Wheelchair Posted December 24, 2010 Share Posted December 24, 2010 Australian middleweight Daniel Geale registered the most impressive win in Australian boxing during 2010 when he performed a boxing clinic to chop down former world champion Roman Karmazin in twelve one sided rounds to become IBF #1 when referee Pat Russell saved the game Russian from further punishment at 2:30 of the round. Karmazin was coming off being awarded a disputed draw over twelve rounds against IBF middleweight champion Sebastian Sylvester in June but he was totally outclassed against the highly skilled Australian. Sylvester will defend against Mehdi Bouada (21-3, 10 KOs) in Germany on January 22, 2011 and the winner of that contest will defend against Geale in early 2011. Geale had stopped the classy light heavyweight Kariz Kariuki in eleven rounds in June on Grange Gym Promotion. Geale is trained by Graham Shaw and managed by Bill Treacy. Former WBA, WBC, IBF champion Vic Darchinyan was in one of the best fights for 2010 when he dropped a split decision to Abner Mares in December with a massive world wide audience in a SHOWTIME bantamweight tournament in Washington, USA. Darchinyan will clash with former IBF bantamweight champion Yohnny Perez next. Darchinyan said he was unhappy with the referee but congratulated Mares on a great win. Darchinyan holds stoppage wins over recently crowned IBF super bantamweight champion Cristiian Mijares and the tough Mexican Jorge Arce. he is managed by Elias Nassar and promoted by Gary Shaw. Danny Green defended the IBO cruiserweight title by stopping former world champion Manny Siaca in four rounds in April and backed up in July scored a first round stoppage of Paul Briggs in what was a controversial bout when it was determined later that Briggs was not medically fit to take the fight. Green made amends by taking on tough American B. J. Flores in November who extended him over twelve action rounds with the “Green Machine” being awarded a clear decision. Flores and Green could be in a rematch in 2011. Green is trained by Angelo Hyder and managed by Justin Monalikos. Former WBO interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis started 2010 in great form when he registered an impressive three round TKO of Englishman Kevin Mitchell who was favored by the bookmakers to defeat the tough Australian when they clashed in London in May. Katsidis got the opportunity to challenge Juan Manuel Marquez for the WBA and WBO lightweight titles in November in Las Vegas and had the Mexican on the canvas in round two from a left hook bomb but was in trouble in round nine when referee Kenny Bayliss called off the fight. Former IBO lightweight champion Lenny Zappavigna scored the best win of his career when he scored a round one stoppage of Ji Hoon Kim in October in Sydney when referee Wayne Kelly stopped the bout at 1:41 when Kim had been on the canvas and in no condition to continue. Zappavigna became the IBF #1 contender and will now meet IBF 135 pound champion Miguel Vasquez early in 2011 for the championship. In March Zappavigna outscored Fernando Angulo over twelve at the Rancho Mirage, California, USA to win the IBO title. Zappa is trained by Tommy Mecure and managed by Gary Shaw. Former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine suffered a loss to Garth Wood but scored wins over Ryan Waters, Carlos Jerez and Robert Medley in 2010. Mundine has been nominated Australia’s most unpopular sportsman but has been the biggest money earner in Australian boxing history with an estimated wealth of between $18 million and $25 million. Anthony’s father, Tony, boxed 96 fights and met the best in the world including Carlos Monzon and Emile Griffith and made approximately $700,000. Former IBF junior welterweight champion and IBO welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou travelled to his homeland of South Africa and defended the IBO title successfully by outscoring Bongani Mwelase over twelve rounds in Gauteng. In December Ndou moved up to the junior middleweight division and challenged highly regarded Mexican Saul Alvarez for the WBC Silver belt in Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Nodou gave Alvarez a tough fight but lost a points decision with Harold Volbrecht and Grantlee Kieza in his corner. World rated Wale Omotoso continued on his winning way by scoring