Joshua - Price set for a battle before the end of 2015, who wins?

Recommended Posts

ANTHONY JOSHUA and David Price are set for a battle of Britain showdown before the end of 2015. The Olympic medallists could clash as early as the autumn.

Price, 31, looked destined for a world-title challenge before two shock defeats by veteran American Tony Thompson in 2013. But the Liverpool heavyweight, who won bronze at the 2008 Olympics, has slowly rebuilt his career with four wins.

London 2012 gold medallist Joshua, 25, continued his steady professional career by extending his record to 11 wins and 11 knockouts with a third-round stoppage of American Jason Gavern on Saturday night.

Joshua faces another American on May 30 in London when he takes on the durable Kevin Johnson, and promoter Eddie Hearn will then look for one more fight in July before a possible clash with Price.

Joshua's win over Gavern in Newcastle was his first outing in five months after a stress fracture in his back. He was not troubled by the flabby American who looked nothing like a man in his 50th professional contest. Joshua had him down three times in the third before it was eventually stopped.

The Watford-born fighter said: "I was a bit ring-rusty and was not able to display all I've been doing at the gym. But once the momentum gets going I will be able to display some more shots, some more sharp shooting.

"If I can start pushing to British titles, European titles step by step, these fights won't really mean anything when I am experienced and a champion."

This is a perfect learning fight for Joshua and it should happen at the end of the year. It would show how far Joshua has came and I think Price would get more than 3 rounds out of Joshua.

I hope we get to see this fight in 2015.

I don't understand what team Price sees in this fight. It's just nuts.

Joshua may or may not be da' goods (Personally, I think he's destined to be a high-level gatekeeper) but his rep is huge, and he LOOKS like a dangerous fighter, and that's going to beat Price before the fight even begins: Price's big problem in't technique, or power, it's his head. Joshua is exactly the kind of opponent that will make Price fight defensively, with a low punch output. He'll pull back & freeze, like he did twice against Thompson, and that will be the end of David.

After the loss, he'll never recover.

--- This is the kind of fight Price needed all along, a good young prospect.

Make no mistake, Thompson would take out Joshua at this stage just like he took out Solis and Price. Price also had Thompson almost out before being taken out himself, and Joshua has yet to prove he's got as good a chin as Thompson. The fight may well be won by Joshua, but for none of the reasons you state, but since it ain't a certainty yet, it's all much ado over nothing.

No, it's technique - if he kept his hands up and could ride a shot better, he'd be less likely to get chinned.

Stamina, Stamina, Stamina. Problem with so many heavyweights. Joshua looks the goods slicing through crap in a fee rounds and so did Price, yet the teams for both allowed their fighter to get so far with no idea of how to pace themselves or understand what to do when tired. I know fighters don't get paid over time and fair enough if they can take a guy out in 3 rounds then it's great... But if they keep taking guys out in 3 rounds then it tends to say they are fighting garbage opposition who aren't helping them develop.

"Oh but it's only his x fight"... So what of its fight 10, 20 or 30 if it's worth having that stamina issue sorted immediately. Fury was lucky in his first stamina check (McDermott I) and learned a load from that, others should take note. Parker has also had his stamina check.

I personally see Price getting wasted in under five rounds. I think he rattles Joshua up a bit before he goes out, but this is going to be a very tense fight in which Joshua steps up and breaks the inferior man physically and mentally. Joshua should be scoring a knockout once he opens up, but he should still mind Pricey's right hand. We don't know a whole lot about Joshua's whiskers yet but this could leave us with some idea so long as Price can hold out past the opening 2-3 rounds.

On the other side of things, way to throw the former prospect to the dogs. It was bound to happen at some point after Price fell to Tony and showed minimal upside since. It would be some coincidence for Joshua to end in a similar way. They ought to be careful with the match-making until he gets past a guy like this, and, perhaps, someone with a better chin. As I said before, we can at least hope this fight will test his own.

Fight would sell plenty of tickets and it'll be a chance for us to see Joshua's chin tested. I'm all for it happening. I believe Price is announcing his next opponent soon and is rumoured to be a tougher challenge than his recent comeback fights.
