Roc is losing big $ on him and needs a recoup. Who knows, maybe Stevenson made a better offer. Gollum could win that, but he is definitely not keen on getting KOed by Krush. Nobody wanted to go to Oakland and nobody wants to even go to his last prefight presser...only in boxing...

--- Nary a word from Ward or Roc why they were no shows at the kick off presser or to counter rumors that they are now balking at the venue and want a change to Oakland.

 

Always Oakland with Ward who looks to drive down not only the promotion, but the sales and by extension the fight itself if he ever actually shows up. Probably too busy expanding his Imelda Marco shoe collection he's looks more keen for.

If Roc loses money on their best fighter, then involvement in boxing wasn't a good idea for them.

 

 

 

The only reason I don't think this is a purposeful gambit to get out of the fight (after Ward having done 2 warm ups and coming to his senses) is because RNS paid him so much money. They'll never recoup that investment, but they HAVE to make some of that back or else look like total fools. The whole point of signing Ward, and paying him ten times what he was worth, was to gain instant prestige in the sport. They've already flushed a lot of that down the toilet. Losing this fight would probably end them as a company.

 

- Unless they've decided to use the Al Haymon model, and just milk Ward for the rest of his career against no-hopers. - But they'd still suffer an irreparable hit to their prestige, no matter how much they'd try to blame it on Duva.

KATHY DUVA: We are here mostly for you to get a chance to talk to Sergey Kovalev and to get a better sense of where his head is right now leading into the fight we all want to see. Knowing from experience, the most fun anyone in my position could have is to be in the position to announce that the biggest fight of the year that everyone wants to see, between two of the top five pound-for-pound fighters that everyone wants to see, with undefeated records – usually it’s a lot of fun. I do hope that at some point during this promotion it will become fun. I am here to tell you that we are planning to have the fight on November 19 and we expect that the fight will be taking place somewhere, and where that is we will let you know. MICHAEL BUFFER: Ladies and Gentlemen, we have here the fighter that is universally recognized by most as the true, undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world. That is with no disrespect to Adonis Stephenson – the man the fans and most pundits would agree is definitely the most universally recognized light heavyweight champion of the world is Sergey Kovalev, so let me turn the mic over him and we will take questions.

 

SERGEY KOVALEV: Thank you everyone for coming. I am really happy about the fight that is coming up against Andre Ward on November 19th and I am really excited. I am really excited because the two best boxers in the light heavyweight division will fight. It is three months before the fight and I will just take my time and it will happen. I will answer any questions you have.

 

We don’t see two five pound-for-pound fighters fight each other that often – what makes this fight worth the risk for you?

 

SERGEY KOVALEV: This fight for me is dangerous. Any fight is dangerous but this fight is really important for my career and for the boxing world because it is a really high level for both of us. When I was a child I was just dream to be on this level so this fight for me really means a lot. For me this fight means everything in my boxing career and after this fight we will find out who is the best pound-for-pound.

 

Are you disappointed Andre is not here? Was he supposed to be here and why is he not here?

--- The running fouling way Ward will have to use to win hometown results should not be exalted.

 

If Kov wins it will be straight up boxing and power over a guy who clearly started fading 4 yr ago. This feels the last impacted tooth of his career being pulled. He's more interested in his shoe collection than the business of boxing, hence his dumbing down of the promo.

The most anticipated fight for me, i really cant tell you who i see winning, Kovalev with the power and range,, ward with boxing smarts and slickness

 

 

But is Ward still slick? I don't think he's quite as oily as he was back in the super-six. He's looked positively human in his last 2bouts, and those were against cabbies. I think Ward will be lucky to see the final bell. If he loses, it will be interesting to see what Roc Nation will do to keep his career going. He's said himself he can't make SMW any longer.

 

Well, let's talk after the fight. Maybe he can stun the world after all.

--- Son of Who? is still dirty though, and that's what he falls back on when faced with a genuine threat. I'm surprised the Denmark ambassador didn't suspend relations with Washington after butted Kessler into what turned out to be permanent eye damage.

 

 

True dat, and it doesn't age much. - But fighting dirty vs Kovalev is suicide. I don't expect it. Ward will have to be in the shape of his life, and he'll have to fight a perfect fight. Otherwise, I honestly think the fight will resemble Golovkin-Brook.

Even though I'm a huge Kovalev fan, I hope you're right.

So could I, it would certainly mean more money all the way around. Back in the REALLY old days (the Twenties thru the Fifties) two fighters used to do these "three fights scenarios" all the time. Trade off the first two and make it look good or have some conveniently myopic judges, and then the rubber match would be legit. It certainly wouldn't surprise me, both Kovalev and Ward aren't making much, relatively speaking, despite their "zeros".

Ah, you mean like Klitschko & Fury ! :haha:

 

- But for a manufactured Wardvalev trilogy to work, I think Ward would have to win the first fight, and I just don't see Sergey laying off, even a little bit.

 

Then again, it could put an extra 10 mil in his pocket, so you never know.
