Best "under the radar" fights of 2015?

Happy New Year & all that rot.

Now that we have about 2 weeks with no important boxing events happening, it's a good time to catch up on last year.

So, what are your favorite fights of 2015, that weren't talked about much and maybe were missed by a lot of fans? You know, early undercard bouts, or foreign-only broadcasts. It should be either a spectacular battle, or a one-way beatdown that shows a top-prospect at his best.

If possible, don't list high-profile fights here, no matter how great. (Such as LSC vs Abner Mares.)

Adding a few details, as I have, would be nice, but certainly not required. Ditto for YouTube links, when they exist.

I'll start, below:

Re: Best "under the radar" fights of 2015?

Jan. 9 Vyacheslav Shabranskyy TKO’s Garrett Wilson, 10 rounds, LHW

Shabransky looks pretty good. Shades of Kovalev.

Wilson is TOUGH, and had never been down before, yet Shabransky put him down twice.

———————————————————————

Jan. 30 Tony Luis UD’s Karl Dargan (huge upset) - 10 rounds, LW

- Both guys have really fast hands !. Lots of skill & guts from both.

underdog Luis was smaller, but got inside and did fantastic work on Dargan’s body.

Dargan had no clue how to deal with the aggression.

————————————————————————

Feb. 27 Diego De La Hoya UD’s Manuel Roman, 8 rounds, JFW

- A great, fast-paced fight. Diego looks very good. Great speed & reflexes.

————————————————————————

March 21 Robert Helenius TKO’s Andras Csomor.

A total mis-match, but Helenius still looked spectacular. Worth seeing simply to assess where Helenius may be at right now.

————————————————————————

March 26 Fredrick Lawson SD over Breidis Prescott 10 rounds, WW

- Lawson is with King Sports, and is now 24 (20) - 0.

Prescott is only avg, but still a huge step up for Lawson.

LAWSON LOOKS GOOD ! Perfect fundamentals. Good defensive movement.

————————————————————————

April 10 Denis Lebedev UD’s Youri Kalenga !

Lebedev looked GREAT ! He was in fantastic shape, and his defensive movement was surprisingly excellent. IMO, Kalenga played it way too safe, staying so far outside that almost none of his punches landed. (Lebedev also did a great job blocking them)

————————————————————————

April 10 Dimitry Kudryashov KO’s Francuisco Palacious in the first round !

- Dimitry threw a double left hook, seemingly effortless, and Palacious went down like a sack of potatoes! KO OF THE YEAR !

————————————————————————

April 18 Amir Imam UD’s Walter Castillo - JWW

- KO specialist Imam KO’d Maldonado in January, in a spectacular fight.

I thought Castillo was aggressive & brave, and landed a ton of punches. However, the judges had it a near shutout. (bullshit)

Still Imam deserved the win. Of course, he has since fallen from grace quite a bit, but this was him at his best, FWIW.

————————————————————————

May 16 Ilunga Makabu KO’s Thabiso Mchunu in 6. (WBC CW eliminator)

Sadly, no one has been able to find of video of this important fight.

- According to reports, Mchunu put Makabu down early, but Makabu survived it.

Most say Mchunu was way ahead, but Makabu landed a killer left hook that dropped Mchunu like a dead goose falling out of the sky.

HUGE-hitting Makabu is now evidently the mandatory challenger for the brilliant Grigory Drozd.

————————————————————————

May 22 Grigory Drozd TKO’s Lukasz Janik in 9 - CW

Funny, I was just talking about Drozd ...... ;-)

- Janik made it ugly, clinching constantly, but Drozd managed to keep breaking away, and looked spectacular: Fast, balanced, combinations …

This fight is worth seeing simply because Drozd is so good.

Re: Best "under the radar" fights of 2015?

Kyoo Hwan Hwang vsChan Hee Park and Rex Tso vs Michael Enriquez . Cracking fights .

Man, you're not kidding! I dunno anything about these guys (no time to really follow the Asian scene at all) but this one is fun to watch. Maybe a little sloppy, not quite elite level from either fighter, but still great.

That guy in the blue trunks looks GOOD. - A little open on the inside, but then given how long his reach is, that's still really impressive.

& the smaller guy is fearless. Pretty good counterpuncher.

Totally agreed, never heard of these guys before you told me. It was fun to watch, definitely an "under the radar" fight! Thank you very much!

Re: Best "under the radar" fights of 2015?

Thaank you very much for your list of underrated fights in 2016, Cableaddict.

:tea:

Here are some more. A few (such as the first one, below) weren't great fights per se, but really showcase an up&coming talent, so lots of fun to watch, regardless. A couple were real cracker fights. A few might not be so "under the radar," but who cares? ;-)

SPOILERS AHEAD:

================================================================

June 6 Junior Younan TKO’s Mike Sawyer, 6 rounds, LHW

- Crazy-haired Youman is massively exciting! Huge output & good accuracy. His opponent was a punching bag, but this guy swings for the fences. FUN !

————————————————

Nov. 4 At Kazan, Russia: (This was the Povetkin - Wach undercard. Holy moley, this was easily the best total card of the year ….)

Viskhan Murzabekov KO’s Solomon Bogere . (WW)

WOW ! What a left hook ! This guys looks like a monster, but his opponent was really a JWW, and Murz is actually a SWW.

## Dimitry Bivol DESTROYS Jackson Jr ! (LHW)

- Bivol, now 5 (5) -0, has SERIOUS skills. I love the way he attacks from way outside, with perfect footwork & balance. This is definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

## Ola Afolabi KO’s Rakhim Chakhkiev , CW. ANOTHER UPSET !!!!

35 y-o Afolabi only had a 50% KO ratio. Everyone expected a blow-out.

