George Groves is set to sign for promoter Matchroom in a deal he hopes will take him to the highest level.

The British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion has been promoted by Hayemaker – the company of ex-world heavyweight champ David Haye.

But unbeaten Groves, 23, is now considering teaming up with Eddie Hearn at Matchroom, founded by his father Barry, who also promotes Nottingham’s WBC world super-middleweight champ Carl Froch.

Froch, 34, takes on rival world champion Andre Ward, of America, on October 29 and Groves hopes he will be ready for the likes of them next year.

Groves beat fellow Londoner and bitter rival James DeGale on points in May – and could face Scotland’s Kenny Anderson next.

He said: “I am on top of the pile but the idea is still the same and Adam Booth reckons it is 18 months before I am fighting the top men like Carl Froch and Andre Ward.

“Froch and Ward are where I want to be in 18 months.

“I have a British and Commonwealth title to defend and a world ranking to work on.

“There are plenty of fights to keep me busy before I face the likes of Carl Froch.”
