Braehmer vs Cleverly Negotiations Ordered By The WBO

by: Frank Warren

Nathan Cleverly will fight for the WBO light-heavyweight title next.

That's because the WBO have ordered that negotiations should begin between Cleverly's camp and that of German champion Jurgen Braehmer.

Braehmer was due to meet WBA champion Beibut Shumenov earlier this month, but missed the fight through illness.

That appeared to be a blow for Cleverly. It was feared he would have to wait until the outcome of a rearranged fight between Braehmer and Shumenov before getting his chance.

But now if Braehmer decides to fight the Kazak, he will be stripped, and Cleverly will challenge for the vacant title.

Braehmer's other option is to defend against Cleverly.

Warren tried to bring Braehmer to the UK in December to meet Cleverly in Liverpool.

And he will be confident he can tempt the 32-year-old to Britain, possibly in March.

I don't see why the fight should be in Britain, though politics will probably dictate again...

I don't really rate Braehmer but going by Cleverley's most recent outing, I think he gets knocked out.

He really struggled. It may have just been a blip, and I'd like him to do well, but I'm not convinced by Nathan either.

I can picture him being knocked out in the mid rounds.

I'd like to see Nathan start using his height and reach and boxing skills in fights rather than trying to pummel opponents into submission. Cleverly is not a big hitter but has the skills. I take no notice of the last fight as it was an awkward opponent on short notice - a great learning fight for a young fighter.

Lennox Lewis looked bad a couple of times on his way up - Dan Murphy and Levi Billups springs too mind. (Though Billups was a tough customer and built like a tank)

Braehmer to me seems just like a belt holder, its a step up for Cleverly but I think he can win it well.
