Has Jarrell Miller earned a shot at Anthony Joshua or could Fres Oquendo be his next fight?

One of America’s most outspoken heavyweights, Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, made short work of former two-division champion Tomasz Adamek on Saturday night inside of the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois. Miller, 30, was simply too strong and powerful for the former light-heavyweight/cruiserweight belt-holder, as he stormed his way towards a convincing second round TKO victory.

Miller hasn;t fought anyone resembling a world class fighter or indeed anyone who had the slightest chance of beating him.

Re: Has Jarrell Miller earned a shot at Anthony Joshua?

No but since Joshua doesn't have anyone to face in April to unify the division, Miller is the next best contender since Joshua hasn't already beaten him and he can sell a fight well, is undefeated and is working with Matchroom.

It's the easiest fight to make for April which doesn't involve a AJ fighting a man he's already beaten so I say Miller next and then after that if he still can't get the WBC champ then rematch Whyte. (I say "if he still can't" but I'm unsure as to who's to blame for the fight not happening this year or next April)

Just looking at Boxrec's top 25 heavyweights. Not many options out there who would satisfy his next PPV with the likes of Wilder/Fury tied up. I agree Miller would be the obvious choice for his next fight.

1 Anthony Joshua 22-0

2 Deontay Wilder 40-0

3 Alexander Povetkin (Already fought) 34-2

4 Jarrell Miller 22-0-1

5 Tyson Fury 27-0

6 Dillian Whyte (Already fought) 24-1

7 Luis Ortiz 29-1

8 Dominic Breazeale (Already fought) 19-1

9 Adam Kownacki 18-0

10 Joseph Parker (Already fought) 24-2

11 Dereck Chisora 29-8

12 Bryant Jennings 24-2

13 Christian Hammer 23-5-0

14 Marco Huck 41-5-1

15 Charles Martin (Already fought) 25-2-1

16 Filip Hrgovic 6-0

17 Robert Helenius 28-2

18 Andy Ruiz Jr 31-1

19 Agit Kabayel 18-0

20 Sergey Kuzmin 13-0

21 Hughie Fury* 21-1

22 Junlong Zhang 19-0

23 Tom Schwarz 22-0

24 Otto Wallin 20-0

2 Tomasz Adamek 53-6

Re: Has Jarrell Miller earned a shot at Anthony Joshua?

The real question is, what the heck has no-talent Miller done to deserve a #4 ranking?

It's beyond ridiculous.

the only upside is, we get to see AJ completely humiliate him, possibly for 12, painful rounds due to Miller's titanium chin.

Re: Has Jarrell Miller earned a shot at Anthony Joshua?

How the fuck would Wilder or Fury be classed as "tied up" for an April fight? Do they need 12 months between fights or something??

The merry go round will continue won't it.

I don't mind the Miller fight for AJ. As has been mentioned, what else is there for him out there? Ortiz maybe, but that's a dangerous one Eddie might not want the risk.

The division is piss poor!! Joshua went from novice prospect to The King when he went in and smashed Klitschko, and suddenly when people was saying he wasn't ready for the top challenges, apart from Wilder, everyone else is useless.

The division needs a shake up and new talent to come through. And Joshua and Wilder (should he beat Fury) needs to be made sooner rather than later for the good their careers and the sport as a whole.

No doubt they'll be a rematch clause Ton if Fury wins, that's what I was thinking should Fury win or there is some sort of controversial ending. And they'll class it as a hard fight and want an easier challenge next rather than AJ.

Didn't think about rematches! Fair point there.

Agreed, but IMO, an I've said this before:

The governing bodies need to re-think how they rank fighters.

IMO it's absurd to have a guy in the top ten, if he's already lost once or twice, just because he's been around a long time and lost to top guys in the division.

Why not rank younger, undefeated fighters who look fantastic? Current guys like Franklin, Warren, Teslenko, Milas, Bakole, etc?

Ring Magazine currently has Povetkin & Parker at #5, & 6. - With two losses each. RIdiculous. Any of the prospects I listed above would likely beat these guys, and both on the same night.

But if course, we KNOW why they rank the way they do: To make sure there are always easy fights for their protected, "elite" fighters.

--- Miller would not beat Povetkin or Parker and would have his hands full against Whyte.

That's not the question though. Joshua has already beaten the three above, and regardless whether Miller wouldn't beat them, he has worked his way up the rankings and is an unbeaten contender, so should be seen as a "worthy" opponent for Joshua.

I've made a point previously on the governing bodies rankings, and you touch on it here.

I think they take their own punts on prospects they see talent in and give them a leg up the rankings if they think they will come good eventually. The alphabets won't want too many of the same names on theirs lists that appear on others as it could cause some potential clash with mandatories title defenses of the other orgs championships.

Essentially they have their own little micro-ecosystem going. trying to find the next big prospect to rank before the other organisations take not in ranking them too, in the hope that that guy will become the next global star, while holding THEIR title.

That's an interesting point. At the same time, if the WBA ranks some 15-fight prospect at #20, what's to stop the WBO from ranking that same fighter at #12, thus hopefully getting him an "elimination" type fight sooner?

Maybe THAT'S how guys like Miller get to #4 on some lists.

This is exactly my point. Otherwise their lists would or should be universally quite similar in theory, the descrepencies between their rankings are too different to be based on pure logic of "right, who has the best record / most talent for us to rank....".

The question is has he earned a shot. It's a simple "no". It'll be marketable because he's got a big mouth but he's not beaten anyone of any repute to earn his shot.

See also: every beltholder and contender of the past decade, though Fury arguably earned his chance.

That's a fair enough arguement and you are right, the answer to the question without any context is indeed no! He's beaten nobody.

......but if we look at reality and add some context and decide which fighters to get Joshua in the ring with based on those who are RANKED (top 10) by the ABCS and other such recognised systems.....

I have no idea who Kownacki is tbh.

Pulev is ranked only by the IBF and has Fury on his hands soon who incidentally is also only ranked by the IBF.

Parker, Povetkin, Breazeale and Whyte are the other mainstays who make up a rnaking in 5+ of the ranks but all been beaten by AJ.

Even fucking Chisora is seemingly ranked by 5 of the above but who really thinks Chisora is a legit contender for a shot?

Given Ortiz is coming off the back of a loss and there's talk of him vs Whyte being made, plus the fight he presents quite a risk, that's an unrealistic.

Miller is seemingly the "best" option, even if he doesn't reallt deserve it? But there's only Wilder who really deserves a shot at AJ right now in the heavyweight landscape, and Fury is hoping to scupper and take that chance.

That's right.

As long as we've no clearly defined explanation of what "earned his shot" means then you could argue it both ways since who did Wilder beat before he "earned his shot" vs Stiverne? Sure he had a lot of fights but he was knocking over tin cans and then bam, a world title shot and it's not just Wilder either, remember when Horn fought Pacquiao, Horn was 16-0 I think but if I pulled up his boxrec right now I'm telling you there won't be any top 10 (even 15 probably) ranked fighters on that list.

Sure you do, he's the guy who beat Charles Martin the other week in a ten rounder. I can't remember who's undercard it was on now but it was a UD for Kownacki. He's undefeated but before that I didn't know who he was either, I only tuned in to see the return of the Prince

Don;t get me wrong. I'd quite like to see a Joshua-Miller contest if only to see if the ring collapses when Miller hits the canvas.

:haha:

I think this thread just shows up how piss poor the heavyweight division is, and has been for years!!
