WBA have announced a Unification tournament at Heavyweight.

Fury vs Klitschko 2 (Super) to face winner of Luis Ortiz vs Alexander Ustinov (Interim).

Winner of Ruslan Chagaev vs Lucas Browne (regular) to face Fres Oquendo. The two that come-out on top will meet in the WBA Unification Final. Only the WBA would need a tournament to sort out it's own belt mess but some good fights if all happens as planned.

WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza explained.

“We currently have three world champions,” he said, “Tyson Fury as the Super Champion, Ruslan Chagaev as the Regular Champion, and Luis Oritz as the Interim Champion. In order to have one champion like everybody is expecting from the WBA, and like everybody wants, we have set the following tournament.

“Ruslan Chagaev will face Lucas Browne on March the 5th in Germany. The winner must face Fres Oquendo, who by U.S. court order earned his right to this fight.

“The next group will start with a fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury. When Klitschko and Fury met the first time, there was a contract approved by the WBA that had a rematch clause that we intend to respect. So the winner of this fight will have to face the winner of Luis Ortiz against Alexander Ustinov, a fight that was called for negotiations and the end period will be February 4th.

“In any case,” continued Sr. Mendoza, “if they don’t reach an agreement, we will have a purse bid that will determine the date and the place of the fight. The winners of the two groups will fight for the world championship and the WBA will have only one champion as everybody expects.”

let me know when this actually happens.

First: "The" are going to let Wlad actually fight in the rematch, so he will destroy Fury, setting up the massive money-maker that is Fury-Klitschko III.

Second: Even if Fury were to win the third fight, which is unlikely since Wlad will want to retire afterwards instead of ever facing Wilder, and he'll want to go out on a win, Fury would never agree to face Ortiz. There are all sorts of ways to avoid that fight, until Ortiz is too old to be competitive.

You can bet the farm on this.

--- WBA deserve to have Fres fight Ustinov for their super title.

If Wlad does beat Fury, I think he'll set up an easy def before the blockbuster trilogy finale that gets him near the end of his tv contract. It's all about the money at this stage for him.

WBA causes a clusterfuck by naming super, regular and interim champions. Now they make a tournament chart, put some names on there and make believe everything will be great again.

I like the sound of this if only after it they keep 1 champion. But, they won't and soon as they announce 1 single winner they will split the belts up again to get more sanctioning fees.

Bit of a farce having 3 champions.

Agreed, And can someone please tell me, how Fres Oquendo needs one fight less compared to everyone else? That's just weird, but then again it's the WBA...

This goes someway to explaining Fres's inclusion. Tbh the WBA calling Ortiz vs Matias Ariel Vidondo an 'Interim' title fight made the mess worse.

Fres Oquendo hurt sparring, pulls out of bout vs. Ruslan Chagaev

by Dan Rafael (06-10-2015)

Heavyweight Fres Oquendo suffered a shoulder injury during a recent sparring session at his Chicago training camp, forcing him to withdraw from his rematch against secondary titleholder Ruslan Chagaev.

They were due to meet on Oct. 17 at Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, Germany, but with Oquendo pulling out so close to the date of the fight the card has been called off.

"He injured his shoulder sparring, which has been confirmed by an MRI," Square Ring CEO John Wirt, Oquendo's co-promoter with Bobby Hitz, told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

"Technically, (it is) a likely anterior labral tear. I haven't heard yet how long he's going to be out, but I have been hearing that surgery may be required. It's really unfortunate because he was in fantastic shape and we were a little over a week from flying to Germany."

In June 2014, Oquendo traveled to Grozny, Russia, and lost a majority decision to Chagaev for a vacant secondary title. Wladimir Klitschko is the recognized world champion.

Oquendo had a rematch clause in the contract but Chagaev's team attempted to set up another title defense first. It got even uglier as Oquendo claimed he was not paid for the fight and the Chagaev team claimed Oquendo failed a drug test.

Oquendo's team sued in United States federal court to force the rematch and won an injunction to stop Chagaev from defending the belt against anyone other than Oquendo.

Ultimately, the sides made a deal under which Chagaev (34-2-1, 21 KOs), 36, a native of Uzbekistan living in Germany, was allowed to defend against Francesco Pianeta -- as long as the winner agreed to fight Oquendo (37-8, 24 KOs), 42, next. Chagaev knocked out Pianeta in the first round on July 11 in Magdeburg, Germany.

The Chagaev-Oquendo winner was to next fight Australian mandatory contender Lucas Browne.

Now it remains to be seen if and when Chagaev-Oquendo will be rescheduled. It will depend on how long Oquendo is going to be out of action. The court might also have a say in whether Chagaev can move on to another defense before facing Oquendo again.

Re: WBA have announced a Unification tournament at Heavyweight

need more of these tournaments throughout boxing in all weight classes and organization bodies. That way the top contenders will fight one another rather than bums like mark de mori.

Haye is not a top contender, so I have no problem with him fighting the likes of De Mori, so long as it doesn't somehow turn into a title shot. If anything, this tournament shows what a poor state the WBA ratings are in - Ustinov and Oquendo? Take Fury out of the draw and it's a festival of has-beens and never-weres. Ortiz is the only one who might make something of himself, yet all of these people are "world champions"

The fact that one governing body can include three champions in it's own unification tournament shows what a steaming pile of shit the WBA is. To me a unification tournament would be the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO champs facing off but then I'm old fashioned.;-)

The WBC could have a similar tournament, but theirs would differ by virtue of an extra entry on the flow chart after the winner has been crowned:

The final: Is winner a Mexican?

If yes, end here.

If no, strip tournament winner and award belt to Julio Cesar Chavez, one of Julio Cesar Chavez's family, or anyone with a Mexican accent.

Re: WBA have announced a Unification tournament at Heavyweight

This is hilarious - as WelshDevilRob says, only the WBA would need a tournament for a belt it has already split and awarded in different guises to multiple fights. The very fact that Fres Oquendo is in the tournament, let alone closer to a unification match than the 'super' and 'regular' champions, makes this a self-parody. At least there's some indication that the WBA is (at long last) trying to counteract the comedic proliferation of title belts it hands out. I don't hold out great hope this will lead to all the matches being made. While Klitschko was pretty protective of his belts by honouring mandatories (often to our detriment as fans), there's no guarantee he wins them back off Fury and in general some of the fighters here are going to i. avoid fighting Ortiz like the plague ii. look to get in with Wilder for the potentially bigger money and the unification with the WBC
