edsel77x
First time seeing it, It was an amazing shot that knocked Clay down! What a robbery it was. Cooper would have clearly won the bout of it had not been for Dundee's crafty tactics. How many of you ol timers remember the bout? <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzQZReUi3m4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzQZReUi3m4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
londoner
Yeah, very controversial glove story. The actual KD wasn't controversial as he got up after just a few seconds but he was clearly dazed in the corner. The glove story sounds like the sort of thing i bet has happened many times in boxing but we just don't hear about it.
Wheelchair
A shame for Cooper that he didn't pull it off. Cuts were his downfall in both fights. Actually edsel, Cooper should inspire you to the 'top 10' thread you've yet to create. 'The Top Ten Bleeders' mlol/
brooklynbrawler
When Dundee tapped his legs, he instinctively got up too! :) Got straight back up from the KD too, even though he was totally out of it, just pure instinct. If the fight happened nowadays, the ref would have probably stopped it in the corner, but back then there was less chance of a stoppage. The glove sham allowed him to recover. Was a shame for Cooper in the end that he had so many problems with cuts...
McBride
I'm afraid this and the Joe Bugner fight have tarnished lovable " Old Enery's " reputation somewhat to us over 60's. 1. He says the heel of the glove is what caused the cut. Wrong!! 2. He claims Ali had over 2 minutes between rounds. Wrong!! The full version can be found on the internet, and it is mere extra seconds. 3. That fight was an eliminator for Liston's title, and the racist Jim Wicks was quoted as saying " I wouldn't let my Enery in the same parish as that big n****r, never mind the same ring." All in all it was a good payday for Henry, who was expected to do what he had done against every other American he had faced up until then,,,,,lose. The KD was the only surprise. donlevy
If only Clay had not received that one hours rest inbetween rounds 4 and 5.Without it,Cooper would have cracked that weak chin of Clays and gone on to become heavyweight champion of the world. telboy66
I was there that night all those years ago & yes it was a good shot that put Clay down but he got up opened up the cuts that were already troubling Henry & finished the job quick time. Had Henry decked Clay 30sec earlier history may have been different but there is no way Cooper would have fought Liston,as it was Henry made a very good living out of those few seconds that Clay spent on the deck, for me that fight enhanced Henry's rep not tarnishing it,I was also at the Bugner fight & had cooper winning a very close fight, in my book to take a mans title you have to leave no doubt & IMHO Bugner never did that, If this makes me seem ancient I am
donlevy
I don't think anyone in their right mind would believe Cooper would have fought Liston. His manager was open about Cooper wanting nothing to do with him.Liston would have killed Cooper. And to loosen the sarcasm a little from my earlier post,no,Cooper would not have clearly won had Dundee not spared his fight 5-10 seconds extra time(not the mythical two that Cooper claimed). The gloves were never changed, and Clay took care of business in the following round. This fight has spawned more myths than ancient greece.
McBride
I was at the 66 rematch Tel, and not like your good self at the 63 Wembley fight. When i said Henry's reputation was tarnished by this and the Bugner fight, i am referring to the way he has constantly griped about both fights over the years. He never mentions 66 when Ali virtually tore him a new one, and though I can see people think Bugner didn't do enough it was close either way. Harry Gibbs's cock up with the scoring caused more controversy than enough, which again Henry made a big deal out of to the point of not speaking to Gibbs for years afterwards. Yeah i was at that one as well, We all went hoping Henry could land that famous left hook but really knowing That Ali as he was by then was the finished article, Henry never looked like landing & Ali controlled from bell to the finish. It's great to talk boxing with someone that was at the same fights as me. Have a great Christmas mate
Dallen
I was at both Ali v Cooper fights also, over the years Our Henry has stretched the truth some what about the extra time Ali was allowed over the glove incident. In fact it was only 4 seconds longer, they did a re run on the BBC and timed it so to listen to Henry it was nearly two minutes for gods sake. McBride
Welcome to the old gits club Dallen. Yourself, Tel, and I, it seems are the over 60's mate. hehehe. As Tel says it is great to discuss boxing with guys who attended fights in the same era as us, and Merry Christmas and a Happy NY to both of you. After all we might not have too many left. mlol/ mlol/

Dallen
Mcbride,i think that sums us three up The Old Gits, but at least we saw most likely the greatest heavyweight ever live in action.
McBride
I think so mate, but i try to respect the opinions of both the older guys who told me that Joe Louis was the greatest, and the younger guys who would vote for Tyson.
