Faulks
Tony Dodson closes in on European light-heavyweight title shot by Philip Kirkbride, Liverpool Echo TONY DODSON is on course for a shot at the European light-heavyweight title. The Garston Warrior is close to securing a fight against champion Danny McIntosh, with only a couple of details to be ironed out. Norwich man McIntosh – who won the belt from Frenchman Thierry Karl on January 22 – is said to be keen on facing Dodson (26-6-1) in his voluntary defence. Sky television are also understood to be eager for the contest to happen. Promoters Matchroom Sport will be putting the night together with Sheffield- where McIntosh trains in the Ingle gym - most likely to be the host city. The ECHO understands Dodson is confident the fight will be made but there remains issues still to be resolved. One stumbling block is the fight date, with McIntosh believed to want the match-up sooner rather than later, while Dodson needs time to recover from last weekend’s Prizefighter. The 30-year-old was building momentum in the elimination tournament at The Olympia in London on Saturday night only to be halted by cuts above his right eye. A first laceration was picked up in his quarter-final points win over Michael Banbula before a second in his semi-final TKO win over Menay Edwards. Dodson was ready to meet Travis Dickinson in the final for £32,000 but ringside doctors said he was unfit to continue. Ten weeks is likely to be sufficient time for Dodson to have healed and be back in shape for challenge of McIntosh (13-1).
