R.I.P Mike Towell

MIke Towell passed away 1am last night after suffering a bleed to the brain.

I saw Mike fight a few years ago and I tipped him in the prospect thread - he reminded me of Hatton that night as he was a pressure fighter who didn't give you a seconds peach.

Sad news for Scottish boxing and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

RIP Mike

Re: R.I.P Mike Towell

Terrible news, although "He had been complaining of headaches for the last few weeks but we put it down to migraines with the stress of his fight" - I wonder if that's coincidence? I know I'm a hypochondriac but I cannot understand why anyone wouldn't get that checked out to be on the safe side.

Hopefully this leads to even more caution before fights - the sport's too risky to take anything for granted.

Oh fuck...fuck this, now my point about not letting boxers with bad blood fight becomes more valid. Even though it may not have been the main reason for his death, those fights get too personal and too intense, too violent. You can't have a mid-tempo fight with two guys who are out to take eachother's head off.

Tragic ending. 3rd death in a British ring in 20 years. Sad for all those involved. Rest in Peace, Mike.

This statistic is rather incredible considering the nature of the sport, to punch your foe in the head repeatedly!

Obviously, for the very few and their loved ones it's a tragedy, but no man ever got into the ring without knowing the risks or unwillingly at the end of the day.

Re: R.I.P Mike Towell

He was down in the first round and then in the fifth, last. He did take some punishment.

First knockdown seems to be on the top of or side of the head. He came back strong in the next round. I guess the ref could've stopped it after the knockdown in the 5th, but i'm not gonna question that judgement. The video i watch was posted by selij, and you can see him clearly lose his footing while getting lifted up. That leg movement made you know something bad occurred. Of course i already knew the outcome while watching the fight. Very sad to hear. Condolences to his family and friends.

Nice to see boxing pulling together to help Mike Towell's family. So far Ricky Hatton's just giving campaign has raised £42,660 and donations are still coming in.

Eddie Hearn has also chipped in and all the money made from remaining ticket sales to Ricky Burns' world title defence in Glasgow will be donated to the family of boxer Mike Towell.
