Who is the closest fighter ever to being perfect?

I thought this would make a good thread on the forum, so I copy/pasted it from BS (hope that's allowed?).

If you were to build the 'perfect boxer', which fighter in history would be most similar? We are talking attributes here, not achievements! You can mix boxers styles/attributes.

--- Loved BS in the day, but it got to big and spammed with 2 second attention span texting kiddies. That and their computer viruses that finally wrecked my dell. One of the little wretches writes for Ring in spite of having no more than a 3rd grade boxing education.

Close to perfection the original Jack Nonpareil Dempsey, Joe Gans, Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard, Eder Jofre, and yes, Mike Tyson when he had his professional HOF team behind him before Givens and King sank their fangs into him.

It may show a lack of insight on my part, but I'd stick with Ray Robinson - solid power, supreme footwork, excellent hand and footsped, solid chin, good stamina, could throw every punch in the book, bags of heart and successful as hell without giving in to the Mob. What else would you want?

Based on overall technique & athleticism:

Maybe SRR.

Maybe Sweat Pea.

If you include "guts" and "chin" in the equation, it becomes almost impossible, since some of the best fighters rarely had to prove those two attributes.

Also, does the winner have to fight well from both the outside, AND be an excellent in-fighter? That narrows the field by maybe 90% or more.

--- Pea far too many flaws for perfection, not the least clowning instead of fighting, little power, and over reliance on defense instead of developing his offense better like his master willie pep had.

I forgot to add Sal Sanchez to my list. He could do it all in spades with the best.

I dare someone (anyone) to say TBE - he aint bad...

I think it's very hard to think of anyone after about 1980 who deserves to be in contention - I can't personally think of any all-round near-perfect fighter who didn't also have things very much his own way - Roy stayed out of Dariusz's way, Leonard got to fight in two weight divisions on the same night etc.

Floyd sure takes after Robinson in his personal life though ;-)

I guess this is true. I do think he had decent power, though. He just chose not to fully commit a lot of the time, so he seemed more light-fisted than he was. One could say the same thing about the latter part of Floyd's career.

--- Ali had too many flaws to be a perfect boxer, not the least was flashy footwork that wasted energy and extended non scoring offensive maneuvers like his ropadope he also over used.

Joe Louis had more efficient footwork and had he not been so prone to KDs, I'd have picked him as one of my examples. Lennox too prone to one punch ko losses and too often simply failed to successfully engage far less powerful and less talented boxers. I didn't include Robinson because he wasn't the most defensive minded, but then that was more due to the aggressive era he fought in, so I don't mind him being included as a near perfect example.

For me, Marvelous Marvin Hagler. All of his loses, save for Monroe, from what I have read, is highly questionable, never been legitimately knockdown. Never even came close to be severely hurt or wobbled. Dominate in his rematches. And never had to make any ill advised comebacks because he was wise with his money. Also very loyal to those who were with him from the start. Was smart enough not to fall for any con men who would take his money. As close to perfect both in and out of the ring.
