He couldn't beat an aged middleweight posing as a super-middle, despite two attempts, but he feels confident against a guy who is a natural super-middle, effectively in his prime and already dealt with Froch, who is five times the fighter Smith is. Ward evidently wants to play silly buggers in an attempt to annoy Froch, but it's an embarrassment of a fight.

re: Paul Smith to challenge Andre Ward (Spoilers)

I really do expect Andre Ward to toy with Paul Smith and make it last as long as needed to shift off ring rust.

Ward stoppage any time he chooses.

--- Yeah, Ward'll practice his head butts, hitting on the break and clinching so the ref can warn Smith for the infractions.

re: Paul Smith to challenge Andre Ward (Spoilers)

Smith is a good challenge, if the competition is "who is the biggest dick head in boxing". He's what, the second best Super Middleweight in his own family and yet he keeps getting big fights. Following his loss to Groves he wasn't big enough to fight at 168 and now he's at whatever catchweight....

Andre Ward should be ashamed of himself, Ward's fans should be ashamed of their man and whoever Ward's current promoter is (Jay Z?) should piss off out-of boxing for even trying to sell this bull crap.

Have to say I agree here.

I get Ward has had a long layoff, but Paul Smith is below the required standard even for a warm up.

re: Paul Smith to challenge Andre Ward (Spoilers)

He's a good British-level fighter, but that's about it.

He has put on good performances at World level and was very unlucky not to get the nod for a world title...your opinion is redundant!!

He has put in one good performance, against an old middleweight who isn't much of a boxer, for the irrelevant WBO title, and lost. Wasn't even all that close, it's just the judges were so obviously biased, he got a rematch.

He lost the rematch even more comprehensively, and has losses to DeGale and Groves, neither of whom has ever been a world champion. He has only ever managed to achieve British honours, and then mostly by beating a past-it Tony Dodson.

Yeah, you're right, he's a superstar - no wonder Andre Ward was so desperate to test himself :mlol:

No one is saying he is a superstar you clown...but to say he is a domestic level is retarded!!

Groves fought for a world title, Degale is at World level... and Smith himself fought and came out of fighting at Wolrd level with credit....and his next fight is at World level!!

STOP BRAIN FARTING gav or talk about snooker or something!!

Mofo 3/4 fights ago he was fighting fighters like 10-52-2 and 7-3-2. Six fights ago he was fighting a 4-12-1 fighter. I'd say that's a domestic level fighter who got a break from Team Abraham as Sauerland were looking for a keep busy/easy option before a money fight with Stieglitz. Smith did come out with a lot of credit, he performed a lot better than I thought he could in the first fight but he didn't do so well in the second fight. I expect Ward's team has picked Smith also as they see him as an easy option.

He has not beaten a European-level fighter, has only a losing performance against an old natural middleweight who was never a brilliant boxer to start with. His best win is Tony Dodson or Tony Quigley. He is most definitely not world class.

I'll talk about snooker when there's snooker to talk about - right now I'm happy having a calm and rational discussion about Paul Smith. If you can manage calm and rational, feel free to join in.

What you are saying is completely irrational....he is fighting consistently at World level now and even if he is the lower end of this tier he is still above being a domestic class fighter!!!

No, irrational means lacking reason - I have provided reasons. Thankfully, now so have you.

I don't agree with them though - getting loads of fights at a particular level doesn't mean you're suited to that level. If I turn pro tomorrow and somehow negotiate myself fights against Wlad and Deontay Wilder, does that mean I'm a world-class fighter? Or does it mean I'm an awful fighter who happens to be fighting world-class competition?

Weigh-in controversy

Andre Ward 171.8 vs. Paul Smith 176.4

The bout was signed at a 172lb catch weight. Smith weighed 165.5 for his last bout in April, so he’s nearly 11 pounds heavier for this one.

re: Paul Smith to challenge Andre Ward (Spoilers)

Andre Ward

"I'm disappointed with Paul," Ward told Sky Sports.

"I heard last night that as of yesterday morning he was eight pounds over. You've got to realise in negotiations, my team said 172 and he fought to have it at 170. And he comes in four pounds overweight. It's very unprofessional.

"Right now my team has work to do with the commission and with Paul's team. We're just not going to be okay with that. I did my part to make my weight like a professional. If he struggled that much with the weight he should have alerted us a long time ago. There could have been a change in the weight. If you wait until the last minute and then get on the scales - it's not a good look.

"It makes you think, 'is this a strategy?' It doesn't make me more confident - it makes me more motivated. I did my part to make the weight. He didn't and I feel a certain way about that."

Eddie Hearn

"Obviously he got things wrong," he said.

"Mainly with the travelling and the water retention, the way he does the weight - he's taken on a lot of fluids - and it hasn't worked out for him. Now he's missed the weight.

"We'll talk - I'm sure it will be fine for the fight. It seems to be a common trend right now in boxing. There are always issues now to resolve and discuss."
