Haye career possibly over

Former world heavyweight champion David Haye has been advised to retire after major shoulder surgery.

The 33-year-old Briton had a five-hour reconstruction operation on his right shoulder in Germany on Thursday.

"The boxing gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough," said Haye, who has cancelled his 8 February bout with Tyson Fury.

"It's a crushing blow for me. This wasn't how I wanted to end 2013. Perhaps it just wasn't meant to be."

Haye announced his retirement in October 2011, three months after losing his WBA belt to Ukrainian Wladimir Klitscho in Germany, but he returned to the ring the following year.

"The surgery and subsequent results are a bitter pill to swallow because I truly felt I had a lot more to offer," Haye said.

"But I've been boxing for 23 years now, amateur and pro, and this has clearly taken its toll on my body.

"I genuinely believed the shoulder injury wasn't that bad. But the doctor sent me for a detailed MRI scan and within 24 hours I was told the full extent of the damage. Twenty-four hours after that I was in the operating theatre.

"I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title.

"What I didn't anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much.

Earlier in his career, Haye became European cruiserweight champion and went on to win the WBC, WBO and WBA world titles before stepping up to heavyweight.

He beat WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev in Germany in November 2009 to become the first Briton to hold a world heavyweight crown since Lennox Lewis.

Haye's most recent fight was a knockout win over Dereck Chisora at London's Upton Park in July 2012, one of only two fights he has had since 2010.

His scheduled June fight with German Manuel Charr was cancelled when Haye sustained a hand injury.

He was originally due to fight Fury in Manchester in September but the bout was rearranged for February after Haye suffered a cut above his left eye in training.

Fury's uncle and trainer, Peter Fury, said he was not surprised by the news that February's fight had been cancelled.

"From the moment Haye postponed in September, it was obvious this fight wasn't going to happen," he told BBC Sport.

"The public have been duped. Tyson will fight someone else in February. We'll get the show back on the road and we're glad we don't have to do business with these people ever again."

Haye added: "If I'm now destined to have won the European Championship, the unified world cruiserweight championship and the WBA heavyweight championship of the world - with a record of 28 fights, 26 wins, 24 victories coming via knockout and only two defeats - then so be it.

"I'm proud of these achievements and consider my boxing career a huge success."

Re: Haye career possibly over

Another training session, another injury. What's the betting Vitali suddenly makes up his mind to give Haye One Last Shot? Haye will of course, accept for the money, persuade people like brooklyn to back him again and then put in a dismal performance before apologising for the shoulder again.

I hope his injuries only affect his boxing career and that he lives a long and successful life, but frankly he's been bad for boxing and Vitali's not much better these days.

Fury is now looking to get Wilder in the ring.

I know many suspect Wilder may come unstuck when he moves up a level, but his power is always going to be a factor. I'd love to see these two in the ring knocking the shot out of each other.

--- You can forget Wilder at the top against a credible contender like Fury.

Gonna continue blasting out Ali Raymi canned opponents until Haymon and GBP can secure a decent payday for his denouement against the Ks. Then he can start a new streak blasting out kindergartners whoo-whooo!

Agreed, Fury v Wilder would be a good scrap.

I agree, but you know Team Wilder would never go for it. They think Fury isn't in their league despite his having shown himself against fighters that are light years ahead of anyone Wilder would ever be looking across the ring at. We know Fury has a suspect chin, but Wilder's porcelain will remain protected until a belt is on the line.

Re: Haye career possibly over

Gav, was it you that said that said that Haye pocketed a few hundred thousand from the cancelled Charr fight? If so, I wonder if the same thing has happened now again.

If I did, it was because I read it somewhere. More likely it was brooklyn or Scott. Brooklyn knows a lot about how much money Haye's got, as a lot of it used to belong to him.

LOL!!!! You got that right, how many times has he been burned by Haye's Sign and Disappoint routine, is it three fights or four? I don't know why anyone would book a flight and accommodations based on David Haye's word on anything. At this point, despite his skills when he actually does fight, he's simply a PR embarrassment and nothing more.

Re: Haye career possibly over

--- Geez, think of how much time, money and opportunities as Fury has to piss away just to sign to fight him. All for naught as too many in the heavy division could have told Fury in advance.

Very true, Fury has lost a career high payday and the inconvenience of one cancelled training camp. It is believed that Fury will still fight on February 8th - not sure, if at the same venue and whether he alone can fill it without Haye.

It happens in boxing. I think it was Wlad who cancelled twice on Chisora and never has given him a shot.

:mlol:

Thanks Gav...yes the cant has cost me a boatload of money...

At least I never bothered booking flights and hotels for the rescheduled fight, having told my mate that it was never going to go ahead in a million years and being spot on evidently.

But to make it worse, the company I bought the tickets through are declaring that they're going into liquidation...meaning that they're pocketing both the money I paid for the ticket AND the refund for the ticket from the promoter...great, just great...

The promoters (Haye co-promoted all of his own recent fights) pocketed in the region of £250k for the Charr fight, and in the region of £450k for the Fury fight in massively inflated "transaction fees".

With the 3 recently cancelled fights and one previously, Haye has personally cost our group over £2k for absolutely nothing.

He's cost me personally, over £1000 of that now, given I'm unlikely to see my money back for these tickets.

Never mind Klitschko, Fury or Wilder....I think I could knock the cant out myself now... :mlol:

I also agree with you Gav.

This isn't the last we'll see of Haye.

I'd bet the same amount of money he's cost me again, that he'll suddenly have a miracle recovery in time for a fight by next winter with Vitali or Wlad or to fight for some sort of title.

The guy has made an absolute mockery of boxing since moving to the Heavyweight division and while I do like my big British fights and away days, I'll be more than happy to see the back of him when he does eventually pack it in.

And before that, a mystery shoulder problem....and before that a small toe....and before that a fucking hand injury...

It's fine if it happens once or twice, but when it happens every other time you make a fight, then there's something well wrong and he should have just retired on his 30th like he promised to....and I'm sorry but it's a fucking liberty to keep a £20 "transaction fee" per ticket bought every time he pulls out of a fight...

The mockery wasn't his injuries - it was his entire heavyweight career.

Underwhelming opponent after underwhelming opponent, after all the talk when he first moved up.

And then the piss-poor performance against Wlad to top it off where he ran for the entire night when he wasn't on his knees....much the same as he did to win his belt against Valuev...
