Drug bust Mitch on the brink

KEVIN MITCHELL'S fight career is on the brink of collapse after he was busted by cops for alleged possession of cocaine and running a cannabis farm with his mum Alice.

The 26-year-old was due to challenge John Murray for the European lightweight title this summer.

But British Boxing Board officials are investigating and will strip Mitchell of his fight licence if claims are found to be true.

BBBC secretary Robert Smith said: "I have spoken to the boxer's promoter Frank Warren and I am now awaiting for Mitchell's solicitor to come and see us with regard to the arrest.

"These are serious allegations but when we have heard from Mitchell's solicitor, the Board will decide what to do.

"Can we take away a fighter's licence? Once we know the full facts, it is possible but everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

"I understand there were plans for Mitchell to box on a show. But we will have to deal with this first."

Mitchell, who has been bailed until June, came close to retiring after he was stopped in three rounds by Aussie Michael Katsidis for the interim WBO world crown at Upton Park last May.

The Londoner admitted after the first defeat of his career he had cut corners in training by having nights out on the booze ahead of the bout.

Warren gave Mitchell another chance to rebuild his career.

But he is understood to feel badly let down by the drug allegations that were only made public two weeks after his initial arrest.

If it is true, then i can imagine he'll get a prison sentence. I don't think it would be too long. Perhaps 12-18 months? But, the BBBC will strip him of his license so what would that mean long term? Would he be able to re-apply upon release? Or would he have to fight abroad for a while? If it's true then he's gone and done something really stupid.

I guess it depends just what it mean by cannabis farm. If it is anything similar to the Vietnamese-style full houses converted to grow the stuff then he'll more than likely get a sentence a fair bit heavier than that. You'd be talking 100k+ of cannabis every few months and that kind of level comes with pretty hefty punishment.

My brother said he knew him and mentioned about this weed farm a couple of years ago but I never took any notice as it seemed a bit unreal. He mentioned that him and his brother, Vinny were in on it.