a KO win in seven over New Zealand’s Ray Musson in February and then followed that with a stoppage of Kiatchai Singwancha in four rounds in May. Tough Argentinian welterweight Juan Alberto Godoy was halted in four one sided rounds. Trained and managed by Murray Thomson, Nigerian born Omotoso is slated to clash with former IBF junior welterweight challenger Naoufell Ben Rabah in March 2011 in a pay-per-view contest. Omotoso is chasing Jan Zaveck for the IBF 147 crown and has excellent chance of being successful. Former IBO champion Sakio Bika challenged Andre Ward unsuccessfully over twelve rounds with the WBA 168 pound title up for grabs in November losing via decision. Australian based Cameroon born Bika has met the very best including Joe Calzaghe and Markus Beyer. Bika’s profile was lifted in 2007 when he captured the Contender series by stopping Jaidon Codrington in eight action rounds in one of the best fights for that year. Bika still one of the most dangerous 168 pounders in the world. Australian 2010 super middleweight contender champion Garth Wood registered the biggest upset in Australian boxing when he stopped former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine in five rounds in Sydney. Wood was having his twelfth fight. Mundine had boiled down to junior middleweight poundage and was rated WBA #2 in that division. Mundine’s decision to fight at 154 pounds in recent bouts is one of the major reasons for his demise. Wood is limited in skill but big on power as he also defeated former world rated Kariz Kariuki in 2010. Wood is trained by Billy Hussein. World rated middleweight Sam Soliman is chasing a shot at the IBF 160 pound crown and he registered stoppage wins over Shannon McMahon and Pradeep Singh in 2010. Soliman is remembered for giving Winky Wright the fight of his life in 2005 and defeating world rated Enrique Ornelas and Fernado Zuniga in USA fights in 2005 and 2006. He has won and lost to Sakio Bika in tough fights. Sammy is trained by Dave Hedgecock and managed by David Stanley. Sam is expected to meet Benjamin Simon in February in Germany for IBF#2 position Former world title challenger Naoufell Ben Rabah returned to Australian rings in 2010 to easily outscore Solomon Egberime over eight rounds and also stop Rey Anton Olarte in four. Ramadan Weriu was stopped in round one and Eusebio Baluarte was knocked out in three rounds in Jarkarta. Ben Rabah lost a disputed decision to Juan Urango in IBF title bout in 2006. Lovemore Ndou stopped Ben Rabah in eleven rounds in 2007. He is trained and managed by Craig Christian. Former IBO world super featherweight champion Billy Dib is rated IBF #5 and he kept busy in 2010 by scoring wins over Indonesian Carlos Lopez by KO in six rounds in March and followed that with stoppage of Filipino Reynaldo Belandres also in six rounds in April. Thai Vacharakrit Senahan was blasted out inside a round in June and in October former world title challenger Ceferino Dario Labarda of Argetina went out in six rounds. Tough Filipino Jack Asis was stopped in four rounds in October and Aussie Mick Shaw went out in six. Dib is chasing IBF and WBA titles. Dib has great supporter in Shane Mosley who has been ringside for his fight in Australia. He is trained by Billy Hussein and managed by Nathan Butler. WBO rated Samuel Colomban stopped former IBF lightweight champion Phillip Holiday in eleven rounds in his best win for 2010. He also stopped Junmar Dulog in four rounds outpointed Ade Alfons in six and scored a second round knockout over Jamed Jalarante. He scored a twelve round split decision over Steve Heremaia in November. Sam is trained by Dave Hedgecock and managed by Brian Amatruda. Australian based South African heavyweight Pieter Cronjie lost in South Africa to anton Nell by KO in March but came back in October to defeat former Australian champion Colin Wilson by stoppage in four rounds and in December scored a second round KO of tough cruiserweight Oscar Siale. Cronjie now guided by Perth businessmen Sam and Daniel Davidson. IBF #6 rated super middleweight Les Sherrington had a very good year in 2010 by scoring impressive wins over American Rubin Williams who was stopped in four rounds. Williams had boxed the best including Andre Ward, Allan Green and Chris Henry. Sherrington followed that win with a clear cut decision over Nader Hamdan in