Rio Ferdinand: Former footballer refused professional boxing licence

Recommended Posts

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand says he is "disappointed" after being refused a professional boxing licence.

The 39-year-old, who retired from football in 2015, launched his new career in September.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) said they would not be reviewing his application, Ferdinand said.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves," he said.

In his statement, published on Facebook, Ferdinand added: "To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take."

How bad could he have been? They gave Flintoff a licence and he was shockingly bad.

--- this is the BBbc, so they don't have to justify any decision, bonehead or not.

Surely, Ferdinand had a legal case as they didn't even give him a chance to demonstrate his ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment?

I would think he might have a case for age based discrimination. Maybe they were just leary of him turning pro at an advanced age, but they still should have given him some consideration.

--- Apparently boxing still retains some allure among athletes, hence American BB and football players sometimes turn pro like Gerald Washington and Dom Breazeale.

Speaking of, who would among notable boxers be the best footie players? I know Ali challenger Karl mildenberger was promoted by abc back in the day as a southpaw pro soccer player.
