This is Hinata Maruta (0-0) an 18 year old Japanese fighter who is widely regarded as another "wunderkind". He's been raved about by those who have sparred with him (including the world ranked Shun Kubo), gym across Japan have been using him for high quality sparring and the rumour is that he's going to debut against a world ranked foe in the Autumn.

Described as "The No.1 Hope" some seem to think he could well be more sensational in the ring than the likes of Naoya Inoue, Kosei Tanaka, Takuma Inoue and Ken Shiro. Whilst that's yet to be seen it's unlikely we'll have to wait long for the youngster to make his impact, especially the way such youngsters are matched in Japan.

Oh and for those wonder he's expected to begin his career at either Bantamweight or Super Bantamweight though could well make his name at Featherweight if not Super Featherweight and given his listed height, around 5'9", there is every chance he could bulk into a very well sized Welterweight before his career is over.

So, will he be as good as they say or not? If I remember I'll bump this in 18 months and see where he is at that point.

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

Are there any young fighters in Japan who aren't expected to win world titles and amaze the world? I mean I know there's a lot of people there but you never hear of a Japanese journeyman.

You never hear about them as they don't get the attention British journeymen get. Over here we get guys with losses piling up who supposedly teach youngsters how to fight and are "valuable to the development of a fighter", in Japan that happens in the gym and the low level fighters are matched accordingly. Instead of 3-46 records they end up with things like 8-19. Many of their "record padders" (our Latvian lemmings) are imports from Thailand and Indonesia.

The equivalent to our journeyman would be someone like Shunsuke Sato (7-16-2, 4).

One of the big differences between us and them is that they have a graded license system. If you were a good amateur you'll likely get a B grade license before your debut which sees you needing to face a B level guy or an import, and being matched in 6 or 5 rounders. If you're a rank novice you get a C grade license and will be matched in 4 rounders (barring the Rookie of the Year final). You then move up the license system until you find fighters on the same level as you...or you go on to dominate at the title level.

As for the young guys not expected to win titles, just look at the kids in the Rookie of the Year. Those 18/19 year olds aren't former amateur stand outs and aren't expected to become anything special. However it's hard enough to get the sensational talents any attention, no chance or getting people to read about Seiryu Toshikawa, Kohei Hasegawa or Yudai Tamagawa.

That's a great idea. Too bad it isn't adopted world-wide.

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

There's a lot of really good ideas that the JBC have that don't seem to be copied elsewhere. For example if an imported fighter is REALLY terrible they are banned from fighting in the country [they can be banned for missing weight, a "lethargic effort", or a lack of ability]. The Rookie of the Year is a brilliant idea. A promoter cannot match 2 of their fighters in a bout (essentially forcing promoters to work together), every fighter must be aligned to a gym (a promoter) and a Japanese licensed fighter must win either a Japanese or OPBF title before fighting for a world title on Japanese soil.

His twiggy legs could snap at any point!! It's easy to look good smashing the fuck out of some pads with maximum leverage. Eubank Jr had a video of him smashing one to bits. Didn't exactly translate into the ring vs Saunders though.

Well, at least we know he's got good balance (at least when not under pressure) fast hands, and a great left hook.

- I'm not a fan of the "elbow low" hook, but it's worked for a lot of American fighters, so I won't hold that against him. He sure does get his back foot into it.

Dying to see this guy fight now.

8st 7lbs? That kids barely 5st wet through.

Lets hope they dont put him in with Quigg or Frampton or he'll be in a box.

森岡ボクシングジム @MoriokaBoxing@asianboxing いつも応援ありがとうございます。11月下旬に大阪行う予定です。

試合会場も決まっていません。

Essentially says Maruta will debut in late November in Osaka. No other details can be confirmed at the moment. 6 months to go I guess! :D

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

Update-

Debut set for November 22nd in Osaka, will be a 6 rounder at 118 or 122. At the moment they've continued the talk about a world ranked opponent. They are looking to BREAK Kosei Tanaka's record and sound VERY confident of that being their target.

Maruta will be off for his 1 month US training camp in Friday. Expected to be sparring at a top US gym ( suspect it's the Wildcard).

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

Over the past few days Maruta has sparred with 140lb contender and Olympic champion Felix Diaz. Despite giving up around 20lbs Maruta was said to have held his own whilst working on his control and understanding of distance.

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

There is no blueprint !

It's rumored that Rigo & Frampton are both getting ready to retire & open a restaurant together. There's just no point in continuing.

BTW - They're going to call it "The Best Little Restaurant Nobody's Ever Heard Of." :haha:

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

Less than 3 weeks to go...could be the debut of the year or a hugely misjudged move from Morioka

Jason Canoy is completely unknown to me and boxrec lists a whole bunch of guys I've also never heard of. Is this my ignorance showing or is he just a nonentity? If the latter, a win for the debutant is going to be a bit shallow.

Re: Will this "pretty boy" be as good as hyped?

Should recognise:

Francisco and Loreto who he beat

He gave Oleydong a very tough one

Mancio went I to fight for the OPBF. Potapov is world ranked at the moment.

That settles it then - I've definitely lost touch with boxing.
