What would be the bigger upset?

Lets say for talks sake that Brook defeats Golovkin and Smith defeats Canelo Alvarez - Which in your eyes would be the bigger upset?

I am going to pick Smith as Canelo has been at that level for a number of years and has a greater experience and has a C.V that Smith can only dream about.

It's a tough decision as Kell Brook is stepping up 2 weight levels to fight a phenomenon fighter in GGG.

Whilst I don't think it's a foregone conclusion I do think Brook winning would be a bigger upset. Stepping up two weight classes against a punishing middleweight who many have top 5 P4P and who hasn't shown a great deal of vulnerability vs a fighter from the same weight class who, whilst arguably the best in the division has struggled against some opponents (Lara) and has clear deficits that have the potential to be exploited (less than stellar foot speed, not a natural at cutting off the ring).

Re: What would be the bigger upset?

Smith defeating Canelo would definitely be the bigger upset by a country mile. He hasnt got a hope in hell. Smith wouldnt beat Canelo if Saul had one hand tied behind his back.

Whereas Kell is a "big" WW and looks good at this new weight and on a boxing skills level isn't a million miles away from GGG. I will be rooting for Kell and wouldn't be surprised if he pulled it off. However Smith cannot even be compared to Canelo on any level, either defensively or offensively.

This.

The two match-ups are in no way comparable:

Golovkin-Brook is a decent compromise fight, the very best that could be made at the time for both parties. Golovkin is a small MW, and Brook is large even if by SWW standards. Additionally, Brook is widely regarded as the best WW currently in the sport, with solid skills and excellent power.

Canelo-Smith is a farcical mismatch, specifically sought after & engineered by team Vaginavez, when several MUCH much better fights could have been made.

Smith will be lucky to get out alive.

Canelo has become a bigger laughing stock than Broner, and that's some trick.

Re: What would be the bigger upset?

--- What is G, a 12-1 favorite?

Haven't heard much about Canelo odds, but in the initial launch presser Smith looked200lb and no fat. Canelo fights at 170+, so how about Smith? Size matters enough to present strength and logistical difficulties and nobody really knows Smith potential. We know Brook from 12 dreary years. Had he real talent and drive he would've been champ 8 years ago. Thus I think this his cash out. Smith is still hungry and dangerous fighting in the lion den, a bigger upset.

Alvarez 12-1 or 2-17

GGG 1-7

According to oddschecker

Re: What would be the bigger upset?

In reality Smith would be bigger, but I think Brook's win would shock the world more. Alvarez already has a history of close bouts (Trout, Lara, even Cotto) and Golovkin is expected to win everything easily.

I agree. Smith would be bigger and Brook would shock the world more.

Smith hasn't fought anywhere near the level Canelo has. Through in the fact Smith is fighting away from home and has never fought outside of UK as a fighter. If I had to pick it would be SMITH.

Good point. If both underdogs were to somehow win, I think most fans would say that Brook stunned the world by beating the best (and want an immediate rematch) whereas Canelo was simply exposed for the (partial) hype-job he is.

I'm struggling with an answer, to the original question. I did watch the Boxtalk guys and they expressed plenty of views. One that hit home is that a loss for GGG would ruin his legacy. If GGG loses to Brook he's screwed unless Kell goes on defeating every man and beast out there. Canelo's team can say that he's young and Smith shocked them.

I think the biggest unknown is how good Liam Smith is. I don't know and that's due to matchmaking. The other three I know how good they are (Or think I do).

Re: What would be the bigger upset?

Brook defeating GGG would be a huge surprise. But things happens in boxing. I remember Kostya Tszyu entering the ring as unbeatable as GGG is, and then Vince Phillips came into the ring too...

Smith defeating Canelo is almost imposible.

Re: What would be the bigger upset?

I think the best upset will be canelo losing with Smith. Smith is a good fighter and probably he can shock the world on saturday

It didn't happen this time but Canelo is ripe for the picking, they're obviously trying to put as many fights between now and it's happening.

--- Dave, Canelo #1 p4p boxrec and in Ring/espn P4p and only just turned 26.

OK, we get you don't like Canelo. Just don't bet the farm against him.
