Should all boxers wear headgear including pros?

After another death in boxing recently when Mike Towell lost his life, I was left asking myself should all boxers wear headgear? Do padded gloves provide enough protection to a fighter’s health?

We see boxers suffer from a variety of issues like concussions, coma, slurred speech and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (brain trauma only discovered in an autopsy).

There is an argument that boxing head gear causes problems as it can affect your vision and adds additional weight onto the neck and head.

Boxers shouldn’t enter the ring fearing their life’s but I am worried we aren’t doing all we can to protect them. They get a medical once a year, however I believe they should be given a once over by a doctor on the day of the fight. Towell’s partner said he suffered from headaches leading up to the fight and one question from the doctor on the day may have saved his life.

What can we do to improve fighter's safety? are we doing enough?

But then all he'd have to do is say "No, I've been fine."

Perhaps heagear would help, I've no idea, but basically it's a risk you take willingly aand it's never going to be safe because nothing is. Nobody's implemented manadtory headgear for footballers or rugby players, for example.

In football and rugby players can wear head gear (they may need permission in football). I wonder how many boxers would wear it, if it was optional? It would certainly be beneficial to journeymen who fight a lot and take a lot of shots.

Mike Towell headaches would have set off ‘alarm bells’ for doctors

One of the top doctors in British boxing has said the fighter Mike Towell, who died on Friday, would have been asked if he had been experiencing headaches before his final bout.

The 25-year-old, who was from Dundee, was taken to hospital after he was knocked down twice in a fight on Thursday. He died the next day. His partner, Chloe Ross, said he had been suffering migraines for weeks which he had put down to pre-fight stress.

Dr Louise Eccles, the Chief Medical Officer of the British and Irish Boxing Association, said all boxers are asked about headaches in their pre-fight medicals. She said any mention of migraines would have “set alarm bells ringing in any doctor’s mind”, and he would have been sent for further assessment.

The boxer's management team have said they were not aware he was experiencing headaches before the fight.