SPOILERS:

Chakhkiev was 25 (24) - 1 He threw nothing but bombs for four rounds. In the fifth, Chakiev slowed down, Ola started throwing beautiful jabs, and then took out Chakiev with an incredible left-hook counter.

# Duradola TKOS’s Dmitry Kudryashov !! (CW) OMFG !!! HUGE UPSET !

- Kudry put Duradola down early on, but Duradola was tough as nails, came back hard, and Kudry just stood there taking bombs to his head. His defense was non-existant, and the powerful Duradola just wailed away. It actually should have been stopped even earlier.

Denis Lebedev KO’s. Lateef Kayode, for Lebedev's WBA CW title

- The 36 y-o Lebedev looked AMAZING. Fit, super fast hands, very controlled aggression with excellent counterpunching. Perhaps his best showing to date !

————————————————

Nov. 7 Callum Smith DESTROYS Rocky Fielding in 1 round !

- For vacant British SMW title.

DAYUM, what a performance by Smith!

Smith fights tall with excellent fundamentals, but also can rough it up on the inside. Fielding is also really good. He’s very dangerous & was throwing some hard punches himself, but Smith dropped him three times in the first round. Massive flurries with super-fast hands. A long reach, with great balance & ring generalship.

——————————————

At Miami (NBC Sports Net):

Kevin Bizier TKO’s Fredrick Lawson ! IBF WW eliminator

GREAT FIGHT!

- I REALLY like Lawson. Trained by Abel Sanchez, he’s 24 (20) -0.

His last fight was a UD over Breidis Prescot

Bizier had just lost to some cabby. Yet, he was smart, aggressive, and tough as nails. He showed great defense, and landed a ton of body shots on Lawson. Lawson landed plenty of his own, but Bizier wouldn’t go down.

At the end of the tenth, Lawson RTD, due to a BROKEN JAW.

BIZIER WILL NOW FACE KELL BROOK, for the IBF WW Championship.

————————————————

Nov. 13 Edwin Rodriguez KO’s Michael Seals, 10 rounds, LHW

- FOTY CANDIDATE !!!!! Both men went down several times. Both throwing huge bombs & not backing down. Seals has great power, but he leaves his left below his waist, just begging to be KO’d. Rodriguez (who’s only loss was to Ward) is sloppy too, throwing wide, looping punches, but he showed incredible heart in this fight.

——————————————————

Nov. 14 In The Ukraine /K2 Promotions. Two fights that were one-sided but worth watching for the sake of seeing how good the winner was.

Denys Berinchyk TKO’s Innocent Anyanwu - SLW

- Berinchyk is a monster. Just a devastating offensive machine. Crazy high-output flurries on the inside from all sorts of angles.

Khusein Baysangurov UD’s Bryan Boussis WBO Youth WW title

- This guy looks amazing! Thudding power, great fundamentals, great aggression.

- He looks HUGE for a WW. Short & stocky, and fights a lot like prime Mike Tyson. (slight peekaboo defense & inside angled attack.)

————————————————

Dec. 5 Marcus Browne DESTROYS Fancisco Seirra in 2 rounds, LHW.

- I’m a HUGE fan of Marcus Browne, and consider him to have the best chance of any LHW to dethrone Sergey. Brown landed massive body shots, plus his deadly right hook, over & over. he just busted Seirra up, until the TKO.

————————————————

Dec. 8 Keith Tapia UD’s Garrett Wilson - CW

(Nobody pays attention to the CW division, yet it’s currently the deepest and most exciting in the sport.)

A VERY TOUGH BATTLE ! - But Tapia won almost every round, under heavy pressure. Wilson came loaded for bear, and was in beast-mode, but Tapia really rose to the occasion. He moved really well, stayed calm under relentless pressure, show solid footwork and balance, and threw a ton of accurate combos.

The only off thing was Tapia fighting so much on the inside. He definitely knows how to fight tall, but he seemingly chose not to for much of this fight. Maybe that's good, as he's improving his inside game, or maybe it's foolish, I dunno.

Either way, I'm really starting to like this guy.

————————————————

Dec. 12 Ismael Barroso KO’s Kevin Mitchell ! 12 rounds, LW

- Barroso was aggressive & accurate. He REALLY brought it !

Barroso is now 19 (18) - 0. He fights Crolla next for some belt.

#######################################################################################

And of course, a few HIGH PROFILE fights that you definitely want to make sure you’ve seen:

June 6th Krzysztof Glowacki TKO’s Marco Huck ! - for Huck's WBO CW title

Nov 14th Francisco Vargas TKO’s Takashi Miura, for Miura's WBC SFW title.

- WOW !!! FOTY, in my humble opinion !!!!!

Both men threw massive punishment. Both men were down. Miura has the granite chin of all time, and also a very hard puncher. Vargas was just about finished at the end of round 8. Then he came out in the 9th and pulverized Miura with a long, accurate combination.

Dec. 11 Nonito Donaire UD’s Cesar Juarez, - for vacant WBO Jr featherweight title

- GREAT FIGHT !!! Juarez was tough as nails, and just kept coming. Very impressive.

Dec. 19 Luis Ortiz TKO7 Bryant Jennings ! Ortiz arrives !

Dec. 19 Liam Smith TKO’s Jimmy Kelly, for Smith's WBO JMW title.

- Smith looks VERY good! Just all around great.