December. Managed by Jamie Myer Sherrington is headed for more international success in 2011. World rated junior middleweight Robert Medley IBF #13 scored a clear cut decision over American Jason LeHoullier in October and gave Anthony Mundine problems over ten rounds losing a decision. Mundine had agreed to come in at 154 pounds but came in heavy. Medley agreed to spot Mundine weight so the fight could go ahead. Medley also stopped Sergio Leonides in three rounds and Aussie Gary Comer in five rounds. He is trained by Graham Shaw and managed by Bill Treacy and has the IBF championship in his sights. World rated Alex Leapai is Samoan born heavyweight but based in Queensland under the guidance of Noel Thornberry. WBO #14 Leapai scored stoppage wins over American heavyweights Travis Walker in four rounds and Owen Beck in six rounds. Walker gave Ruslan Chagaev a very tough fight after the Leapai bout and Beck had been in the ring with WBA champ Nikolay Valuev also Monte Barrett and Ray Austin. American Darnell Wilson was clearly outpointed over eight rounds in Leapai’s most recent bout. Former world rated junior welterweight Ranee Ganoy has the distinction of being the best pound for pound puncher in Australia and was in action during 2010 scoring KO wins over Decha Kokietgym in two rounds and Guillermo Mosquera also in two rounds. Mosquera holds a win over the former IBF champion Lovemore Ndou. Australasian based Filipino is looking for big name fighters in 2011. He is trained by Graham Shaw and managed by Bill Treacy. Former world heavyweight challenger WBA #9 Kali Meehan lost a WBA eliminator to Ruslan Chagaev by twelve rounds points decision in Germany in May but rebounded to score a clear twelve round decision over well credentialled Evans Quinn in September in a nationally televised contest. Meehan has defeated several rated heavyweights including Davarryl Williamson who he stopped in six rounds in Madison Square Garden, New York for the WBO/NABO titles. Will Tomlinson 130 pounder scored five wins in 2010 and now is rated WBO #4. Wins were twelve round points decision over Oscar Bravo a four round disqualification over Ramon Elizer Esperanza. Ely Ray was stopped in eight rounds and Rey Labao was outscored over twelve rounds. Tomlinson trains at the BHS Gym in Blacktown. WBO rated lightweight Steven Wills defeated debutant Sanatanong Paiwan and prelim boxer over six rounds of his only bouts of 2010. The best win of his career came in 2009 when he stopped Chad Bennett in four rounds. Trainer Angelo Hyder. WBO #6 Joel Brunker scored five wins in 2010 over Manu Emary in five rounds, Dianver Orcales in nine rounds , Ernie Gonzalez in seven rounds, Carlos Lopez in two rounds and Robert Lerio in eight rounds. He is managed by Angelo Di Carlo. WBA #13 Joel Casey scored upset win over Tim Bell in 2010 in Melbourne to find himself rated with WBA. Casey also stopped Kashif Mumtaz in four rounds in October 2010. WBO #15 Ryan Waters got the biggest pay day of his career when he squared off against Anthony Mundine being stopped in ten rounds in September. Waters scored wins over Elvin Marbun in eight rounds and outpointed Gary comer over twelve rounds. Waters, who has showed himself to be a smart businessman – promotes himself and does financially better than most world rated boxers in Australia. Former IBO world featherweight champion Jackson Asiku looked sensational in stopping Mexican Heriberto Ruiz in eight rounds but travelled to the USA and was defeated by former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez in six all action rounds in Las Vegas in September. Asiku was on the canvas in round four and five. Asiku still one of the best in the world and would be a good fight for Billy Dib He is stablemate of WBA featherweight champion Chris John and is trained and managed by Craig Christian. Leading Australian promoter is Bill Treacy who promoted the Daniel Geale vs Roman Karmazin and Lenny Zappavigna vs Ji Hoon -Kim IBF Elimination bouts in the biggest international promotion during 2010. Green Machine promotions televised Green vs Siaca, Green v Briggs and Green v Flores. Tony Mundine promoted the Mundine v Wood, Mundine v Waters and Mundine v Jerez. Other NSW promoters Angelo Hyder , Paul Nasari, Ryan Waters. Victorian promoters Brian Amatruda, Murray Thomson, Charlie Liparota, Peter Maniatis.
