What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

On a positive note: (and I'm completely serious)

It was beautiful to watch Wilder put on a defensive show, winning every round with just his left hand and footwork.

Arreola didn't land a single meaningful punch. Literally not ONE.

- And haterz still insist Wilder has no defense. It's bizarre.....

I think spoiler threads should be just like "Wilder vs Arreola - result and opinions". This title popping up on the main page of the forum suggests that something unusual happened in this fight and may tempt users to click it.

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

The news is not good. This is from ESPN, a few hours ago:

http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/i...ola-eight-round-tko-retains-heavyweight-title

QUOTE:

Wilder said he broke his right hand and tore his right biceps, rendering his right arm useless after the fourth round.

"It's broke," Wilder said, pointing to his right hand as he walked past the ringside media section after the fight. "I also tore my biceps."

Dr. David Williams, an Alabama commission physician, diagnosed Wilder with a broken hand and probable torn biceps in the dressing room

--------------------------------------------

Man, this is REALLY not good. Has any boxer broken his hand TWICE and still fully recovered?

Not wanting to be overly dramatic, but could this be the end of Wilder's career?

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

How in the world does a current boxer (Garcia), a world renowned trainer (Hunter) and long time boxing commentator (Kenny) not realize something was wrong with his right arm/hand? There was no mention of it during the course of the fight. Did they not realize Wilder barely throwing a right hand. Also cupping his left hand onto his right constantly trying to support it.

Joe Calzaghe.

Can't see any reason for it to end Wilder's career - the level he's been fighting at hasn't required both hands, so his backers can just keep lining him up with punching bags and get him a trainer that can teach him to stop throwing everything full-force.

As for a defensive masterclass, it's easy to dance around a guy like Arreola - it's like ice dancing with a hippo.

So Wilder's out for at least 6 months, Povetkibn's suspended, Fury might have his own drug case to answer, Parker's happy in New Zealand fighting nobody. All of a sudden, it looks like the division might end up being Klitschko vs Joshua - I bet Wlad's pleased he never retired.

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

--- Povetkin ain't suspended and nanograms ain't enough to fail a drug test. Wilder will be sacrificed to him next year to pay off his and sugar daddy Haymon settlement for skipping out on the first fight.

You're right he's not suspended, I was making assumptions. The only person who says it was nanograms is Povetkin's promoter - VADA and WADA have made no comment. Meanwhile, excretion studies are suggesting that higher concentrations obviously take longer to excrete, up to "a few months" - I'm not sure 7 months is still "a few"

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

Arreola takes a long time does not give the level to play in world title fights. It has a big heart but his time has passed. He could crown against Stiverne and was not able to defeat him in his two fights. That was his point and end

Yeah, he looked beyond shot. He doesn't even have any arm speed left.

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

First of all, I love Deontay Wilder. But, always but, he should has knocked out Arreola before the 4th round, when it looks like he broke his hand. Arreola has nothing left on his tank. He is now so slow and looked in wobbly legs everytime Wilder cought him with a hard hand. I think Wilder has been too much afraid of his last 5 opponents during their fights. Why?. Maybe because in his fight with Stiverne he received his first hard shot..

In another way. I saw Wilder´s right arm-elbow damaged when he entered the ring. Maybe that wound had something to do with his later injury. I wish him a good, complete recovery.

I strongly disagree. Here's why:

First, it''s never a good idea to go for an early KO. Even an average opponent can get lucky if yo give him an opening. A smart fighter always studies his opponent, assesses his game plan & timing, then start to attack a few rounds later.

Despite what some pundits & fans seem to think, Wilder has always been extremely patient and controlled in the ring. (He only goes bat-shit crazy once he knows his opponent is hurt.) Less than half of his pro fights ended in the first round, and half of THOSE came in his first ten bouts or so, before he really knew any better.

Second, Wilder desperately needs all the experience he can get. Even guys like Arreola & Molina present challenges. They aren't "automatic" victories. Wilder very clearly was purposely making both fights go into the later rounds on purpose, so as to gain a little more pracice against actual (such as they were) opponents. With Molina in particular, he appeared to be working on his inside game.

--------------------

It's not all good, of course. I'm very troubled by Wilder's propensity to clown around in the ring. i don't care who the opponent is, that takes your focus away. It could well be the reason he hurt himself, both this time and in 2009.

Additionally, while I've enjoyed watching him go bat-shit crazy at the end of most of his fights, against Arreola he done lost his MIND. (Again, possibly because he was too concerned with clowning & showing off for his hometown fans.) Those punches he threw at the end of round 4 were ridiculous, and I've NEVER criticized Wilder for this before. He was not in proper position, and threw at absurd angles. That surely cause the break, and probably also the muscle damage.

Heck, Wilder even hit Arreola while he was down, which should have been a points deduction.

Well, maybe he'll finally learn from his mistakes. I love a fighter who knows how to close the show when he sells blood, and have always praised Wilder for this, (even in the Fraudley fight) but this time it was absurd, dangerous (obviously) and inexcusable.

"Dis frickin' guy ........." :noidea:

Re: What happened to Wilder/Arreola?

Out for 1 year they're saying.. This could be very bad for Wilders career.

He won't be looking at fighting Povetkin, Fury, Joshua as his next fight.

Damn. And he already LOST a year, thank to Povetkin's stalling and then PEDs thing.

Well, we can always root for Parker and Ortiz.

You Brits can support AJ, I won't hold it against you.

I might chuckle a little, though...

My bad, I read it wrong. Report says out for the rest of this year.

While supporting a 38-year-old steroid cheat and a guy who very nearly lost to Carlos Takam. I wouldn't chuckle too hard;-)
