Danny McIntosh goes into the lion's den this weekend when he heads off to France to try and bag the vacant European light-heavyweight title. 'The Mac Man' faces Gallic dangerman Thierry Karl at the Palais des sports Marcel Cerdan and what's sure to be a hostile Parisian crowd on Saturday. The reigning English light-heavyweight champion insists he is unfazed but knows getting a decision on foreign soil will prove difficult. "I'm going to have to knock him out, I know that," the 12-1 (6) Norwich switch-hitter told Boxing News last week and truth be known he'll definitely have his work cut out winning this on points. McIntosh certainly has the tools for the job. He's fast and awkward and despite just six stoppages on his record he can also whack a bit. The only blemish on his record is a stoppage defeat to Nathan Cleverly but given what 'Clev' has gone onto achieve (the Welshman remains unbeaten and should fight for the WBO world title next) there is certainly no shame in that. McIntosh knows though that at the age of 30, if he is to get anywhere in the sport, he needs to pull a win out of the bag this weekend. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that he might but the layers don't fancy his chances with Karl chalked up as a 4/6 jolly. The Frenchman is four years younger but arguably more experienced having turned pro two years before Danny in 2003. He's had 32 fights in that time and won 28 of those. Karl is a tall guy who has a classic European style in as much that he is up on his toes, hands held high and pumping out a stiff left jab for the most part. He can be a little clumsy defensively when he comes forward and McIntosh will be hoping to take advantage of that but in truth neither man is that difficult to hit. As a result, I don't see the fight going the distance and while the Englishman could pull off the shock a more likely outcome is that he is broken down in front of partisan home support and stopped inside 10 rounds. Elsewhere this weekend there is another European title scrap in Doncaster as Jamie McDonnell defends his bantamweight crown against Belgium's Stephane Jamoye. McDonnell enjoyed a fabulous 2010 as he claimed both British and European titles at 8st 6lbs. Last January he beat slick Londoner Ian Napa on a split to win the British belt before travelling to France and upsetting Jerome Arnould with a thrilling stoppage win in the 10th to annex the European crown. Four months later he was at it again as he stopped Rodrigo Bracco to defend his Euro belt at the Doncaster Dome, the venue where Saturday's bout will take place. He is a heavy 2/7 favourite to retain in South Yorkshire this weekend but should have his hands full against Jamoye. The 21-year-old has lost just once in 20 pro starts and that was via a disputed decision to Tomoki Kameda for the WBC youth world bantamweight title in Mexico last year. Jamoye throws a hell of a lot of leather and although he'll have a significant disadvantage in terms of height on the night he's tenacious and will look to mix it up on the inside. McDonnell is decent but I don't feel he justifies such heavy favouritism in this one with manager Dennis Hobson admitting to the press this week that he would "rather this one had come six or 12 months down the line". Karl was winning the fight as Mcintosh clowning too much. Karl is one of the most cumbersome fighters I've seen - misses with alot of punches. Looked like a Karl win but McIntosh Ko'd him late on. Joe Ko Posted January 22, 2011 Share Posted January 22, 2011 Thought Jamoye would have bit to mcu hfor Mcdonnell but he has really good stamina and a big heart, was a very good performance. As for Macintosh I saw the fight from 5th and was wierd the ref looked like he had been paid and Macintosh was taking big punches and show boating, then he has good 10th and a big 11th and stops him.
