ROBIN REID has been lined up for a surprise comeback when Prizefighter hits Liverpool.

The return of the super-middleweights will take place at the city’s Olympia in March and former WBC champion Reid is a target for the organisers.

Already signed up for the one-night elimination tournament are former British ruler Tony Quigley and Commonwealth title challenger Carl Dilks.

Speculation of Runcorn’s Reid coming out of his three year retirement have gathered pace in recent weeks and the ECHO understands promoters Matchroom have been in discussions with the ‘Grim Reaper’ for some time.

Sky television are also keen for as many big name fighters in the eight-man competition as possible.

Despite strong rumours, Reid did not sign to appear in the light-heavyweight tournament which takes place in London this weekend, but Matchroom are eyeing the Olympic bronze medallist in the hope of filling the night with 12st Merseyside talent on Wednesday, March 23.

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport managing director said: “We are delighted to be bringing the event to the fighting city of Liverpool – there’s a huge pool of talent in the area and the fans have a big passion for boxing.

“It’s going to be a special night with a special line-up and Liverpool fight fans are in for a treat.”

With city punchers Quigley and Dilks already secured, the signing of Reid would add even greater spark to an already explosive format of boxing.

Reid last fought in November 2007 when he lost a British title tilt against Carl Froch but can lay claim to having once owned the IBO and WBF straps in a career which started in 1993.

Having battled with Joe Calzaghe, Brian Magee and Jeff Lacy, the 39-year-old finished his professional record with a slate of 39-6-1, scoring 27 knockouts en route.

A close friend of former stablemate Tony Dodson, Reid will be ringside at The Olympia in London to cheer on the ‘Garston Warrior’ in the 16th edition of Prizefighter on Saturday night.

For Dilks (14-3), Prizefighter in March represents a second shot in a tournament which thwarted his earlier advances.

Despite having his arm raised after the light-heavy semi-final against Darren Stubbs in February 2009, the result was reversed leaving Dilks with unfinished business.

“I’m glad to get a second crack of the whip and the shot at some decent fights again,” said Dilks.

“I definitely have some unfinished business in this tournament so it was an easy decision to accept the offer.

“Robin Reid is getting on a bit now but is sure to still be a class operator and have a granite chin.

“However if he was to enter and we fought then I would like to think age would be a factor.

“It promises to be an exciting night and a great atmosphere with Scousers knocking 10 bells out of each other.”

Tickets are on sale now from Matchroom on 01277 359900 – unreserved £30, ringside £50, VIP £100.
