And now we know why the WBC created Bridgerweight.

How is Makabu gonna' make 190 lbs and still be able to fight?

Typical Canelo BS.

--- Cruiser 200 lb limit, same as the start for BridgetteWt. Makabu not a big cruiser been 194-193 at least thrice if not 4x in his career, the last being 3 years ago.

The WBC is going to drop it to 190. Certainly before Canelo fights again. This was always their stated plan:

According to Wki (not always accurate, but this can't be an error)

"The WBC intend to reduce the lower limit for the (Bridgerweight) weight class to 190 pounds (86 kg; 13 st 8 lb), lowering the upper limit for cruiserweight accordingly, within "six months or one year" of the November 2020 announcement."

And I read somewhere else, in a quote from someone reliable (I forgfet who) that this was the plan from the beginning.

--------------------

Makabu is getting older and hence heavier. It's not hard to check Boxrec and see that he's been fighting at around 198-200 for the last three years.

190 will not be easy for him. It may not even be possible.

This info is very easy to find online.

- -Hence Makabu statement at the WBC convention where he and Canelo gleefully posed in a joyful convention photo op, "There will be no catchweight for this fight."

Makabu currently 34 to Canelo 31 years of age with Canelo double the fights and rounds. So, you saying the WBC gonna kill this fight for their prized icon?

Not yet at any rate. Stay tuned I'd guess.

Yep.

No catchweight, just an absurd new division.

Another benefit is that Wilder might be able to become champion again, at BW.

Of course, Usyk will have something to say about that, but clearly these are the two huge reasons the WBC decided to shit all over the boxing record books.

Just read on Wiki that Wilder isn't interested in fighting at that weight.

Deontay Wilder, who has fought within the bridgerweight limits for much of his career, said that he was not interested in fighting at the weight

Well, yeah, of course he's saying that now. He still has dreams of AJ beating Usyk, and then him fighting AJ for the titles.

And if there's anything we've learned in the past few years, it's to believe everything that comes out of Wilder's mouth. :haha:

- -Well, he had a point when he started spitting up Fury's eggweights, but damned if he didn't swallow the evidence again.

Canelo's ego seems to be that he will one day win the Heavyweight title. I wouldn't rule out him winning a version of the WBA belt - where everyone gets to win a belt. But, his fantasy that he can compete with Anthony Joshua...is just that - fantasy!

At Cruiserweight: Arsen Goulamirian and Ryad Merhy seem to be WBA holders. Goulamirian has stopped Merhy and been declared 'Super', which is nonsensical. Canelo would be challenging nobodies, in the scheme of things.

Lawrence Okolie, holds the WBO, he's ungainly and untested. But 6'5. Too much unknown risk. If Saul wins, boxing fans will say that Lawrence just wasn't that good.

Ilunga Makabu, is only 6 foot but technically solid. Has power but seems older than his listed 34-years-old. He'd certainly represent a big challenge for Canelo. But, he could well be ripe for the picking and that's why he's been picked.

Mairis Briedis is the main man in the division. He's 'knocking on' and deserves this kind of payday. He's powerful and technically great. 6'1 in height. He's the man that Canelo needs to beat, to be No.1 in the division.

The Cruiser rankings seem a bit light, so Saul is picking the right time to make a raid.

Except none of these guys are going to be in the CW division any longer, probably including Makabu. How are they going to make 190 lbs?

The WBC can suck my balls.

Haven't looked into the subject lately, but the other organisations don't seem to be following the WBC's moves. No Cruiserweight change by WBO, IBF and WBA. None have announced Bridgerweight, though the WBA probably will.

Good point.

- But then Canelo won't be fighting them for those belts.

--- Cable, email me when the Canelo/Makabu contract is signed with details allocated, because otherwise, you have nothing but rumor and hearsay. The WBC held their annual convention and nothing about the cruiser division changed.

Oh, that Mauricio, spreading his rumors and hearsay !

- -Sorry, Cable, BN24 just a bunch of nasty knitting needle granny gossips who couldn't dent a bag of popcorn, but they could stab it good and dead.

How about a fellow who's 2nd cousin of Mauricio whose married to the sister of my next door neighbor's baby sitter who heard it through some moms walking their baby strollers through the neighborhood?

That's the gold standard.

  • 1 month later...

--- Maka has to get through Mchunu in a Congo vs South Africa classic if he wants the Canelo fight, and in Podunk, Ohio no less!

Coming for boxing fans this coming Saturday as we near the end of January. Will 90+ DKing even make it to the scratch line?

Stay tuned for the results.

Last chance / last gasp for the once-great Mchunu, but I fear his heart isn't in it any longer. This will probably be a repeat of their first fight, but with superior-skilled Mchunu gassing earlier.

I'd LOVE to be wrong this time, but don't bet on it.

Well, Mchunu just boxed the shorts off of Makabu, clearly winning 10, maybe 11 rounds. (Maybe even all 12.)

But no worries ! The judges gave it to Makabu, of course!

Don't wanna' upset that cash-cow apple cart. (And you wouldn't want Canelo to have to face someone as skilled as Mchunu. Heavens, no! )

- - Did Mchunu even throw a punch?

Actually he had one brief moment @end of the 3rd where he caught Maka coming in and knocked him off balance into the ropes with no follow up.

Otherwise he posed well in a boxing stance doing as little as possible.

???????

You've officially turned into a casual.

Maka kept his hands moving, but only landed flush maybe 3-4 times for the entire fight.

- Which of course is the standard way of giving judges an excuse to throw the fight in your favor.

Mchunu fought brilliantly, and landed a ton, but of course he's never had good power.

I think he was way too cautious, given the obviously pre-ordained outcome if he didn't get a KO.
