Undefeated WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders begins his reign with the opening defence of his title on Saturday 22 October at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Saunders, 23-0 12 KO’s, joins a sensational five-title fight card that features Welsh hero Liam Williams defending his British Super-Welterweight title against undefeated Londoner Ahmet Patterson; Penge star Bradley Skeete making a mandatory defence of his British Welterweight crown against Manchester’s Shayne Singleton; Baggies bomber Tommy Langford challenging for the Vacant British Middleweight strap and Liverpool’s Tom Stalker making the first defence of his WBO European Lightweight title against Welshman Craig Evans.

An opponent will be announced this week.

I should be thrilled that a World champion has been added to a card in my hometown....but I'm not. He's a decent fighter but talks more than he fights. Doubt his opponent will be any great shakes.

Are you going to the fight Rob or working? I don't think his opponent will be up to much either.

Re: Billy Joe Saunders isn't retired after all

Saunders needs to seriously get on with his boxing career, because, right now he's becoming a non-entity and fighting someone I bet boxing fans have never heard of wont help.

Agreed, but the problem is, he's just not good enough. He's boxing's version of the Peter Principle, having finally reached his level of incompetence. Who the heck can he fight, in the top ten, with any serious chance of winning? - Other than boring rematches with Lee or Eubank.)

Maybe he could borrow some milkshakes from Canelo, go down to 154 and... no wait, he gets destroyed there as well.

WBO Rankings

1. Avtandil Khurtsidze

2. Tommy Langford

3. Ryota Murata

4. David Lemieux

5. Max Bursak

6. Hassam N’Dam N’Jikam

7. Rob Brant

8. Maciej Sulecki

9. Chris Eubank Jr.

10. Gabriel Rosado

Boxrec top 10

1 Gennady Golovkin

2 Daniel Jacobs

3 Chris Eubank Jr

4 David Lemieux

5 Billy Joe Saunders

6 Andy Lee

7 Peter Quillin

8 Maciej Sulecki

9 Willie Monroe Jr

10 Dominic Wade

I don't think its as bleak as you are suggesting Cable. He has already beaten WBO ranked Andy Lee (15th WBO, Boxrec 6th) - defeating Lee was a very good win and not an easy task. He has beaten Eubank Jr (WBO 9th, Boxrec 3rd) - Again, a very good win and another top 10.

I think Saunders stands a good chance with many of the names on the above lists.

Re: Billy Joe Saunders isn't retired after all

Well, it's official, folks. Billy Joe will be facing an opponent he has ACTIVELY been trying to get into the ring for a while now:

The fearsome, the devastating, ARTUR AKAVOV !

Literally, this is the guy he wanted.

The WBO is actually OK with this. Well, it's better than Yoann Bloyer, at least. Who knows, maybe Akarov will surprise us. But jeez ......

BJS almost making Canelo look good by comparison.

Obviously, team Saunders thinks this guy will be an easy win, and for obvious reasons.

However, Akavov has a few fights on YouTube, and he doesn't completely suck at all. He seems to have decent balance, good footwork, and very fast hands.

Of course, he's been fighting cans, so...

Experience-wise, he's totally out of his depth in the fight, but an upset isn't out of the question.

One can dream .......

Re: Billy Joe Saunders isn't retired after all

I'm just praying for the upset.

BJS is not good for the sport of boxing, and Akavov, while massively inexperienced and evidently somewhat light-fisted, has that Eastern Euro "I will kill you if you don't kill me first" look about him.

(Also, while Akavov only has 7 KO's in his 16 pro bouts, they have all happened in his last 8 fights. This COULD be a case of a talented fight switching trainers, or a solid amateur who took a while to get used to the pro style.

Agreed 100% he's bad for boxing in just about every way you can be. He's racist, sexist, homophobic, abusive, bullying and ignorant. So that's the personality side of him, role model etc etc

He doesn't live the life either, gets fat between every fight and is proud of it. Bad role model again.

He clearly ducks better fighters, he shows no guts or heart and is clearly only in it for the pay day which is fine if you at least admit it.

Then his boxing style doesn't exactly make up for his disgusting personality. He is one of them fighters who doesn't give a monkey's about looking good, he will do anything to win and often if is by completely trying to ruin the fight and make it boring. Again, if this is what he wants to do then that's fine but just admit it and also don't complain when nobody wants to pay to watch you..

Sorry about that rant but it's been building up lol

Re: Billy Joe Saunders isn't retired after all

Fights off due to injury.

------

Queensberry Promotions received news today that WBO World Middleweight Champion, Billy Joe Saunders had suffered a muscle injury and would be unable to defend against Artur Akavov on 22nd October at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena. Unfortunately, on the same day British Super-Welterweight Champion, Liam Williams also suffered an injury in sparring that prevents him from defending his British title against Ahmet Patterson on the same bill.

Consequently, postponement was the only option to maintain the strength of the card, and as such the event will now take place on Saturday 26th November at the same venue.
