The_budweiser
Luke Campbell MBE will defend his WBC Silver Lightweight title against Derry Mathews at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on October 15, live on Sky Sports. Campbell landed the belt against Argenis Mendez in his last outing in Leeds in July, and the Hull star will be looking to cement his position as a World title contender with a win over Mathews. The 2012 Olympic gold medal hero is looking for a third win on the bounce as he targets World honours in 2017, and the 28 year old is excited by the prospect of facing a hostile crowd in Merseyside. “This is exactly the kind of fight I have been looking for and doing it in his back yard is even more exciting,” said Campbell. “I feel like I am starting to reach the peak of my professional career and Derry has some great wins on his record, I’m expecting it to be my toughest fight yet. http://www.ringnews24.com/2016/08/23/campbell-meets-mathews-british-lightweight-battle/#.V7ymMjUcYmI
gavpowell
Re: Can Campbell win against Mathews in Liverpool? Can he? He'd better if he has any hope of being taken seriously. Matthews is something of a resurrection man it's true, but it's not like he's ever been anything more than a very solid British-level fighter. Now he's old into the bargain, so he should be nothing more than a notch on the belt of an up and coming fighter. Anyone with pretensions of world class should destroy him, and Campbell has shown flashes of brilliance amid the frustratingly amateur style. Cableaddict
Re: Can Campbell win against Mathews in Liverpool? Campbell has pretty good power, (not quite as good as his record would suggest, but good enough) and Mathews has a shaky chin, so.... yeah. If it goes to the cards, then who knows? But there's an awful lot of juice behind Campbell, and Mathews is pretty much old news at this point, so I can't see anything being rigged in his favor. repsac
Re: Can Campbell win against Mathews in Liverpool? Campbell should win. But i feel he probably needs to get a stoppage to gain any praise for beating Matthews at this point.

Sorry but it's Mathews :mlol: Don't worry his own promoter sends out press releases using Matthews and not Mathews. I'm not convinced Campbell has what it takes. Mathews will be a tough test and I have a sneaky feeling Mathews might surprise a few and win. I think this is a good match-up and if Campbell can win, he would have learned a lot fighting Mathews while being in the lions den. I'm looking forward to this fight. Will you watch it Gav? gavpowell
Re: Can Campbell win against Mathews in Liverpool? Sorry but it's Mathews So it is - I never knew that, and in fact have never seen anyone spell Matthews with one T. Weird. I might watch it if I'm bored that night, but Campbell is maddening to watch, to be honest.

I wuz about to reply, "but the famous clamp manufacturer is spelled "Mathews." - Except I just checked, and it isn't. I never noticed that extra "t." Funny how our brains work. This may be because you're American or it may be because I'm one of the least practical people in the universe, but I've never heard of Matthews clamps! That's because the company is called "Matthews Studio Equipment." - But they also make clamps. Really, really good ones.
