The_budweiser
Scott Quigg is set to fight Kiko Martinez after giving up on a summer showdown with Carl Frampton. The WBA super bantamweight champion will make the sixth defence of his title at the Manchester Arena on July 18. Anthony Crolla is also expected to make his comeback on the same show. Quigg has turned to Martinez after IBF champion Frampton turned down a £1.5m offer to secure an all-British clash. The undefeated 26-year-old from Bury hasn’t fought since undergoing hand surgery before Christmas. It was hoped that he would take on his Belfast rival Frampton in a world title unification clash this summer. But negotiations between promoters Eddie Hearn and Barry McGuigan have continued to stall. It will be a major disappointment to boxing fans, with Quigg-Frampton one of the most anticipated fights of the year. And with Quigg setting his sights on breaking into America this year - as well as stepping up in weight - it places major question marks over whether the bout will ever go ahead. Martinez lost his IBF title to Frampton last September. Source: manchestereveningnews
Ton
Re: Not Frampton Not Rigondeaux but Kiko Martinez Not a bad opponent, Martinez is a live opponent with a dangerous punch. Don't think Quigg will be careless enough to do a Bernard Dunne and get clocked. Quigg and Frampton will eventually meet one day! They have plenty of years in them yet. BoztheMadman
Re: Not Frampton Not Rigondeaux but Kiko Martinez So, Quigg's fighting Frampton's leftovers...isn't he worried about what that says about him? :ranger:
WelshDevilRob
Re: Not Frampton Not Rigondeaux but Kiko Martinez I give Kiko an excellent chance of winning. It's not Donaire, Frampton or Rigo but it's a mighty tough challenge for Scott Quigg.
iamasadlittleboy
Re: Not Frampton Not Rigondeaux but Kiko Martinez Good fight but I'm with Boz. Quigg is fighting a guy twice beaten by Frampton... Zzzz
QBoxing
Re: Not Frampton Not Rigondeaux but Kiko Martinez I don't see what the big deal is. From a distant perspective, one of an American boxing fan, I can't see anything really negative about this fight. Kiko Martinez is still one of the five best Super Bantamweights in my opinion. Quigg has barely fought a top fifteen Super Bantamweight thus far, so I cannot possibly complain about this step up in competition. Had it been another top five 122-lber whom Kiko suffered a pair of "courageous defeats" to, this wouldn't be the same discussion. Quigg hasn't accomplished the feats Frampton has in his professional career, despite his petty WBA strap. I don't know if he'll be able to beat Martinez! He hasn't proved himself to be able to win on this level yet. He should still be favored, though. That doesn't make it any less of a fight to me, nor does Frampton having beat the Spaniard first (and second). I'm looking forward to this one. Even after being dismantled so easily by Frampton in their last fight? I don't agree. He's obviously aged overnight. Well, he's about 35...not exactly overnight. It seems that when he's not able to push his opponents around, he loses.

WelshDevilRob
Re: Scott Quigg to defend against Kiko Martinez in July Tough fight to call. It's a very good match-up. I know Quigg will get slated for this fight (due to the Frampton factor) but it's not an easy one for him.
WelshDevilRob
Re: Scott Quigg to defend against Kiko Martinez in July Scott Quigg expecting hardest fight of career against Kiko Scott Quigg says Kiko Martinez is the most dangerous opponent of his reign as WBA World Super Bantamweight champion as they clash for the title on Saturday (July 18) at the Manchester Arena live on Sky Sports – but says the challenger is not ready for the new and improved champion. Quigg swatted aside his first three challengers inside three rounds before Hidenori Otake took him the distance in Liverpool in November. The Bury star picked up a hand injury during that fight that forced him onto the sidelines. The 26 year old believes that time out has been beneficial ahead of his toughest night, as he enters the fight with the hard-hitting former IBF ruler in the best physical and mental place in his eight-year career.
