Benavidez vs Douglin. Tonight on PBC.

Probably another Al Haymon mismatch, but maybe not.

Benavidez is 15-0 with 14 KO's, against the typical designated-losers, but his last 3 opponents had pretty good records, FWIW. His name sounds familiar, but I can't place it.

Well, it would be great if he's legit. 168 can really use a good kick in the pants right now. (Maybe a future opponent for Golovkin?)

Douglin has probably already been told what round to go down in, but at least he has experienced being taken out by Groves & Charlo. Both of them are miles better than anyone Benavidez has faced. He might make it entertaining for a while.

So what else do we know about these two guys?

looks to me like he has pretty slow hands. Hard to get excited:

Me thinks somebody has been paying for most of those TKO stoppages.

Or maybe he's just got dat natural powah, I dunno....

####### SPOILERS BELOW: ###########

Not a bad fight. Douglin tough as nails, but a little too small, a little too slow.

Benavidez missed a lot of opportunities, but maybe that was due to facing a southpaw, so he was extra careful. Hard to say.

He sure did close the show nicely. Lovely body work & uppercuts. At only 19 y-o, definitely a prospect to keep an eye on.

I was so close to heading to Philly for this card, but i ended up having to work. Strange scene with the top rope giving out, then needing pliers to hold it into place. Ref Rosado was concerned, and ended up grabbing the ropes whenever either of the fighters leaned on them in the last few rounds.

Saw David fight on the Thurman vs Porter undercard. Seems to lean on the ropes way too much for a big guy. When it's usually the bigger fighters that lean on their opponents to tire them out and break them down on the inside. Still he's only 19. Wonder how long he'll stay at that weight.

--- The metaphysical question of the day is if Andre Son of Who? Ward fights a journeyman in Oakland, does it make any sound more than a squeak?

Maybe spoilers are needed to note this kid Bienvidez puts up a better scrap. Had great fun with that bout listening to Loony Teddy dribbling the score with more more banality than fighters can throw punches. Kid looks a little soft though as though his man strength ain't fully operational yet. Hope he can stick with it as I like the back story of father/son teams, in this case facing a mother/son team. Great stuff.

Final round win for David Benavidez

Undefeated rising contender David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez (16-0, 15 KOs) knocked out Denis Douglin (20-5, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

Douglin, who is trained by his mother Saphya, opened the fight very aggressive, stealing the first round on all three judges’ scorecards. Douglin continued to press the action, also winning the second round battle with two of the three judges, but Benavidez would soon settle in and take control of the war.

“I knew it was going to be a tough fight. I knew Douglin wasn’t going to go out without a fight,” said Benavidez. “So I came in here and started slower than I usually do, just using my jab a little bit more.”

Thats a load of bollocks. The lad was floundering at times but when he saw the opening he went in for the kill and what a kill. Tremendous stoppage. Haven't seen venom like that for years. And remember this kid is only 19, gotta lot to learn, still got soft muscles, aint got the hardness and maturity yet, but what a prospect, welcome to the scene David :thumb:
