Goldenboy launch PPV website in time for Canelo vs Smith

On Mexican Independence Weekend, Golden Boy Promotions will offer the world championship battle between heavy punchers, former two-division world champion Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) and WBO Junior Middleweight World Champion, Liam “Beffy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs), on online pay-per-view via new site, Canelo vs. Smith - Official Pay Per View. Live from the home of the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, Canelo vs. Smith - Official Pay Per View will allow fans the opportunity to watch this mega-fight on the device of their choice on September 17. This online offering is designed to reach those consumers who don’t have access to the HBO Pay-Per-View telecast that’s available through cable TV, satellite and telco pay-per-view providers.

“Our premium platform is designed with the boxing fan in mind and will provide fans a deep immersive pre-fight video experience featuring exclusive behind the scenes programming from training camp throughout fight week,” said Oscar De La Hoya Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Our goal is to give fans access beyond the ring in a way that enriches their on-line viewing experience throughout fight night. ” Goldenboyppv.com is one of many new platforms Golden Boy Promotions has launched over the past 12 months.

Re: Is this a sign of things to come?...

VIP Promotions have a website in UK but they show free fights and show their upcoming fighters for free. Shame on Golden Boy trying to make a quick buck.

Well Golden Boy has been doing those GB Live / Ring TV Live cards, which they upload to their youtube channel. Most of the fighters on this Canelo PPV were featured on there for the last 18 months. Diego De La Hoya, Joseph Diaz, etc.

Re: Is this a sign of things to come?...

It begs the question: Will GBP be severing all ties with HBO in the future?

After all, unless the GBP service costs MORE than the HBO service (not likely) this will probably steal a lot of customers from HBO. HBO isn't going to like that.

Maybe the two companies have a deal, where the revenue is shared equally? - But then neither side has a strong motive to spend money & effort on the pre-shows, the quality of the production, etc. Why not just let "the other guy" do it?

It's very strange.

The one positive outcome I can envision is, if every major promotional company does the same thing, then Showtime and HBO could disappear from boxing completely. That might end some of the ridiculous stalemates that have in the past prevented great fights from happening. - Or it could make things even worse. I don't even feel like thinking on it. :noidea:

Seems like a smart move, they could offer the PPV's for cheaper and also have better access to the overseas audience.

I don't think they can offer it for less. That would obviously destroy HBO's sales. Having different access, though, is a very interesting concept.

I'm surprised this has taken this long to be honest. I remember ESPN doing an online PPV with Shane Mosley and Margarito-Cintron a long time ago - thought that was the beginning of PPV online distribution of fights, at least beyond domestic markets. Will be interesting to see how this alters the relationship between GBP and HBO although I've got a feeling not a great deal will change apart from some added leverage for GBP in negotiations.

While the elimination of TV companies and thus that political farce, is a good thing it would probably lead to other issues in the long run.

Cross promotions, who has the exclusive online stream rights etc?

It could also cause a monopoly whereby only the very top promotors have the pull and power to pull off the whole thing.....

I thought we may have progressed further with online sport streams, especially since a few years back now England broadcast an International match (possibly a qualifier) via paid stream only. Not sure if it was free or a paid one.

.

I might be wrong, but my impression is that the networks are rarely the problem in modern boxing - the fighters and their promoters are the biggest pains in the arse. After all, neither HBO nor Showtime were responsible for Ward/Kovalev or Mayweather/Pacquiao getting stalled.

Oh for sure there are bigger problems within boxing other than Networks, but they do represent an aspect of that. Promotions being aligned with specific Networks for instance, but you're quite right they are only a part of the wider problem.
