Kovalev - Stevenson Purse Bid Is Off !

Well, you knew it was too good to be true. Kathy Duva has pulled out of the purse bid ordered by the WBC, which would have given us the fight of the year sometime this fall.

Sergey Kovalev withdraws from purse bid for Adonis Stevenson bout | Boxing - Yahoo Sports

Not a word Duva said makes any sense at all. This is shameless. I bet Sergey is PISSED, but there's nothing he can do about it.

Is 2015 the new 2014?

Re: Kovalev - Stevenson Purse Bid Is Off !

What troubles me more than the sewage coming out of Kathy Duva's mouth, is the fact that she has a contract with HBO that FORBIDS any of her fighters from appearing on another network. Is that even legal?

It's one thing to have an exclusive contract as a promotor, wherein you agree to never host or promote a fight on another network. It's a whole 'nother thing to say that the fighter himself can't take such a fight. THAT IS MANAGEMENT.

So main events is acting as both manager and promotor? Isn't that a clear violation of the Ali Act?

--- Haymon has made several fortunes now running roughshod over the Ali act.

Law is only as good as the enforcement and boxing is way down on authorities' watch list obviously as anyone watching the weekly travesty of refereeing and judging can testify. You've confused a promoter's overblown words with terms of a legal contract that the public has never seen. According to Duva she has a 50/50 contract currently being reviewed by Stevenson's team that takes care of all the particulars in a proven fashion. Why should she abandon all that hard work on the arbitrary whim of an ABC? Let the riffraff submit paltry purse bids for Stevenson, she only wants to make the biggest money possible by sealing the deal as quickly as possible to clear the way this year while the fight still has the remnants of any heat left.

You're right about one thing, London: We don't know if Duva actually has that clause in writing with HBO. Maybe it's a "wink wink" agreement, as it treads some dangerous legal waters.

Regardless, it seems obvious to me that what Duva wants here is to make sure she gets the fight, and at the lowest possible price. You can't blame her, I guess, except this is not in Sergey's interest at all. AFAIK, a purse bid means that both fighters end up getting paid a LOT more money. Duva is doing exactly what Haymon did to Quillin by nixing the Korobov fight. Quillin would have literally made 1 million dollars more than what he got paid last week.

Does Duva hold that much power over Kovalev, or is Sergey just really dumb?

--- A purse bid usually is a last resort. Manny vs Floydy getting screwed for not going to bid?

.....NOT...............

Floyd has an iron-clad deal with Showtime. A purse bid would not be possible.

With Stevenson-Kovalev, imagine if Roc nation started bidding, or that crazy Russian dude who paid Wlad trillions of rubles for the Povetkin non-fight? We're talking ridiculous income for the fighters.

Most purse bids are small because most big fights get made naturally.

From what I understand, last fall it was actually Kathy Duva who ASKED the WBC to force a purse bid.

I don't know all the details, but it sound like it really backfired on her.

Does anyone know exactly what happened?

Anyway, you gott'a love what Mauricio Sulaiman has been doing since the old man died. There are of course limits to what he can make happen, but hi definitely seems to have the good of the sport as one of his main concerns.

Good on, Mauricio for trying to make the big fights happen. I like Kathy but she should push this opportunity to make the fight.

2: Kovalev doesn't have a deal with HBO, Duva does.

How do you figure that? All the reports I saw were that HBO were impressed by Kovalev's violent winning streak to take the title and wanted him on the books. Duva may have brokered the deal, but Kovalev must have signed it at some stage.
