A good read guys. Dr Mike Loosemore MBE (British Olympic Boxing team doctor) explains the risks.

Fighters are risking their lives making weight and Dr Mike Loosemore MBE explains why

On 10 November 2017, 18-year-old Australian fighter Jessica Lindsay wrote “weight cutting is sick” on her Instagram page while preparing for a Muay Thai fight.

Six days later, she died of extreme dehydration, having collapsed while out running, 30 minutes before she was due to weigh in. Her organs, her sister said, had shut down “one by one”.

Re: Boxers risk their life's losing weight

--- The various orgs and commishes could solve the problem with automatic promotion to the next division at the first missed weighin for both prefight and fight.

Wouldnt solve completely, but overall the health benefits would improve immensely. Unfortunately, boxing run by greedy lowbrows and too many trainers and managers equally at fault in looking out for their fighters.

Re: Boxers risk their lives losing weight

The only solution I see is to have series of weigh-ins with the first one being conducted at least few weeks before the fight. If you're above the limit then, you're out. Of course, it wouldn't happen, because most of the fights aren't even announced few weeks earlier, but this would prevent extreme weight cutting to me.

I'm stunned that a doctor, writing that article, din't mention the dangers of low cerebral fluid. - Easily the most serious danger of all.

As for "fixing" the problem, fairly effective solutions are easy. - But nobody wants to do it.

Same as it ever was .....
