Exclusive - David Haye close to deal to fight Alexander Povetkin

BoxRec News can reveal that very positive negotiations are taking place with regards to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye defending his title against 2004 Olympic gold medallist Alexander Povetkin on May 21st.

The 31-year-old Russian is 21-0 and the number two ranked challenger with the WBA behind Uzbek Ruslan Chagaev who, reportedly, would have difficulties being approved to box in the UK due to a former diagnosis of hepatitis.

Haye and Povetkin have one thing in common – an intense dislike of Wladimir Klitschko after both men failed to share a ring with the Ukrainian due to contractual difficulties. Povetkin was all set to face Klitschko last year but withdrew leaving a rather bemused ‘Dr Steelhammer’ putting his fist up to a cardboard cut out of Povetkin at a press conference.

In the Russian publication ‘Arguments and Facts’ (translated by Ruslan Chikov of Boxing Scene), Povetkin said, "An important step towards achieving the major goals of my career would be for me to fight with Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. We had already discussed the fight with Wladimir, but we wouldn't accept the terms of the contract. Klitschko wants to decide everything for you: the hotel in which I live, where and what to eat, and even what gloves I can wear during the fight. Why? By what right? Am I a slave to the Klitschko brothers? Maybe he even wants to arrange my breakfast menu? Boxing against Klitschko is primarily an event which is organized under him. But the event should also be honest and fair to all."

Sound familiar?

Povetkin’s most recent outing was a ticking over bout against Nicolai Firtha in Germany which he won on points over ten after sustaining an injury to his right hand in the early part of the fight. He is now being trained by American fight guru Teddy Atlas.

The Russian is promoted by Sauerland Events which makes the contest about as easy to make as such things are these days. Hayemaker Promotions and Sauerland Events have ties arising from Haye’s victory over their man Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg back in November 2009.

Kalle Sauerland said, “Haye versus Chagaev would be a massive fight, probably the fight of the year in the heavyweight division. But it is not up to us. It´s a matter of the BBBoC and the WBA to see whether Chagaev will be able to fight Haye. If not, Povetkin is ready to step in. He is fit, willing and able and more than qualified.”

Haye has been close to agreeing deals with Mormeck and Chagaev in the past few weeks, who will he be close to inking a deal with in a fortnight?

Close to signing for Mormeck? All I recall is a badly translate Booth interview in Paris.

Chagaev's medical papers have to goto the BBB of C and have been requested, if they pass him fit then the fight will be on.

Povetkin vs Haye negotiations started weeks ago according to Klitschko's advisor Boente.

The rumour was that it was a done and done deal (Mormeck) according to Mormecks teams

The BBBofC don't need Chagaevs papers until the fight has been won on purse bids with the UK as the venue (the BBBofC cannot stop Chagaev forcing the fight to be fought in Germany, Russia or anywhere else). Which is why this is all very murky.

I think thats Mormecks team trying to get the name out there as an opponent.

Booth said a few weeks ago that he'd asked Team Chagaev to send over the medical documents to see that ruslan is fit to fight. Agree that doesn't involve the BBB of C at this stage. Can't see why anything is murky, negotiations or bids should be ordered soon.

Mind anything involving the WBA isn't clearcut though they did state early on what they expected.

Booth was seen talking to Mormecks team which it's self helps fuel the fire

Booth doesn't to my knowledge have any right to ask for the documents (I might be wrong but it's not down to Booth to dertermine whether Chagaev is fit to fight in Germany...) It's murky because Purse bids should be called before negotiating with ANYONE. The WBA are likely going to let Haye fight whoever ad open up a new super title lets admit it.

Can't see any problem with asking to see proof that a fighter is ok to fight. Haven't read anything that Chagaev was unwilling and this was some time ago.

Booth probably travels on freebies listening to many offers, a perk of the job. With the current situation it seems natural to explore all possibilities.

He's not asking for proof that he's ok to fight, he's asking to see whether or not he's fine to fight in the UK and Finland >_>, a big difference to being "ok to fight".

A perk of the job it may be but, it may also have been an attempt to lure McIntosh into a fight with Groves (European LHW title is a route to "avoid" but not "duck" DeGale), but Hayes camp never denied the rumours did they?

I hope Haye v Povotkin comes off and we get to see it. The kind of shot in the arm the division is craving. As Gerry Cooney said recently-the folks are getting sick of the boring Klitchko fights. No heavyweights seem to want to go to the body he stated.

I get the feeling this year is the year of upsets, shocks and surprises with the big men. Wlad v Chisora, Vitali v Solis could get real interesting.

The fight won't be in Germany it'll be in the UK if it happens, Booth is sensibly checking on his medical condition to see if its viable - wheres the problem in that?

Why would Booth deny or rule anything out? Is he there for Haye or Groves - its mainly assumptions and certainly not what you claimed earlier "Haye has been close to agreeing deals with Mormeck".
