iamasadlittleboy
Earlier this week Katsunari Takayama spoke to the Japanese press about fighting unbeaten Filipino Merlito Sabillo in a unification bout. Takayama, the IBF champion at 105lbs, has previously held versions of both the WBC and WBA titles and appears to want Sabillo's WBO belt to become Japan's first fighter to collect the set. Although this seemed like a great fight on paper it was thought the WBO would step in the way and force Sabillo to fight Carlos Buitrago first. Sabillo and Buitrago, for those who don't know, fought to a very exciting draw last year and a rematch seemed imminent. Just a few days ago South African Hekkie Budler was promoted from interim champion to regular champion. It now appears that Buitrago's team in Nicaragua want a fight with Budler rather than a rematch with Sabillo. The possible bout, mooted for February 15th, would open the door to all-Asian unification bout whilst also pleasing the WBA who can keep their close links to Prodessa (Buitrago's promoter who also look after Gonzalez and, I think, Felix Alvarado).
