Re: Audley Harrison has announced his retirement

 Toodle-oo! His career? Just one big zero. Scored a few ok wins but fell FAR from what was expected of him. Really, I don't know why the man waited so long to turn pro...he was 29! What did he think, that he'd just steamroll over everyone?

Re: Audley Harrison has announced his retirement

I feel sorry for him in the end - I started out a fan, then became progressively more irritated by the endless promises of "This time it will all be different."

But to end up after all this time with brain injuries and your finances no better than when you started, is absolutely tragic.

On paper, he's achieved a hell of a lot - gold medalist, British Champion, Commonwealth Champion, European Champion, plus two Prizefighters and a world title shot. I think most fighters would take that lot if you offered it at the start of their careers.

Unfortunately, context is king, and in context only the Olympic gold retains its lustre, the rest having very large caveats attached due to issues with Harrison's performance or that of his opponent.

I wish him well in retirement, and hope his injuries are temporary.

'A-Force' has left the sport of boxing, as a fighter. Due inpart to health and financial reasons. Is looking to train/manage fighters.

What are your overall thoughts on his career?

--- Just a temporary rift in the continuum of time that will correct itself when Sir Oddly returns to unify the heavy division and claim P4P #1 status for all time!

He should become a motivational speaker "Yes I Can".

The amount of times I have listened to him before a fight and almost fallen for it, he could convince alot of people.

He had talent but a weak chin and over thought his fights, which often meant turning in a negative, safety first display. Though not many can claim to have beaten Sonny Liston even if it was the Dutch version. :haha:

Re: Audley Harrison has announced his retirement

Good riddance.

He was very frustrating to watch, as he had so much potential yet just failed to capitalize on it. Something mental was lacking, and, until the end, he could never add that certain element he needed to be a world-class heavyweight. With that said, I wish him luck. I hate to see any fighter leave this sport with such damage done to their body. Truthfully, he should have retired after that loss to Haye, or at least after David Price destroyed him. He should've known that his window of opportunity had closed. I can't fault him for that, though. He wanted his chance, and few fighters know when their time is up. It's certain to be even more difficult when you've spent so long in the sport and found success, yet, feel like you've barely started.

Well wishes, Audley. Please stay out of the boxing ring.

It took him this long to realize it? Most of us knew this at least several years ago.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Huge props to Audley, of course, for a stellar amateur career, and for at least giving it his best in the pros.

If nothing else, he was never afraid to face the top guys in the division.
