Friday night at the Resorts Casino and Hotel, USBA junior middleweight champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis (22-2-1, 13KOs) will look to continue his rise to the top of the junior middleweight division when he squares off against the rugged Cuban southpaw Giorbis Barthelemy (24-8-2, 9KOs) in the ten round main event of the evening.

Ennis recently defended the USBA title the USBA title with a scintillating twelve round majority decision victory over fellow Philadelphian “King” Gabriel Rosado (16-5, 9KOs). The win catapulted Ennis to number nine in the IBF ratings and things were looking up for the USBA champ and rising junior middleweight sensation. Ennis was ready to face the top brass of the junior middleweight division. However things are not always as it may seem as fights against top opponents have fallen out during negotiations.

Ennis and his co-manager Moz Gonzalez of E & M Management sat down and spoke to FightNews.com about the upcoming bout and the challenge to get a top notch fighter to fight the USBA champion.

Derek How do you feel as you approach your fight on Friday night against Giorbis Barthelemy?

I’m feeling Good, Working hard and staying ready.

Describe your boxing style for those who haven’t seen you fight?

I am a boxer who can mix it up and adjust to whatever my opponent does in the ring.

What do you know about your opponent Giorgis Barthelemy?

I don’t know anything about him. I was originally training to fight a southpaw who is coming (Deandre Latimore) now I hear I am going to fight a southpaw who is running. Whatever he chooses to do I will be ready for it. I have been sparring with Kaseem Wilson who is a southpaw and getting good work. We work regularly with guys like Harry Yorgey, Farah Ennis and Demetrius Hopkins.

You have had several negotiations and fights fall through recently. Do you have anything you would like to say about the unfortunate fight fallouts and about the difficulty of getting a top ten opponent to fight you?

I will fight anybody Moz and Eddie put in front of me. I just hope somebody gives me the chance to fight for the title:

Moz Gonzalez: It has been difficult. We were in negotiations to fight Cornelius Bundrage for the world title, but there were certain things that Don King was asking for that we just could not give him. We were ready to fight Bundrage. Derek wanted to fight him. He was excited about the bout, but there were demands that we weren’t comfortable with. If we would have met in the middle somewhere, the deal would have been done. We thought as Derek’s management team that it was best to turn down the deal and move on to the next guy. We then went back and forth negotiating the numbers for about two weeks with Deandre Latimore. They finally agreed on the contract and we sent it them for the fight. The next day I get a call and he has the flu. We are not going to have him sit. We already had the March 4th date, so we were able to find a good replacement in Giorbis Barthelemy.

What do you think sets you apart from all the other junior middleweights out there?

I am smart. I can box when I want to. I can move in the ring and punch when I want to.

Do you have anything to say to your fans out there as you approach your fight on Friday night?

It is going to be an exciting fight. I am never in a boring fight, so come on out and have a good time and support.

In closing what would you like to say to the other top junior middleweights in the world.

I am coming and ready to fight. Please give me the opportunity to fight one of the top fighters. Just give me a shot. I am ready for anybody; all I need is a chance.
