Boxcino

The Boxcino tournament continues tonight.

ESPN 2 (in the United States) will show four eight-round semi-final bouts for the Junior Middleweight and Heavyweight editions of the tournament.

Some notable names still standing include Ukrainian prospect Stanyslav Skorokhod (JMW), 2014 Boxcino finalist Brandon Adams (JMW), and heavy-handed Russian Andrey Fedosov (HW). It's not a star-studded tournament, like, say, Prizefighter in the UK or Super 8 in NZ (right?), so it may struggle to find an audience in a world where big-names take the headlines. Some of these guys may be good enough to become contenders, so, I'm down for a "Boxcino" showcase every time I have the chance.

This year, it's been off to a decent-enough start and saw a few first-round upsets. With the exception of Razvan Cojanu, most of these fighters are pretty fun to watch, and bring some spirit into the ring. There isn't much to knack about that -- I look forward to tonight's continuation of the tourney, and to see who makes it to the finals.

Re: Boxcino

Unfortunately it seems like it will clash with Ramirez Vs Afolabi :(

I'll be tracking that one down on Youtube.

I haven't seen much of Ramirez, but Afolabi is certainly no-joke. Even on the road, I'm still favoring familiarity -- Ola should be able to grind this one out. The winner will get a title shot if I'm not mistaken, so, both should be putting up career-best performances, but I just have to go with Afolabi do to his experience at a high level.

This fight, Lebedev-Kalenga, Chakhkiev, and Kudryashov? Us fans of the always-entertaining 200-lbers are getting a treat today... I should get :btt:, though.

Re: Boxcino

That was fun last night. The Donovan Dennis knockout of Razvan Cojanu was one of the best we've seen in the Heavyweight division in a while. He put the Romanian straight off to sleep with a second-round shocker. Cojanu is usually good at slowing the pace of the fight and dulling out his opponent in getting the victory, so I'm not feeling sorry for him about that sneaky punch and result.

John Thompson also put up a good showing to edge the Ukrainian prospect Skorokhod in the Junior Middleweight semis. Skorokhod didn't pull the trigger enough and was simply outworked by another sharp boxer -- one more experienced than himself. Good turnaround for Thompson if he can win this tournament against Brandon Adams. His first and only loss to Frank Galarza on Shobox came quite suddenly and could've kept him out of the spotlight for a while. He's really making it look like a fluke and could win this Boxcino tournament as a late-replacement.

I actually think he has what it takes if he boxes well but am siding with Adams and Andrey Fedosov to gut it out in the finals. Both have taken a loss or two and struggled in this very tournament, and I think it will serve them well when they face a couple of hungry opponents.

Anyways, great work by Banner Promotions.
