Amir Khan deserves an easier opponent than Brook - Do you agree?

Amir Khan deserves an easier opponent than Kell Brook for his next fight, says Paul Smith

Who will Amir Khan fight next? Paul Smith will not rule out Kell Brook but believes the boy from Bolton might take on a lesser-known opponent - and deserves a break...

I am sure Amir Khan and Kell Brook will fight. But in May or early June? I'm not sure.

Like anybody else I want to see them both get it on and I would love to see it announced - and if Amir doesn't make an announcement in the next couple of days, maybe it wil happen sooner rather than later.

But he has said inside 12 months and that is good to hear, at least. He has told us he will tell us who he is fighting next and of course, we all want it to be Kell

People though are probably expecting him to come out with a "nobody" and there is no shame in that or not yet taking that massive fight that Brook would be, because he has had two tough fights back-to-back - against Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander - and indeed has a great resume over the last 10 fights as well.

"It will, dare I say, do Amir no harm at all fighting someone at a lesser level."

Paul Smith

It will, dare I say, do Amir no harm at all fighting someone at a lesser level, so to speak. It is not going to be a complete nobody, it will be someone in and around that welterweight top 10, I think. And it will be exciting whoever he is fighting.

I am an Amir Khan fan and always have been. Yes, people will say I am biased because I train in his gym but I knew him back in the amateurs and what is there not to like about him if you know the lad well?

He does get a lot of bad press, for being flash or arrogant and sometimes he does come out with the wrong thing, but if you all saw the work he does, the charity stuff he does, you would all change your opinion of him. He is a generous, good lad.

Regardless of all that, ability-wise what is there not to like. He is an exciting fighter who can box and let's be honest, he is rarely in a dull fight is he? And if he is, it is because it is one-sided - in his favour. And add to that vulnerability about him it all adds to the excitement.

Kell Brook has accepted Amir Khan’s winner takes all fight and thinks it’s just more money for him.

And I am sure even if he did go for Kell at Wembley in June, don't worry too much about Amir at the moment in terms of fitness. He has gone out to the States to start work with Virgil Hunter but he always has a sort of camp before the camp, so to speak, and he will be doing that whatever is going on. And he will of course, be looking for a fight.

Personally I would love to see him fight Keith Thurman, someone like that and then Kell, but I can't see that happening in May or June. I just see Amir taking on somone in and around the top 10. Win, build it up.

The one I think can be made is Adrien Broner. He should go for that becaause that is one he can win. Mind you I am not sure that can happen this quickly because the last time we saw Broner he was huge. I am not sure he can make it for May.

Call me crazy, but I think someone may be waaaay overrating Kell Brook right now ! He didn't look great last week, as much as Jo Jo Dan looked ridiculous.

Brook is OK, his fundamentals are solid & he has power, but where is the spark? Where is the killer instinct?

I'm still a big fan of Kahn, and I think the has the right attitude & dedication now to become the complete fighter that he never was before. That hand speed will always be a major factor, and now with his improved balance & footwork, he should have more power as well.

##### A qick disclaimer: I'm a huge Keith thurman fan, probably to the point that I don't always see things 100% clearly. ######

- but IMO, Thurman is by FAR a more dangerous opponent for Kahn than Brook. Even H2H, I rate Thurman over Brook, as he's faster, and IMO more aggressive. But he's also more dangerous in terms of style matchups. While both Thurman and Brook give up 2" in reach to Kahn, Thurman throws from more angles than Brook, and so can better neutralize that reach advantage. Thurman's faster hand speed (IMO) will help him take advantage of any split-second mistakes that Kahn will likely still make once in a while.

And last, IMO (more study needed, perhaps) Thurman keeps a higher consistent punch output than Brook. Kahn is still improving, and I get the sense that he's still thinking a little too much in the ring. With a fighter constantly in his face, as might be the case with Thurman, Kahn won't have time to think much, and so will likely fall back on his old patterns, possibly with disastrous effect.

Of course, I could be wrong. :haha:

Well the rumors are that Broner will be next... with Adrien apparently tweeting something to that effect. Not exactly an easier opponent next then, if true.

Who would make a good "easy" opponent for Khan anyway? I think Khan's camp will always be worried about another Breidis Prescott moment and are doing all they can to snag the big money Pacquiao or Mayweather fight, or the biggest payday after them - which kinda leaves out most easy opponents. Perhaps Ricky Burns in Upton Park?

Khan does not DESERVE anything, he gotta keep proving himself and what better way to do so than fighting the other best British welterweight?? I think Thurman beats them both but he'd have more problems beating Brook than china-chin Khan.

--- Broner is one of the easier fights for any top fighter who can box or crack and Khan can do a bit of both.

Yeah, Burns would be much easier but I doubt Khan would go down lower than 145 lbs which might keep him from those fights.

So, Algieri then... Khan handles him easily I should think.

--- Algieri is much taller and rangier with an awkward boxing style guaranteed to make Khan look like stink.

I've no doubt he's stronger as well not to mention smarter not that I want to damn Algieri with faint praise. Khan being the money fighter can probably expect the ugly decision, but he might also get beat as he ain't that durable.

 You REALLY can't stand the guy, can you? :lmao:

He can't, but on the plus side Paul Smith knows who Scott is and can't stand him either, so at least it's not one-way traffic!

I don't mind this fight though, largely because Algieri's trainer is one of the funniest men in boxing.

Well, Smith started it, so it was mostly Paul Smith behaving like a berk. I found the link to Scott's article to give the background. It caused a bit of a sensation at the time - Smith was threatening to sue Rob, Bud, the forum, anyone he ever met on Twitter etc.
