. My view is that Garcia will say whatever he can to try and get his man the advantage. The only time I said a fighter won't be able to go back down was Adamek, using him as an example as to how "9 months" can make a big difference.

I don't see any Pacquiao fans saying that Cotto's looking for an unfair advantage? Where are these people? And in regards to your point that Pac was too scared to fight Marg at 154lb, there are two points to be made here:

1. At least Pac fought him. Did Floyd accept Margarito's challenge?

2. It's most likely Arum and Roach doing most of the dealing, not Pacquiao.

i think that's a real poor line of thought. given the context of the fight (catchweight, paper title, neither having fought in the division before, margs looking poor in a comeback post KTFO), to me there's not much more there than a stay busy fight. whatever stock you put in betting lines, that it was 6:1 for pac the whole time, to me, says a lot

Quit the handbags now lads, apparently Margarito's manager has come out and said the fight is signed for a catchweight of 153 pounds which seems a bit pointless to me.

There's also rumours of a 'day of the fight' weigh in as well with a 160 pound limit. Don't think that's true though.

Calling this fight a "stay busy" fight is a "real poor train of thought" in itself! Neither have fought in the division? What division? A catchweight isn't a division. And I'm not sure you thinking what Margarito's comeback fight after Mosley that took place over a year ago has anything to do with this.

Margarito never looked poor in his comeback fight after Mosley despite what people say. He dropped his opponent and won every round. It was your usual comeback performance that a lot of boxers put in. I've seen many peole say this about the Robert Garcia fight and I think that's a lot of denial thinking on their part that he looked poor.

Hilarious to actually think he was being trained by Robert and fought Roberto.

Using betting lines to value and devalue fights is a little bit daft btw. Mayweather is best priced 1/6 to beat Ortiz, (and currently as bad as 1/12), he was around 1/4 to beat Marquez (think i managed to get 1/3 on that and thought it was a complete steal), and 1/5 for Mosley IIRC. Had every Mayweather fight since Hatton been a "stay busy" fight then?...If so he's hardly stayed busy ;-)

Could be true mate, there was a max of 145 by fight time put on JLC when he couldn't make 135 against Corrales, with Diego actually the heavier by 3 lbs when they entered the ring.

i meant no disrespect calling it a poor line of thought, though clearly it came out that way. sorry about that

a fight at 150 lbs is a junior middleweight fight, like it or not. perhaps margs didn't look totally poor, but can you look yourself in the mirror and think "man this guy NEEDS to fight pac! he's got a real shot to do it!" after the roberto garcia fight? i sure can't. the only proper chance i recall margarito having, was good body work, which he managed at one point then got his face broken because he moves as well as molasses on a cold day. margarito is a tough bastard, but he was never in that fight from the moment he signed, which sure looks to me like a stay busy fight for a top fighter (though you might say the same about shane mosley, and thus it begins to come clear how i feel about pacquiaos recent run of opponents)
