Audley Claims "Mental Suffering" Ruined Career

He's given an interview to 5Live and has released a single with all proceeds going to the Samaritans.

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Audley Harrison: Mental suffering stopped me winning a title

"I spent a lot of time really suffering behind the scenes, maybe if I had spoken to someone I might have maintained all my strength and won a world title.”

Now, my first reaction to this was to roll my eyes - how many excuses have we heard for lack of performance? I used to be a staunch defender of Harrison, until it became obvious he just wasn't fit to be a fighter.

But it does make a lot of sense - OK, his chin wasn't good, but the main problem was always the way he fought not so much scared as terrified - holding his right at full-stretch as some sort of detterent, refusing to throw even when the opportunity presented itself, staring wide-eyed like a rabbit in the headlights.

It does seem to make sense.

Psychology is a huge part in boxer's success, if not the dominant one. One of the most obvious examples is Andrew Golota. In 1st rounds he constantly looked like he was in the ring for the first time in his life! Also the way of his loses against Bowe and Grant says a lot. Odlanier Solis is another one. Fighter with great abilities, who couldn't manage to do one simple thing - to weight at least 254 pounds. His second fight against Thompson clearly showed signs of a mental breakdown.

--- Oddly! Most all the few pros who signed up for Rio were made short work of as I predicted.

No way dirty Olympic officiating is gonna give pros a chance to wreck their party. The only reason they changed the rules is because they have designs of running a pro org used to funnel promising amas into the lucrative pro ranks. Hard to know how that works save the AMA prez is a South Korean and multibillionaire who may have the chops to pull it off.

Not being able to box ruined his career.

:haha: Nicely to the point!!

I saw a tweet with a link to the video and was just laughing at Audley becoming a rapper.....Saw that it was a charity thing for the samaritans so fair play to him for that. I was singing along by the end :noidea: :haha:

It was a few days later that I read these quotes and so it all fell into place why he had done the song.

It's a tricky one really in terms of believability. Seems a convenient excuse to justify his lack of promised success, but I guess you have to take it at fave value. Why would you make something like this up, just to save face?

For some reason, I always think Audley managed everything except a world title, but of course he didn't - he contested every title available, but never actually won except the poxy WBF belt and the European title fight in which he beat perennial loser Michael Sprott.

Lack of confidence and self believe were evident in some of his fights - he may have been suffering behind the scene.

I can't see why he would make something like that up as he has nothing to lose or earn by his recent statement, so I believe him.

Made more money than a lot of boxers which isn't too bad considering his boxing ability and mental issues.
