fightfan
Do you think Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are avoiding Martinez and is he overrated?
RAZZ-MCFC
I genuinely think Pacquiao just doesn't have any interest in the Martinez fight, i don't blame him, Martinez is a beast and there's no way Martinez can make 150 which is what Manny and Freddie would want the fight to be at, but in fairness to Manny, there's no way he can make 154 either which is Sergio's minimum. Manny couldn't even make the 150 limit against Margarito, he still weighs in at like 146-147 I've just posted a thread where DiBella says he thinks Floyd may fight Martinez next year if Manny-Floyd doesn't happen. It's a fight that really interests me, but can Floyd make 154? I think Floyd still wins but it'd be a fantastic fight and one i want to see. And on to the topic question, no, i don't think Maravilla is overrated. Avoided? yes but not overrated. He's come a hell of a way since the fighter that lost to Margarito, and i think Martinez beats Margarito in a rematch now, which is another fight i'd love to see. gavpowell
He doesn't have to make 154, just 148 or above, as he did with DLH when he weighed 150.. But I imagine 154 wouldn't be a big deal.

Floyd-Martinez is a mouth watering fight thinking about it. I'd definitely go to it if Floyd-Manny didn't happen (again)
gavpowell
It'd certainly be interesting to see how Floyd deals with a bigger man who's also a pressue fighter. I don't know that Martinez is overrated per se - I think he's an excellent fighter, he's just finally started getting real opposition in recent years. RAZZ-MCFC
It'd certainly be interesting to see how Floyd deals with a bigger man who's also a pressue fighter. Martinez is a class technical boxer as well. But i don't think that would come in to play at all, nobody can compete with Floyd when it comes to a chess match. The only way i see him being able to beat Floyd is by imposing his size advantage and keeping the pressure on constantly for 12 rounds. That also suits Floyd to an extent as well though because he thrives off come forward pressure fighters as he's so good at counter punching. One advantage Martinez does have is that southpaw stance. It'd give Floyd more trouble than if he was orthodox.
Skav
That knockout of Paul Williams really put Martinez up there, and perhaps some are slightly overrating him because of it. He's not a boxer to be taken lightly, however, and Martinez can only get better in the future. But at this stage, he's probably overrated only because people have gone a bit too crazy over him for knocking out somebody who was looking to be on the slide for a while. The warning signs started to show with Williams when he faced Cintron. His timing was way off and he was missing a lot until Cintron turned into Superman. iamasadlittleboy
The win over Dzinziruk was hugely impressive
WelshDevilRob
I did think he was a little while back but he seems to keep on impressing so I would say no.
davemurphy
I think they're avoiding him simply from a business standpoint, I don't think either fears him in the Ring. It kind of shows how the Middleweight Title has lost prestige over recent times, or how the plethora of available belts has cheapened things and soiled the landscape. In the old days the Welterweight Champs wouldn't have hesitated in their desire to add what was boxing's second biggest prize, the Middlweight Title, to their resume............especially when the current Champ was not a natural MW and had moved up to that weight himself. But then again, both Floyd and Manny aren't actually Welters in my book. It's a "World Gone Mad" in terms of the weight classes and belts, and day before weigh-ins. But as far as his being overrated, it flows from Paul Williams being a bit overrated, and a rising tide raises all boats.
grapevine241
i dont think martinez is any more overrated than most any other P4P caliber fighter. however, like davemurphy said, it does flow a bit from paul williams being overrated. like iam, i was impressed with the way he beat dzinziruk
londoner
The first 10 years of his career was a bit bland. He wasn't a big name in boxing until the mid-late 2000s. His biggest wins before 2009 were Alex Bunema and Saul Roman. But from 2009 onwards he's had a draw with Cintron, a controversial loss to Williams, a UD win over Pavlik (the number one MW in the World), a devastating KO win over Williams and a brutal win over Dzinziruk. His early record isn't impressive but the last 2 years he's been very impressive.
Wheelchair
I don't see why Mayweather and Manny should be 'forced' to fight Martinez anyway.
davemurphy
I don't see why Mayweather and Manny should be 'forced' to fight Martinez anyway. I agree. I think it'd be one hell of a feather in their cap if they went for a MW Title, and it'd be the one thing that they could do that might elevate them into the pantheon of the P4P All Time Greats like SRR, Armstong, Greb, etc. that are revered like Gods by Boxing Historians.....but as far as REQUIRING them to do it? I can't see assigning any negative points whatsoever, and think it's strange that others do.
