LondonRingRules
--- Cryptic, unattributed article on fightnews promoting betting on boxing. We all knew it was going on thru illicit sources, but given the already shady officiating and oversight in boxing, I can't help but feel the sport slipping a few more notches. Thoughts? gavpowell
Re: Sports Betting Legalized in US The states have to individually legalise it though don't they? And a lot of Americans have historically been in favour of keeping the ban, so perhaps little will change?
The_budweiser
Re: Sports Betting Legalized in US Would be a big earner for your country in tax, money that could be used to fund free health care, but it will no doubt be used for war and other things. Has there been any opposition from Casinos? @Gav I think its crazy each state has its own laws. Imagine that in UK?

Probably because just in the last few hundred years different areas where "owned"/invaded by numerous countries, England, Dutch, French, Spanish and so when they began merging some of the them maintained their laws and such. It's such a vast country, and the people so different from one state to another, laws are probably more effective when made specifically from states to state. Many of them are the size of countries. gavpowell
Re: Sports Betting Legalized in US I thought it was legal in some states and not others? :noidea: Noo, Nevada for sports bets, New Jersey for casinos and a few others for racing, that's it I think, though a lot of states have lotteries that incorporate sports and a lot of them are tantamount to racketeering. Bud - Australia is a federal country as well, though it's not governed in quite the same way as the US. It's difficult for us to comprehend because we're such a small country and America is so huge - I follow US politics to a certain extent, but it gets confusing at election time. There's casinos in more states than just Jersey and Vegas. If i'm not mistaken it's over 20 states.
LondonRingRules
Re: Sports Betting Legalized in US --- Save for Nevada and New Jersey, the other casinos are located on Indian reservations run by Indians. Dont know how many accept sports bets, that's a different scenario than slots and cards and such, but I'd suppose each is hooked into a sports broker for their odds calculation and will take common sports bets, but that's just my rational supposition. Never placed a bet in my life and have no interest in casinos and whores. Used to have a broker on Banter who gave us some insight on how boxing odds are set. Why do these 2 things get linked?? :haha: I am fully aware they can go hand in hand but just because someone goes to a casino doesn't mean they take a whore to the room for the night as well. You can do one without the other Bobby :haha: I like placing small bets on sport events. I can make pretty mundane event or one that you would otherwise not care about become a bit more interesting. Football for me mostly. Boxing isn't bad but mostly the odds are so stacked because the majority of fights tend to be "name" vs cannon fodder. So the bigger odds are on specific rounds the bout will end.

LondonRingRules
Re: Sports Betting Legalized in US --- Ton, do you go to a casino to place your small bets? I doubt it. Kid I used to work with had a gambling problem. His bookie started calling him at work were he was placing most of the bets and he ended up fired. My point about casinos and whores still stands, but we could expand to include hotels and motels, esp if they have a bar inside or within easy walking distance. My point about casinos and whores still stands, but we could expand to include hotels and motels, esp if they have a bar inside or within easy walking distance. I place my bets online, its quick, simple and easy. Online gambling is huge here in the UK. So big infact that a good 50% or more of the adverts I see (I do mostly watch sports) on the TV are for the big name bookmaker companies. These companies also sponser most of the football teams in the top 2-3 leagues meaning their company name is on the front of the football jerseys the players & fans wear. Dying high streets are littered with charity shops & bookie shops while every other kind of high street outlet goes out of business. This allows the non-technology folk to go into and place their bets in the traditional way. These shops also have fixed odds gambling machines (electronic routlette) which have been described as the crack cocaine of gambling, responsible for feeding bookmakers millions of pounds and bankrupting those stupid fuckers that can't control their gambling habits. A law has been passed just today to bring down the maximum bet per turn from £100 a spin, to £2 a spin, which has pissed off the bookmakers, who are screaming that this will cause many of their branches to operate at a loss Gambling can bring a bit of enjoyment and profit from a sporting event if it's done sensibly and you only gamble wjat you can afford to lose.... Unfortunately greed and the thrill of a win causes many people to become addicted and reckless with it... The bookmakers could be deemed as evil for enticing and feeding off these people, but at the same time they also offer the possibility of people to become rich at their expense. That's all part of the game.

And the "bookie" was more of a racketeer / loan shark in this instance?? Slightly different vibe to me quickly putting a £2 bet on a boxing match on my computer at work. I won't be fired, it's not illegal, or seedy.:haha:
