Tommy Martin aims to return to ring after bleed on brain Tommy Martin is confident he will be given the green light to continue boxing despite revealing he suffered a bleed on the brain after his last fight. Martin is waiting to get the thumbs up from the British Boxing Board of Control to carry on fighting, with the aim of being back in the ring at the end of the month. The 22-year-old St Neots puncher has not fought since he suffered his first defeat as a professional to John Wayne Hibbert in their duel for the Commonwealth and WBC light-welterweight titles in January. Martin (pictured) was stopped in the 12th and final round of their clash at London's Copper Box Arena, but he had been pencilled in to make a comeback in Leeds in July only to pull out two weeks prior to the bout with a "niggling injury." But he has now admitted his prolonged absence from action was due to the brain injury sustained as a result of the Hibbert contest. "I fainted after the Hibbert fight and they rushed me straight to hospital that night and a couple of weeks later I was getting little headaches," Martin told IFL.TV. "I went into the gym to try to do a bit of shadow boxing and I wasn't feeling right. "Barry (Smith), my coach, said 'I'm taking you straight to hospital now and I didn't come out for a week, so it was a bit of a nightmare. "They found a bleed on my brain and then I was in and out of hospital for two months." Martin said he had undergone several scans to assess the damage and is now desperate to fight on. He said: "The Board are studying it and they've sent all my scans off to their doctors and neurologists and they're hopefully going to give me the all-clear and then I'll be back in at the end of September. "I apologise to my mum and my family for putting them through all this stress, but boxing is all I know and I've got so many people I feel I need to keep happy. "My sponsors have been looking after me. They've been unbelievable and they understand everything, but at the same time I just want to get back in there and prove to them and myself that I deserve to be at that level." The_budweiser
Re: Tommy Martin aims to return to ring after bleed on brain WOW, surprised at this news. If I was Tommy I would quit as health is more important than money and fame.
JrGooNer
Re: Tommy Martin aims to return to ring after bleed on brain Shocking. I think he must just feel he needs to make some more money from fighting before retiring because a lot of fighters would retire after that. Nick Blackwell wasn't told he had to retire I don't think but he said he just couldn't put his family through anything like that ever again which I completely get and agree with. I think Tommy Martin should stop and try to start training fighters if he doesn't want to leave the game but your health is too valuable to risk like that. In my opinion.
