Wlad: Take it or leave it

Klitschko insists he still plans on fighting Haye on July 2

Wladimir Klitschko has reiterated his plans to fight David Haye in a unification showdown on July 2.

Haye had criticised the Ukrainian after he opted to put his IBF and WBO titles on the line against Dereck Chisora first.

That means Haye, the WBA champion, will now have to take on mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev before any potential fight with Klitschko can take place.

However Klitschko insists he remains focused on taking on Haye once he has dealt with Chisora.

Klitschko said: "I think after talking so much nonsense (Haye) has to show up in the ring. He has been trying to be smart but eventually he put himself in a corner.

"He's talking about legacy - I don't see the legacy with him, to be honest with you.

"I think that it's not only my opinion but the opinion of a lot of fans. I know the British fans are looking forward to this fight and I'm looking forward to satisfying as well the British fans and to fight David Haye.

"I'm right here and I'm confirming that July 2, as I've said before, that's the date for the fight. Either David Haye takes it or he just leaves the whole thing there.

Confirmed

"We were agreed on the money, so that we split everything 50-50 and of course there is a lot of money to make, but money is not the issue right now.

"As I said, I can confirm the date - July 2 - and the answer from David Haye was 'I don't want you to fight before' and however. The date is confirmed. Germany or the UK? It doesn't matter."

Haye, though, insists that it is "impossible" for Klitschko to face him after fighting Chisora.

"Fight fans just want to see the best against the best - if only it was that simple," Haye said.

"Very rarely in boxing do you get a situation where you have all the pieces of the puzzle, all the politics have been smoothed over.

"Then all of sudden he announces he is fighting Chisora, knowing I have to then fight Chagaev.

"To then fight me after is impossible - it is a shame he has now shown his true colours.

"He is scared of getting knocked out and does not want to lose, fighting people on a good run.

"What is wrong with now? Nothing. It does not make sense, especially after all the public campaign to get me in the ring.

"This would be a once-in-a-lifetime fight. Once I retire, people will always ask him 'why did you not fight David Haye?' and he will have to live with that.

"If it does not happen now, it never will."

He is lying. Money is the only thing that matters in prizefighting.

However that is all he's lying about. DH is the one with the excuses.

He's saying they've agreed the money, which even Haye said they had, so it's obviously not the issue - they're arguing over his decision to fight Chisora a couple of months beforehand.

Also, all this business about Haye now has to fight Chagaev - so far as i'm aware, he doesn't - if he signs the unification fight, Chagaev can be sidelined for the moment. It doesn't have to be Wlad's next defence, just signed.

Gav-

I seem to remember that when he was setting up the Audley fight, it was mentioned that he had till sometime in March to agree to meet Chagaev for his mandatory. The BBBofC agreeing to let him fight was always a question mark, but I thought the WBA was pretty clear on the timeframe.....but then again, are they ever really clear on anything? These are the people who've been known to have four belt holders in a single division.

Well if he hasn't got anything by way of a unification scheduled by sometime in march, yeah, he has to give chagaev the shot. However, he hasn't signed for chagaev yet and the WBA rules simply say you're allowed to ask to defer your mandatory if you've got a unification fight arranged. If Haye signs today to fight Wlad ion June/July, he's still entitled to ask for deferral -- the fact Wlad is fighting in the mean time is irrelevant, because obviously he's not beholden to the WBA.

I have honestly believed from day one, that David Haye's scheme was to move up to Heavyweight ( when he saw how shitty the division was ) fight all the bugs and earwigs in the division whilst constantly talking about the Klitch brothers, with no intention of ever facing either of them.

Then retire, and get stupid British fans to accept that the Klitch brothers were scared to fight him.

Thanks, Gav, I wasn't aware of that......so, the WBA has Rules, huh? When did this happen? grin// Seriously, thanks for the info, I had thought that only applied to someone they'd designated a Super Champion because they already owned two belts(not to be confused with that they call their "Regular" Champion).
